  1. There's nothing like a nice plate of steamed pork gyoza after a break-free 3-11pm shift to calm you down. And to stop making you feel dizzy since you hadn't eaten at all since 2pm. Thank god I have tomorrow off.
  2. I'm Adam. I live in Athens, GA. Shockingly enough, not that big of a Bulldogs fan despite being an alum. Currently, I work as a scooper-slash-event planner at Ben & Jerry's (unfortunately, there's no convenient way to mail ice cream, or else I'd totally do it). When I'm not job hunting for an actual career job or scraping by on an hourly wage, I enjoy photography, graphic design, architecture and interior design, drumming, thrifting, playing Animal Crossing, night driving, taking the train/walking around Atlanta, and eating delicious food from other countries, especially sushi and curry. I'm also obsessed with Haribo Twin Cherries gummy candy, have a disturbing number of floral print button-down shirts, and collect mugs from the 80s and 90s. Oh, and I have a 20-something-white-girl-with-a-Pinterest-level obsession with New York City, and plan to move there someday, so take that for what it's worth. Movie-wise, I'm mostly into comedies, animated stuff, and anything generally light-hearted. Or anything that'll scare the shit out of me. Not crazy about action or superhero movies, but I'll watch them if it's free. TV series I like include The Office, Parks and Rec, Always Sunny, Portlandia, Futurama, American Dad (not Family Guy), BoJack Horseman, House Hunters, Iron Chef, Chopped, and a few anime series. My taste in music is wildly diverse, but I'm primarily interested in electronic music, chillwave, garage/surf punk, and post-hardcore. Some of my favorite musicians/bands at the moment are Dance Gavin Dance, Touché Amoré, Machinedrum, Kishi Bashi, Toro y Moi, Beyoncé, Washed Out, Tame Impala, Neon Indian, How To Dress Well, and basically any artist on this cool techno label called Ultramajic. If you need more info, my tradelist/Tumblr/Instagram is in my signature. I'm also gonna try to get a wantlist started on my DF just in case you're not sure what to get or need a bit of help. Super psyched to start the stuff-purchasing process!
  3. By itself, it didn't really taste like anything (surprise surprise); just wiggly, slightly crunchy jello. It honestly sort of reminded me of seaweed salad, especially texture-wise. I'm very thankful they included some good spicy sauce with it. Made it much more enjoyable.
  4. Ah, yes. Back on the job hunt. My goal is to apply to at least fifty jobs each week, even if it's something I don't really have an interest in doing. Honestly, at this point, I just want salaried pay with decent benefits and a consistent schedule. Writing cover letters still sucks, though. (also: something about anime...?)
  5. Wow, it literally is just a Debut III with more words on it. I'm looking at mine as a comparison point and...well, yeah. Practically identical. You can even still buy the Debut III from Music Direct for $300, just like I did two years ago. Although I'm admittedly a sucker for faux wood finish. (still wouldn't buy this tho)
  6. Honestly, I'm still amazed that some schools start back up in September. In grade school AND college, most of my school years started during the second week of August. I guess the schools that start in September are also the schools whose summer breaks don't start until June, so it's really more of a moot point.
  7. Love love love stand-up. Been listening to it for most of my life, even if my first few stand-up albums were all Christian comedians from the late 90's and early 2000's that my dad liked. My current faves are probably Maria Bamford (probably my all-time fave), Jen Kirkman, Eugene Mirman, Kumail Nanjiani, John Mulaney, Hannibal Buress, Tig Notaro, and Nick Thune. I've also been working on a stand-up set on and off for a few months now, putting some final touches on it before I get on stage for the first time. A few friends of mine host comedy nights around town a couple times a week, and after having been to most of them, the cool supportive crowds have me feeling not as nervous as if I were starting out somewhere in Atlanta. Not sure why, I just feel like they're much more critical of new comedians there.
  8. Bumping an old thread for some opinions. This is probably a ridiculous question, but I figure this would be a good place to ask around for advice on getting started. So, I've always been into graphic design, but my experience with Photoshop is limited and my experience with Illustrator, InDesign, etc. is nonexistent. I want to learn how to use these programs and eventually get good enough to start doing freelance work. The only way I figure I'd be able to learn how to use them is to subscribe to Adobe CC so that I can have hands-on practice, but $50 a month is pretty steep for someone making $800 a month on average. I guess my question is: should I bite the bullet, even though I'm a literal beginner and don't have that much cash on hand? Or would it be smarter for me to just start with one app like Illustrator for $20 a month so that it's not quite as painful on my bank account, then build my way up to CC or something similar as I get better at it? If not Adobe, are there any alternatives that I just don't know about?
