AlexH.
The Mae Shi - HLLLYH cassette, or III & IIII CD-Rs. Both tour-only releases, and the one time they've been here since it was released the show was 21+. I've messaged the band on myspace, and searched the internet over, to no avail. III & IIII haven't even shown up on torrent trackers.

mxv
Necros - Sex Drive The Fix - Vengeance Sadly if these ever do appear on a place like ebay, I'll never be able to afford them. I've wanted these two 7"s for longer than a lot of people on this board have probably been alive. I fear that I will die before ever owning them! hickey
Screecing Weasel - Pervo Devo 7" on Out Punk Records. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I do not think this record actually exists. I have never seen it and have never come across anyone who owns a copy. Ben wrote about it in the liner notes to one of the LPs. The copies on Shred of Dignity are pretty easy to come by, but the Out Punk pressing is my white whale. Also, I don't really think test presses should count as white whales...they're just nice to have.

mclz
there's one up on eBay right now. not sure how much you're willing to pay for it... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=120343479286&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=002 This is what always spurs the, "That's not a white whale" debate. For me it's always been something that is not only hard to find but that doesn't really have a monetary number attached to it because it isn't regularly sold. That Smashing Pumpkins one is un-fucking-believable and I can't imagine that popping up on ebay. So, to me, that makes it some amazing white whale record. If it's on ebay every other week I just don't think it qualifies. But hey, that's just me. agreed

It's gotta be rare enough that you don't see it all the time.
xxmartinxx
The records that fall into the "commonly available but out of my price range" should be called a "Gold Whale" rather than a "White Whale", in my opinion.

captainmorgan
I propose Giant Squid - not quite as rare as a white whale, but only occasionally washes up on the beach.
skanknsmile
I think a white whale is something that you've seen, know exists, may have slipped through your fingers, but you still can't get ahold of. That's how Murder City Devil's Empty Bottles Broken Hearts was for me, but I had a great GF who got it for me. That said: Lucero-Tennessee and That Much Further West. Duff
most of my white whales are out of reach financially, its not that i've rarely seen one up for sale. in terms of that i would have to say it would be new found glory - dressed to kill 7" because i've never even seen pictures of it, its existence is still somewhat questionable because of that fact. if it deos exist that one record would keep me from completing my nfg collection. bruins4ever
Thrice - Illusion of Safety on gold. One was up on Ebay last week, but I certainly can't afford something like that around the holidays. I'll get it eventually. I've also wanted to find the Patton Oswalt/Melvins split, which exists according to Deadformat, but I've never seen one.

thrillho
I had my chances, but ETID - The Big Dirty test press is my big one and the next down the list is Gutter Phenomenon's test. And while we're at it, the Hex Comp numbered and another with the red stamp, although I just haven't looked hard enough for the stamped one. The HEX numbered and the Hot Damn test are my two
