  1. Ha, oddest purchase I've ever seen. How's it going? Did you buy the Robert Plant tickets?
  2. I'm curious, do you just not watch many movies or do you just normally watch odd movies?
  3. Last post but wanted to throw out a couple more. Corey Chisel is a local guy who is pretty big nationally now. I'm not a huge fan of most of his music, but he has started a local music festival that has brought all the acts I've posted to my area. I'm also sure some of these could be classified as more Alt-country or Folk Country or whatever, but eh, I'm terrible with labels.
  4. This is why I've stopped trying to label my ideology, if your entering into a conversation with someone and make it be known that your a ______ (insert whatever ism or ist you want) most of the time their eyes will just glaze over and it's pointless. However, removing labels and just having a honest and open conversation about your specific ideas and beliefs are much more likely to create an enviornment where both of you can grow.
  5. I've never tried the Rockstar stuff, just because of my pure hatred for Michael Savage. His kid is the one that owns it and while he may be a wonderful human, I just can't see the spawn of Savage being anything other than a terrible person.
  6. Once the word Feminism or any other ism word is said a large portion of people will just tune out. I just tire of the constant labeling of everything. Will my ideas sometimes line up with that of certain -ism's or other such labels? Sure, but I don't want to be defined by what people think Feminism is, or what people think atheist is, or what people think socialist is. I've stopped trying to label and classify myself because I am a collection of thoughts and ideas molded by my experiences. My ideas and beliefs are unique to me, just as everyone elses are unique to them. I don't want to stand up and shout I am a ______ist because I don't want to speak for everyone else who would have to classify themselves as the same. If you want to know what I am we can share thoughts and ideas but the whole thing of labeling everything just seems to create walls blocking out open and honest discussion.
  7. Just curious what was your degree in? All that matters is if your minimum needs are being met and your happy. Your job strikes me as one of those where the experience is actually part of the pay. There aren't to many jobs where you get to go and experience so much. I'd never be able to do what you do, but I do think getting to travel that much would be exciting. And because I'm curious are there a lot of long term Flight Attendents or is it mostly people doing it for a shorter time for the experience?
  8. I've always loved the Avail (old punk band from the 90's - early 00's) shirt that on the back had Poor Ugly Happy Money isn't something that I've ever put to much stock in. Before I do begin I understand that minimum needs do need to be met, and it's easy for me to say I don't value money when I make enough to keep myself full with a roof over my head and money to spend on luxuries. Basically the way I've always looked at money is that more that I make it's only going to lead me to "needing" and wanting more. So I'm a simple man with simple needs. I'll never drive a fancy new Lexus, but I'll always have a car to get me where I need to go. I'll never have a huge house, but I'll have one that keeps me warm in the winter and cool in summer. I'll never be going on exotic vacations but I'll always be able to go away for a weekend and have a good time. So yeah I'll always be poor and ugly, but I'll always be happy. I do use a broad definition of the words poor ugly happy. So I guess the only point I'm making is that I guess we are all in agreement. It's our expectations for our lives that determine what we define as having a decent job. I am a simple man with simple needs and me not having a college education isn't hindering me at all.
  9. Wasn't looking for someone to feel sorry for me. I won't lie I've always been a bit bitter about it, but it is what it is. Realistically if my parents were the type to try and push me I'd probably be a totally different person and I since I'm pretty fuckin' awesome I wouldn't want that change. I've actually taken classes at a Technical College while working. I was actually through all of the degree specific classes when I had to stop going. At the time the classes conflicted with my job and they were letting me move my schedule but then as one of my punishments for being mean they stopped doing that. A few years later when there were more online options and I wouldn't need to adjust my work schedule I tried going back but of the 48 credits I had only 12 of them were still valid. They made changes to the program I was in which invalidated everything I'd already done. I know I could have quit my job and finished the degree, but all I had left are the General Education classes and at my school those were the most frusterating things ever. The classes were dumbed down so much it infuriated me. I don't know what annoyed me more the Psychology class where we watched two episodes of everybody loves raymond and them spent 15 minutes talking about them every class, or the math class where we spent 1 week on how to use a standard ruler and one week on how to use a metric ruler. I just would get so pissed I was having to pay money to be taught things I learned in 7th - 10th grade. Right now I'm debating going for some Certificate courses in Management to open up some longer term options in my current profession, not sure I'd even want to do it, but I should start planning for more options long term.
  10. I wish I had this, my parent always told me I'd never be able to afford college. They did tell me that if I wanted to go to a Tech School I'd need to go out and get a job for a few years to be able to try and afford it. In school college was brought up once and a while. So were student loans, I just trusted my parents and thought I'd never be able to afford it.