  9. 10. Don't worry, the first day is almost always just going over the syllabus, mayyybe 10 or 15 minutes of lecture if the professor is an asshole. Just figure out where your classes are located on campus, make sure you have everything you think you'll need before you leave, give yourself enough time to get there and get settled before class starts, maybe get a drink or a snack or something, and you're set. I assume that most colleges have something like a drop-add week for students to get their schedule set for the rest of the term, so it's perfectly normal to show up a bit late, not have all of the required materials yet, drop a class you might not be into, pick up a fun elective, etc. Also, don't be afraid to introduce yourself to people. I honestly think one of the things I heard at least once a week for four and a half years was "nice to meet you." Hell, I still hear it because I work across the street from my school's entrance. Good friendships and better connections can be made if you just say hi. Also also, never underestimate the power of tutors (even if you have to pay them) and study groups. They saved my ass on a good number of occasions.
  11. Personally, I only get steak rare or medium rare, sometimes medium depending on the cut and if I know the person cooking knows what they're doing. Also, have any of y'all ever tried any kind of beef or fish tataki-style? Salt and pepper the meat, sear on high heat for a minute or less on each side, mix up a citrus marinade, then slice the meat thin and pour the marinade on top. Goddamn delicious.
  12. Getting back into the groove of applying to jobs is pretty intimidating, especially since it's been about a month since I've applied for anything related to the industry I wanna work in.
  13. These past few days have been very kind to me, thanks to $89 of Amazon credit I forgot I had. Beyonce - S/T Dan Bodan - Soft High Lucia - Wash EP Wunder Wunder - Coastline 7" Passion Pit - Kindred (got this from UO, not Amazon)
  14. Man, I had no intention of downloading that Urban On app, but the new Passion Pit album for $10 shipped was too good to resist. Also, a new UO is opening right down the street from where I work. Whether or not their vinyl section will be any kind of decent is up for debate, since it's a relatively small town BUT they're literally three doors down from Wuxtry Records, which is consistently in Top 10 Record Stores lists. We'll just have to see once they're open for business.
  15. I can't say I'd be surprised if this whole thing was just a liquidation, but I'm actually totally okay with that. More good music at like half the price for me. Also, I've somehow managed to have zero issues every time I bought something from them, even the two albums I ordered during this whole "closing our doors" sale. Don't know how, given the last few posts.
  16. Ooooh, I might try to catch their show at The Earl. Also, I don't normally pre-order an album until after I've heard a song or two, but I might have to break that rule for this one.
  17. Got a copy of Dum Dum Girls - Too True for $5 at one of the UOs in Atlanta last week. Hella.
  18. Seriously considering selling basically everything I have and moving to NYC. Maybe then I'd actually get some responses to my job applications, since most of these assholes apparently don't bother with out-of-state applicants.
  19. Bought Gaussian Curve - Clouds from the Insound going-out-of-business sale, and found a CD copy of La Dispute - Vancouver for $2.50 at my local Goodwill. Two great purchases, one okay day.
  20. The only records I ever see in the Goodwills in my area are dinky old gospel records and Xmas albums. I did find a CD copy of La Dispute - Vancouver today, though. Pretty cool find, even though it's just the CD.
  21. Ordered Lone - Reality Testing for $11 a few minutes ago, honestly surprised it was still in stock. I still want to order a few things, mainly Rustie - Green Language, Future Brown's s/t album, Gaussian Curve - Clouds, and possibly that Mr. Oizo album a few of y'all mentioned, but I'll have to wait until I get paid on Friday. Here's hoping all of those are still in stock by then.
  22. Just ordered Lone - Reality Testing from Insound, since their "we're closing, 50% off everything we have" sale is still going on. Ended up paying $17 total, not too shabby considering it normally goes for $25-30 plus tax/shipping everywhere else.
  23. I only ever ate ramen during college when I felt like it, not because it was all I had. #bourgeoisie
