kieran
Im going to be in the states from August to September to undertake some Geography fieldwork for my degree (I know long way off but about to book my flights so getting pretty excited.) I will have the opportunity to travel though before and after so was looking for some more unusual things to do. Im spending time in San Francisco before heading to Seattle for a few days before starting work so any advice would be much appreciated. Also good record shops? steventangent
Here in a Merica, we're all a bunch of illiterate, classless, gun toting, rude cowboy assholes. This is why the rest of the world hates us. You've been warned.

oakland
Avoid these places: south-east Washington, D.C. east St. Louis Batton Rouge, LA any place that has the name "ward" in it if you are in Dallas (ie. "The Fifth Ward") Miami, except the beach South Central Los Angeles West or North Philly. Some of South Philly too. Just be careful in Philly is what I'm saying. Rural Virginia or any rural part of the south. Gary, Indiana and Chicago's south side Most of Detroit There's lot of other bad places of course but those are notorious. flood
if you're staying on the west coast i've heard from my sister that the Wine tours are great. go see a show at the gorge ampitheatre (outside of seattle) arguably the best outdoor venue in the country.... its literally inside a huge canyon.. and its beautiful. mcm1610
Maybe it's my interest in Europe over US, but when I think of places I want to visit, nothing in the US ever pops up. I've never gone more south than Cape Hatteras, NC, and I've never been further west than Detroit, but I have no desire to go elsewhere.
