shamrocks
i find myself making way too many impulse buys recently. how do you guys feed your addiction while subsequently remaining responsible adults.
ryanmccauley38
I certainly have no control and constantly find myself buying fast food and making it last me days on end to compensate for my reckless regard toward money. Whatever. Fuck being responsible. That sounds boring and unsatisfying.

BuzzersonKillwell
I have a bank account specifically for myself with a certain bit of cash automatically added there each paycheck. It essentially functions solely as a beer and record account. When it is empty, I don't buy anything.
almightyseancore
true...but are you married with three kids? i am! exactly that infact, and i'm horrible with money. my wife is the responsible one, who works her ass off and supports all of us. i'm the fuck up who rarely has a job, and when i do i blow most of the money on records and video games. she understands though, and i make up for it by being a pretty great dad/husband in return. i'm just one of those lucky guys who is loved for who he is i guess. shamrocks
so i mean im the sole provider, and my family is taken care of, we dont scrape by, so am I wrong to spend 100-200 a week on records? It FEELS wrong, but also oh so right... i thought about filling my paypal balance with a set amount and just using that but of course i woudl bypass that by just going to the record store

ryanmccauley38
true...but are you married with three kids? Nope. Until then, there's plenty of time for me to carry on with my reckless streak. And even if I were: true...but are you married with three kids? i am! exactly that infact, and i'm horrible with money. my wife is the responsible one, who works her ass off and supports all of us. i'm the fuck up who rarely has a job, and when i do i blow most of the money on records and video games. she understands though, and i make up for it by being a pretty great dad/husband in return. i'm just one of those lucky guys who is loved for who he is i guess. I could only aspire to be like you. Save for being considered a fuck up. Except that's probably what I'll end up being anyways. So maybe including being a fuck up. Hooray! But you have a good taste in music. That's not fucked up. Fuck yeah. Fuckfuckfuck.

Do you ever turn your stuff around to offset your spending? I know I have to do that more than I'd like to, both for financial reasons, and because I don't have the spacial capacity yet to keep expanding. But if it helps my irresponsible ass, I'm sure a regular cleansing of your collection will help out for you as well. Or you could do the whole, buy a collection, keep what you want, move the rest, thing. Unless you're against that sort of thing. Or you could become a drug kingpin! OR A HITMAN! Or you could get your wife to pay you to babysit! You've already got the kids! It's like you're halfway there! Albeit your allowance idea is probably the best yet. shamrocks
i should probably get rid of about 10-20% of my records, but since I dont have to, I havent felt the need. Im actually starting to get into rarer stuff, so that limits it a little bit, I used to buy 4-5 new releases every tuesday - not doing that any more. Im actually starting to get into rarer stuff, so that limits it a little bit, I used to buy 4-5 new releases every tuesday - not doing that any more. This is a problem I know is coming up. With every cleansing comes a wave a new stuff, and with every wave comes a few that I just refuse to let go of. I can't keep perpetuating the cycle like that with the limited space allotted for my records. I need to get some serious shelving. But if you know you've got stuff to pass on, I say do it. Might as well enjoy that cycle for while you can right?
somethingvinyl
I enjoy two things: gambling and records. It's tough to combine them, so one hobby has to suffer. Since there's little reward with losing money (I think I'm 60/40 when I visit the casino), I just give in to records. But there's nothing more terrifying than knowing bills are due and having to scrape money together. Most of the time I do well, but I'm not saving anything, just getting by. That is almost as irresponsible. The best thing is to get on a budget and stick to it. This is my New Year's resolution. But I love to look...therein lies the problem. I cannot stop looking. I search eBay. Go to the record stores. Serach Craig's List. AHH. I can't stop.

somethingvinyl
There are periods of time when I'm just buying because I haven't bought anything in a while. I'm just taking a chance, getting a deal, checking out new things. Then, something I really want comes along and for a good price and I have to get it. kriss
We have a certain amount that we attempt to keep in our bank accounts at any given time. If we start getting a few hundred dollars within approaching distance of that amount, we do a spending freeze until more money comes in. karadotcollett
Uh... I don't control myself. I just bought a lot of stuff off eBay and various distros cause it was cheap. I decided I wanted to have complete Relient K, Manchester Orchestra, Hawthorne Heights and O'Brother collections too...

Guest mellietronx
I question if the record is worth the money I'm about to throw down and if I am going to listen to it more than once.
harryq
I get really cynical and cheap, especially after making a big purchase (e.g., the dragon tattoo deluxe edition, kepi ghoulie personalized hand-painted covers, etc.). I haven't bought any records in ~3 weeks, even though I want new things to listen to over my winter break that said, I'm typically quite cynical (I'm not even sure it's worth posting this comment) and cheap (my diet this semester consisted primarily of pasta, popcorn, pretzels, and grapes, though this is probably the result of my cynicism...), so I'm not sure if that counts. robthepenguin
I've slowed down from what I was doing. I've started selling more. It's funny, when I get a couple deals done and look at my paypal balance, I start searchin' ebay....... and there's so much Jawbreaker stuff.... Uh oh...... hipsterasfolk
How I stay financially afloat is rationality. By judging my records (hobby) compared to allotted money for bills/food/utilities/gas and etc. I found it helps to have several checking accounts (2) so you can manage money in a rational way, impulse buying does happen;but you know what to expect when it's on paper.
