They always use them when the other person isnt expecting the last line to be a joke. Usually when the one getting burned is stressed or busy. The ones I heard today were: "When are you gonna come pick up that shit?" "What shit?" "The shit you left on the tip of my dick." and, "Are you gonna move that box?" "What box?" I think the key is to actually be nice and friendly most of the time so they know you're not serious when you joke with them.
