IM Clients

Recommended Posts

Odd question, but I just switched my IM client recently and I was curious what other people use? Or maybe someone will learn about a new program here.

I've been using the same version of AIM with the Dead AIM plugin on top of it for yeaaaaars. I refused to upgrade to any newer version of AIM because of how much garbage they tacked on.

Even though I rarely use instant messaging these days I decided to try something different.

First I tried Pidgin, because it's open source and I always try to support OS first. However, I wasn't really into Pidgin, it felt very limited. I'm sure as time gets by it will get better.

I used Trillian a bit a few years back, but I also though it was pretty bloated and meh. A lot of people really like it though.

On my Mac I use Adium, which is by far the best IM program I have ever used. It takes iChat and spanks it.

Meebo is nice on the fly.

I finally found my match on Sunday evening though.

Digsby!

I'm hooked on this one. It's still in beta, so it's not perfect. It's similar to Adium, but not quite there yet. My favorite feature is the ability to add all of my e-mail addresses along with Myspace and Facebook to notify me when I get new messages or whatever. Plus that little Digsby icon is pretty damn sweet.

I've been a huge Pidgin user for a while. It's great and extremely light weight but I've recently changed over to Digsby. It's "prettier" than Pidgin, more customizable and has social networks built in. I recommend either of the two to anyone.

I use Trillian. Why do you guys think it's clunky? I'm using Minimal 3.0 on it, it's slim and simple.

I was mostly referring to the other two with the clunky thing... I like Trillian a lot too. Wish it had native Google Talk. And it handles tabs kinda screwy sometimes.

Ahh ok. Yeah, I'm a big supporter of minimalist-style programs that save on resources and screen space. I've recently switched to these and customized them to be as basic (yet practical) as possible:

Browser: Firefox

E-Mail: Thunderbird

IM: Trillian

Music: Foobar

WinZip / WinRar: ExtractNow

Nice. I use Firefox, Gmail, Trillian/Google Talk, iTunes (meh... I'll check out Foobar), and 7-zip, respectively.

I'm a Firefox user, but if you're looking for a minimalist browser you're using the wrong one. Firefox 2 is a resource hog.

If you're not dependent on extensions like I am, then I suggest you use the Firefox 3 beta as they fixed a lot of the memory leak issues.

Alternatively, Opera is "quicker" in the resources department.

...and I don't really think Winrar is that robust...

I use extensions too. Does Firefox 3 Beta not allow extensions? What extensions do you use (I'm always up for checking out new ones)?

Some extensions work for the beta, but not all are functional yet.

I use:

- Ad Block Plus

- Filterset.g updater (for AdBlock)

- No Script

- Greasemonkey

- Mouse Gestures

...and some other things I'm probably forgetting. I try to keep it limited, as badly coded extensions are a huge reason that Firefox 2 is a memory hog.
