Fest 8

Not sure what you're talking about, you mean the part where it was just Nick and Jon?

Yeah, it just seemed kinda self-indulgent to me.

I don't really recall too much about the song...being drunk does that. I've seen a lot of bands do songs with one or two members while other members pack up, so I didn't put too much thought into it.

I never knew so many people had a problem is Common Grounds. I go there for shows all the time and never have problems. I know one of the door guys, James, and he's one of the nicest dudes I've ever talked to, and I volunteered there saturday and Jason Rockhill was my stage manager and he was nothing but pleasant to me and the other volunteer. It seems like everyone just holds it against them that there's always a huge line, which they can't help, and that they're not really prone to deal with any bullshit because unlike most of the fest venues that are almost totally volunteer run, the Common Grounds people have to deal with this shit every day. I'm sure anything you think you saw with someone getting to cut the line because they were buddies with the door guy has another explanation. During my volunteer shift my main job was just guarding the load out gate out back, and I wasn't even allowed to let the bands escort in friends through that entrance even if they had fest bands.

I will agree that it gets hot as fuck in there and their A/C breaks all the time, so they need to figure out some way to ventilate that place.

I also don't really understand the logic with the show they had at UF. The Minus the Bear and acoustic hipster folk shows last year made sense, but this one didn't. People who go here have the fucking worst taste in music on the planet, and about as punk/indie as any music taste gets here is the stuff they play on MTVU.

Oh well. I try not to fault the Fest folks too much for long lines or bad scheduling or anything like that. They seem to be doing it for the right reasons and they're all nice and dandy. It's not like anyone's making a million bucks off of it.

wow...pretty good guestimates on my part if that's the case - i figured around 5000 total. the crusties were ridiculous. its just like they would lay around in that one block all day long then all of a sudden appear drunk asking for money at night.

common grounds was awful. i was in there twice and it was never anywhere near what i would guess was capacity. as a venue though, i really liked it.

that was my first fest and i gotta say - i'm absolutely in love with it. sure the band list didn't seem as good as last year but i realy had the time of my life. saw lots of great bands, met some awesome people, and just had a great time with my boys. its kind of a nice feeling to see the epitome of our scene in action.

The thing about this is that people outside on the porch were counted as part of the capacity. So even though the inside might not have been very full, a lot of people came early and just hung outside so they wouldn't miss any bands later.

I'm with Ryan - I was unaware of the Common Grounds hating.

Suppose you could say I am a regular there. I know most of the staff there and in the past 5 years that I have been attending shows there, I've never had a problem there. I suppose it's different during The Fest. Actually, I did not set foot inside there this year, since every time I tried to get in, the line was past Five Star.

As far as the show at the Rion Ballroom, yes, it was far away from everything else. I actually overheard Jonathan from The Swellers talking about how he did not even know where the place was and I gave him some very simple, yet concise directions. I ran into him again late Saturday night at Market Street and he thanked me for those directions saying he texted/tweeted them to everyone he know so they could find it. The Swellers even used their van as a shuttle - picked people up at Mother's Pub and gave them rides to campus.

kyle you were the corn at shark pants?!?!?!? SHIT that costume was epic. had corn hairs and everything.

haha yeah that was me. The corn hairs were really cool except they kept getting in my face. I hope I didn't get too out of control during Shark Pants, I was totally euphoric at that point and just fucking ruling. What a great night.

i never heard of shark pants until that night when i looked at the list. the name alone made me go a few bands early before panthro went on. The crowd going apeshit was awesome. tons of high fives and "HOLY SHIT IT'S SHARK PANTS" phrases.

Is there a girl from this board who saw me? I was drunkenly walking to the Kickstand on Sunday when some girl walked by with two dudes and shouted at me. I think she said she was from the VC Board. I nodded and walked on.

I'm smoooooooooth

I squeezed between you and Scott to get into the convenient store that night. But I'm not a girl.

PS - dante... Morgan ended up with your beers because you left without them. he's 17. way to contribute to the deliquency of minors ;)

Haha, I realized about halfway back that I left them there. However, realizing that the one can of Four Loko that I had was about 4 beers, I felt it was okay to leave the two tallboys behind. Glad I could help someone achieve their dreams.

Fuck me, this thread exploded while i was away, can't be arsed with reading it all now. Just wanted to pop by and say how awesome it was to meet all the VC guys you know who you are, just a shame i didn't get chance to hang at more shows than i did.

Also wanted to apologise to Aussie Andy, we introduced, but then in a bag check wedding dress fiasco at CG, lost him and never got to chat... sorry if i came across rude buddy, i'll make it up next year dude!

now, for a list of musical highlights.

1. Iron Chic - Best Band i saw all weekend.

2. Dear Landlord - incredible set, set the standard real high for CG for the rest of the day.

3. Apologies, I have none. - Loved it.

4. Tim Barry - When he sang Ronnies Song, i was almost in tears.

5. Both Bangers and Calvinball Sets, easily the funnest shows i been to in ages, let alone the fest. Filled my heart with some kind of British pride, can't even begin to explain how heart achingly ball popping good it was. Anyone who missed it missed out.

Yes, i know him buddy. He is from this side of the pond. He is fine, he just got a couple of broken toes.

I have heard so many rumors about it like the vans were moving and that he broke his neck/back or died. None of it is true.

The worst bit of it all was that he spent the Fest Sober. :(

I think that hurts more than all the rumored injuries.

I can't believe that's all that happened to him. I was across the parking lot and heard the thud of this dude hitting the ground. It happened in slow motion complete with a "NOOOOOOO!!!" in my head. Really glad to hear that dude is alright.

Well, i'm sure he probably has a sore head, and some bumps and bruises but the broken toes were the worst injuries. He did make it to the fest, he was at the warehouse show on Friday night and i spoke to him again at some point on the Sunday night. think he was just bummed out with not drinking and having to use crutches.
