  1. Hemmingway is amazing in the way that he can use short, simplistic statements that are filled with impact and depth. (For sale: baby shoes, never worn.) 'Sun Also Rises' is a hard one to jump into, you should look into some of his short story collections. 'Hills Like White Elephants' is a standard story taught in nearly every writing class I've ever taken, and for good reason- it's super stark, yet really intense.
  2. Just watched Justin Benson's (Resolution, VHS Viral) newest flick, "Spring," and it was one of the most original movies I have ever seen. I can barely post about it within the horror thread, but felt that it was just enough gore and scare factor for it to make the cut; similar to how "Let Me In" was a horror flick. I don't want to give too much away, but know that it is a love story overall. Shit it was great.
  3. picked up a couple of things as well, thanks for the heads up
  4. it really is just a matter of time before big labels begin to get their claws into trends the underdog, collecting, fan base veers toward to get away from said big label
  5. a year ago i would have been all over this, but i'm trying to be much more strict about what i purchase. if i don't listen to it on the regular, via my ipod now, then i cant justify the purchase
  6. I love Judge and the significance of this isn't lost on me, I just couldn't ever fathom spending more on a record than I did my last car.
  7. Just started "Animal Farm," as I snoozed on it during high school and opted to make out with girls and not give a shit about literature when I was an idiot teenager. Also, picked up a copy of "Dune," per everyone here's recommendation. Regarding "House of Leaves": I got about a quarter of the way in before giving up on it. It just seemed far more schtick than invested literature to me. Maybe I should give it another shot, but I just couldn't buy into the hype then.
  8. Exactly! Buy his tapes. I have always enjoyed cassettes, as they were the first medium of physical music that I could go about on my own, making my own purchases to start my first collection. I regret parting ways with all my old 90s alt-rock and radio punk tapes when I thought that CDs would be the "do all-say all" in music. I collect tapes today because, like Rambo said, tapes are the affordable option (for both the label and the consumer) when it comes to physical media; exactly how vinyl was years ago. Speaking of cassettes, I do believe I have a cassette coming out on Rambo's label here very soon. What a coincidence!
  9. The lady is catching me up on flicks I may have missed throughout the last decade. They consist mostly of emotional flicks that I definitely should have caught, though I have enjoyed them thus far. The two stand out flicks include - The Guardian- I regret making fun of Ashton Kutcher, as he gives a phenomenal performance in this - Remember the Titans- Everything Denzel does is gold. I'm not ashamed to say there were many points in which I had to find a "cool" way to wipe the "sleep" from my "dry contact," which is why I "looked" like I was crying...though I totally wasn't
  10. I absolutely love McCarthy's ability to paint a picture that comes across as both gorgeous and abysmal at the same time. Anytime somebody asks what kind of fiction I write, I always tell them to think of McCarthy and rural America.
  11. So far, it's been a pretty solid record for me, though I do miss the use of "oooohs and aaaaahs" in the background vocals, instead of just all of them harmonizing. I'm thinking this is going to grow on me more and more.
  12. I would highly recommend giving it a read. It reads as a road map through early American culture, race, music and art. Seriously, though I agree that it is dated, it is highly worth the read.
  13. After working at a book store for a few years, I've collected enough books to fill a small hallway; so every time I go looking for a new book, I'm immediately overwhelmed by everything I want to read. Just started Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian"
  14. Watched The Canal (via Netflix) and would definitely give it a solid B/B+ for legitimate creep outs and a pretty legitimate cast. Only downside was a predictable ending, though I still highly recommend a viewing.
  15. I, somewhat, understand why someone might be okay with these novels. Just like how I, without shame, have enjoyed reading the works of Tucker Max. Maybe Bukowski was the OG Tucker Max. Again, Bukowski has written some of the most amazing poems that I've ever read, but maybe I'm just missing any sort of literary significance in his novels/prose.
  16. Though I've always been a huge fan of Bukowski's poetry, I started "Post Office" today, and it took a lot of willpower to not toss it into a trash can after hopping off the train. About halfway through (I didn't have another book on me) and the guy just seems like a sexist, pretentious, entitled ass. Again, his poetry is powerful and incredibly and intelligently structured; but this novel/prose is borderline garbage. I'm certain I'll be torn apart for this post.
  17. Wasn't super into it, but I'm hoping the rest of the album delivers
  18. Have you read Severed? It's by Scott Snyder (wytches) and is his best work, in my opinion, and legitimately creepy.
  19. Now that I'm commuting a little over an hour each way, to and from work, I've been ripping through books. This last week I read Brian Keene's "The Rising," which was an awful attempt at a zombie novel that I only finished because I had to see it through. Along with "The Rising," I just finished "To Kill a Mockingbird" today. Though I read it in high school, there was no way I could have appreciated the Harper Lee's genius until now. Tomorrow I'm either going to start "The Tenth Man," or something by Sedaris.
  20. It's a bit outside of your budget, but the Springsteen box set would be a killer gift idea. Here