  11. Yup, when I was 18 I was out of the house with no option of going back. I made the only decision I thought that I had at the time which was to get a job with upside in the manufacturing industry. Since I've started their I've doubled my salary. As importantly I've gotten enough experience in enough areas to make sure that I am a marketable asset if I need to find another job. As I stated earlier I know that if I do need to move jobs I will probably take a step or two backwards wage wise.
  12. I brought that up in my last post, I do understand it. I'm curious as to what sort of range you define "decent paying job" as. Especially since you earlier stated thata degree is almost necessary to get a decent paying job. I am not trying to gauge what wage range your in just what sort of pay range you define as decent.
  13. One of the other advantages to College Degrees that haven't been mentioned is that it is so much easier to change jobs and keep your wage or improve upon it. You have a piece of paper that is a marketable asset. I don't and I know that I means that I'll have a harder time moving from job to job. I know that if I changed my job right now I'd most likely need to be taking a 10-15% pay cut.
  14. Realistically, I think that more people just need to come up with a good plan on what they want to do for their lives. I know quite a few college graduates who are working jobs not related to their degrees and making very little money. An example is a friend with a Psychology Degree who is now working entry level jobs in unrelated fields because her degree is almost useless. It's all about actually taking time to try and come up with a realistic path for your career, degree or not.
  15. In regards to the comment about the only way to get a decent job is a college education I guess a big part of that is what do we want to define decent paying job as. College opens up a lot of doors and avenues but there are a lot of ways to make a fair / good living. I'm sure that I am making more than a lot college graduates out there, and I'm sure that I make a lot less than a lot of college graduates. I'll definitely agree that people with a college degree have a lot of doors opened to them that us non college degree holders have. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying people shouldn't be going to college, my biggest regret in life is not going to college out of high school. However if I would have went to college to be a teacher I wouldn't be in a better financial position as I am now. So yeah college is great, Technical Colleges are probably one of the best values for your money out there. However, you don't "need" a college degree for a decent paying job. (obviously depended on what your definition of decent is)
  16. Did you end up getting the house? I think last I knew you had an offer out.
  17. To be fair I've never heard anyone use the term "lady person" before. Perhaps if I would have had experiences with it being used in a derogetory way I'd rethink my usage of it. Your "cringing" at my comment is not an unexpected, I talk using awkward / cringe-worthy terminology frequently. It's actually a personal defense mechanism for my social anxiety, if I intentionally insert awkward / cringe-worthy terminology into conversation it makes my actual awkwardness seem not as pronounced. Basically embrace the awkwardness. I know that is a long response to a non-issue, but since you explained where you are coming from I wanted to do the same. If anyone was offended by my usage of the term lady person you can PM me your hate because we don't need more bumping of this thread.
  18. Ha, a co-worker has been asking me about hardcore shows lately because he's going to see 5 Finger Death Punch. He knew I was into hardcore the past and wanted to know what to expect. So fun thing is I got to get him all worked up and terrified. Told him about the Gordon Solie Mother Fuckers final show I was at in Cleveland (i think). That was the show where it ended with about 8 firetrucks showing up because there were so many fireworks lit off in a tiny bar. Smoke was just billowing out the windows it looked like the building was buring down. Or the Ultimate Warriors show that my brother went to where they did their backyard wrestling deal while doing their set. My brother actually had to remove barbed wire from one of their backs after their set. Or the Nine Shocks Terror show that turned into chaos with charcoal and a box of Free 7"s started getting thrown around. Or the Chicago Havok Fest that was at Chicago University of Psychology that was shut down after the alumni from the fundraiser upstairs saw that people were swinging from the chandaleir. That show they found another venue for but when we got there the Police had a paddy wagon waiting and anyone who went into the venue was getting arrested. Leaving there heading back to our car an older guy came out of his house asking us what was going on. He was telling us how he's lived there all his life and hasn't seen this many cops until a few "white boys with purple hair showed up". Apparently the venue was two blocks away from Cabrini Greens which is apparently a "bad" neighborhood in chicago. So no my coworker thinks that going to a Five Finger Death Punch show is going to be like these.
  19. Well, if my use of the term "lady person" means I am a misogynist, I guess thats me. Best of luck on your paper.
  20. Ha, I actually saw that. Tumor in the vocal chords. I know that isn't it. It's just simple laryngitis. The symptoms match up better but I do plan on going to the doctor if it isn't gone in a few weeks. It's much better now, but a few days ago it was crazy how bad it was. It felt like i was rubbing sandpaper on my vocal chords when I was talking. Plus it was so humorous how odd my voice was. My boss even had everyone come in and hear the voicemail I left when I called in last week because it was so hilarious. Now it's like I'm going through puberty and it just tickles when I talk.
  21. Got sent home from work for the second time in a week because I was to sick. I'm not really sick it's just laryngitis. I may be nearly unable to complete a full sentence but I feel fine.
