Better Now is at least fairly inoffensive, if it were that other new track I don’t know if the nostalgia for the old tracks would’ve been enough to make me pull the trigger.

    agreed.

also, they just added another variant (White w/ Black & Red Splatter) after the petal version sold out. I wonder how many variants they are going to keep tacking on.

  2. I finally spun my copies. They arrived without damage, and the records were flat and clean. I gave them a once-over with a brush before playing and didn't have any noise or pops.

Feels Like You sounded good (not stellar, but no complaints). I really wanted that one, so I'm happy it plays nicely. Distressor on the other hand, meh... No major problems like some of those described in the thread, but it just sounds blown out and mastered/pressed shitty. Not the worst sounding record, but the digital sounds better.

Yeah, there is definitely meaning behind their titles, if not solely in an "inside joke" kind of way.  One of the top Youtube comments for the new song is something akin to "the Mogwai Random Song Name Generator strikes again!" but I don't think that's ever been the case.

It's actually so good.  I think it's my favorite verse-chorus-verse-chorus song they've done, with vocals.  The way the verses are sung makes me think of CODY and I'm all about that.  Really hits me as a summation of their classic sound merged with the newer direction they've been taking.

Their song titles always have some kind of meaning, and it's usually an inside joke. The last regular album title was a joke: "Every Country's Sun" was making fun of someone they knew who actually thought that every country had their own sun...

The new song definitely feels like they are trying to at least give a wink to their early/classic sound while forging down the path they've been on for a few albums. I'm getting some serious "Teenage Exorcists" vibes from "Ritchie Sacramento."

I was totally Team $30WTF, but after hearing how good the two songs were, I seriously regretted not buying it.

Unless you got in on the first 30 seconds it was online, there is nothing to regret...

I was doing field work in South America and attempting to F5 like crazy on slow af dial-up speed internet and missed out. I'm still salty about this. It's a flipper's wet dream

It's just a bit weird because nobody has heard it yet.  It's a lot of stuff to sell on name recognition only.  Granted, they're very reliable but it's still a risk.  It's smart though if it pays off - you sell one thing to somebody 10 times, you're brilliant.

For Cult of Luna, it isn't a risk. After 20 years and about a dozen releases, they have a fan base, and they have been consistent enough with the quality of each release. It's not like this is a fledgling band. There is nothing weird about how this is being handled. The can sell these records without a problem.

Not every variant but I'm pretty confident they understand the collector thing that many people do.  Why else go bananas like this with all the options?

Regardless, it's a fuckload of product without hearing any of it yet.

Because options? If they know they can sell a bunch of records, why not make a bunch of records? Limiting a product below the market potential is just dumb. I'm getting sick and tired of having to sit at a computer and F5 a website because a band or label made way less of something that could sell to a larger audience. If they have to produce product in different parts of the world for different markets, then sure, do fun things with the colors and jackets.

All that said, and without rehashing the age-old variant collector debate, I don't blame them for capitalizing on this dumb trend. If I were in a band that moved this much product, I would totally troll variant collectors with a ton of options.
