goraiders
I know there are a lot of you here! I'm graduating from college in June and am almost definitely going to move to one of these two places. I'm applying for jobs and looking at housing now. I'm looking for advice/ job opportunities/ general info about living there. I have friends I'd live with in both places, would i be able to get by with a 10 dollar an hour full time job? Help me!
smailtronic
I'd guess that Houston would be far more affordable.
silentgods
You are more likely to get by in Houston with a ten dollar an hour job. Houston is awesome, for the most part.
goraiders
I have a friend in Boston who would live with me and his rich girlfriend who would kind of subsidize us living, and while we'd be technically sharing a room I figure he'd spend most of the time with her. AKA perfect for me because I'd only end up paying 350 or so for rent. Anyone have any experience with Americorp? I'm looking into that too
MattyIceyo
My GF works for an offshoot of Americorp. I live in Boston. It can be pricey in the city, but you can look in other places (quincy, east boston, cambridge) that are Subway accessable to the city. PM me man I have been living in Boston for years I can answer anything you wanna know.
kirbs84
I like Houston. I'm sure I'd like Boston too, but I've never been there. That's all I have to offer this thread.
ericheartsu
Boston i feel has a better punk rock music scene. However, it's really cheap to live here, but you have to have a car, cause it's so big.
ericheartsu
also, for $550 a month you can rent a house in houston. not a room.
goraiders
also, for $550 a month you can rent a house in houston. not a room. thats so ridiculous compared to california... do people in houston like houston? Is it city city like SF or Ny or more spread out like LA?
ericheartsu
Its spread out like LA. and there really isn't a good mass public transport like NYC or Chicago
nickj
boston is awesome, but living on $10/hour will suck. even if you dont have much rent to pay, money goes quick on just about everything else (transportation, food, beer, etc)
goraiders
What areas in Houston would i want to live/ not want to live? I'm thinking that it is moving ahead.
controlthebleeding
i still don't know why anyone would move to houston over boston. boston rules! but again, you can't beat houston on pricing. then again it's houston.

adammuzzy
boston! i know plenty of people who get by there on close to $10/hr. so what does $10/hr bring you home a month with a full time job, somewhere around $1000-1100?, sounds like you have at least 650 a month extra after rent... cj
so wait... you're graduating from college and are going to make 10/hour? seems like a waste of money for college doesnt it? id think you could get a better paying job with a degree/diploma/certificate

mygreatdevastator
You could live in Allston, Brighton, Watertown, hell even places in Cambridge can get that cheap. You can even find an interim job at a place like WholeFoods for $10, I have a lot of friends that work there.
goraiders
Yeah I mean the goal is to get a real job, but the ten dollar/ hour would be theoretically until I get that job.
scotterson
Just curious: why are you limiting yourself to those two cities? If you are just graduating, and don't have ties to any one place, why don't you apply all over the country and find somewhere that sounds interesting/fun AND can offer a good job? Also, I've never been to either of these places, so can't offer anything constructive, sorry. Like I said, just curious.

So they seemed like logical starting points.
ericheartsu
i'd try and move closer into Houston. Stay away from greenspoint. The woodlands, Sugarland, Katy, are all really nice, but all Total suburbs. I'm try and live in the Heights, Bellaire, Westchase (even though it might be a bit to far from the actual city)
opivy
Boston is pretty great, I'm finishing college there. Good music, public transportation, and if you're willing to live outside of the city in a place like allston or brighton with friends you could probably afford it. mcm1610
Boston is definitely a lot of fun but it's quite expensive. You can find livable places, though. My best friend's buddy lives in Cambridge a few blocks away from MIT and it's not cripplingly expensive. The public transit and/or a bike will let you save quite a bit of money, though.
