roadmonkey
most of these bands aren't ska bands Can you please elaborate? I'm know that ska came from influences from Jamaica and has taken some turns in it's life span The thing is that this weekend he's going to one of his friend's kid's shows and he wants to have some more exposure to ska in general. Judging that most of the ska bands from the Northern California region worship op ivy, I figure it may be chock full of punk/ska. Thank you all for the suggestions. Please keep them coming. I'm just looking for a full 70 Min CD worth of hits I'll post the final tracklisting when I'm done and if anyone wants a copy I'll send it over
burdenx
Based on the list of bands you gave, it looked like you were looking more for ska-punk bands which is more of a sub-genre of punk. If you just say you want ska bands, people are going to assume you want first wave stuff. People are just quibbling about the semantics of the word, which they always do. The list I initially gave is essentially bands that I found are commonly filed under ska. Thanks for clearing up. I honestly don't care about semantics, just good music

goraiders
not that this is worth getting into, but all genres change. For some reason people insist on saying ska isn't ska unless its first wave or maybe even two tone. Right now this stuff people are reccomending is ska. ricky
I'm a ska dork, don't really like third wave, but tolerate a few bands. This podcast is fucking ace for more traditional kinda stuff: http://pressuredrop.podomatic.com/ Also, if you can track down a copy of an album called "Ska Island" I think that's a really good representation of the more traditional side of ska. It's got a bunch of OG ska folks (Prince Buster, Skatalites, etc.) covering other OG ska folks and a bunch of American ska bands of the '90s (Toasters, Hepcat, Fishbone) and international ska bands covering old ska tunes. It's kinda hard to find if memory serves, though.
antoine
Here's a quick list I made in my iTunes.. 20 ska songs that fits on a cd (Important!!!! Don't forget to put the Madness song FIRST!). When I think of ska, I don't really think of Less Than jake, Slapstick or Catch-22, so my list sounds more like 1st wave... I hope you'll like it! tommytumult
You must find some Prince Buster. It's tough, but anything you can find will probably be awesome. You can't fail with The Specials and The English Beat. For some obscure third wave, try to find Janitors Against Apartheid.
tommytumult
Buck o Nine's "my town" is flawless. Also, this. 28 Teeth is my favorite album to come out of the third wave. Such an amazing, happy summer album.
