julian
So, I'm going to China with my brother and a few friends this spring break. It's my first time flying out of country and I was just wondering, would I be able to take records back with me on the plane? I wasn't sure if vinyl in general was allowed on planes. This all may be an obvious "yes" or "definitely not", but yeah, I'd appreciate the help. If so, does anybody know of any good record stores in the main "tourist" areas of China, such as Xian, Beijing, or Shanghai?
xjustinxschwierx
yes, I've flown with huge boxes of vinyl in my carry on, they will more likely than not inspect it, but I've never had a problem yet, most people are amused by their existence than anything. sharkie
I was able to board a plane with a few records I picked up while in Philadelphia, but they were in a bag and I was just going between Philly and Miami (in 2006ish).
hickey
Yes, records are fine as long as they are in a bag/box of a size that fits with the carry-on policies of the airline. If they're in a bag from a record store, keep a close eye on them while going through security. One time the line got backed up and a bunch of people's bags/stuff nearly crushed my bag of records. steviex2shoes
Yeah last time I went home to buffalo I was visiting my friend from Dead Hearts and right before I had leave came back and gave me a bunch of their records and 7"s that he has sitting in storage. Security let me right through with it.
jase
And make sure you don't let one if the hostesses stow it in the overhead for you. If you're taking more than just a few they'll get upset at the weight, and potential for injury 'if' it somehow falls out and on to someone. somethingvinyl
If you have a messenger bag or backpack, just bring a mailer with you and keep them in that.
itmustbereal
I bring vinyl home every time I travel. Just bring a bag they will fit in and stow them under the seat in front of you. Has worked really well for me in the past.
mcm1610
I brought some on a plane with me from Chicago a couple years ago. No problems.
dreamover
I did hear they are no longer allowing CDs or DVDs through security anymore. VHS and vinyl are okay, but I hear VHS tapes get demagnetized in the X-ray machines. Hope this helps!
julian
All of this helps. I really appreciate all of the replies.

smailtronic
It's been said, but yeah, bring a bunch of mailers and a bag that you can just slide them in. I've flown with them both under seat and in the overhead. But in the overhead only if you can set it in place so it doesn't move around, or so other things don't fall on it. flood
one year on the way to fest we had like all of our boxes opened and the records swabbed and anyalyzed.. it was the biggest bitch ever... of course my friend chris looks like a terrorist so that probably prompted it
theinkd
yup bring a tote bag, and use it as your personal carry on
adictsdroog1
I'd hit a local record store and ask for a mailer. I put that in my checked bag. I know not the smartest thing to do, but they were safe when I got home
albert
I have carried many vinyl in my carry on bag and carefully held them throughout the flight on my lap. No big deal at all.

genuma
yeah, the couple times I've bought records on a trip I make sure to carry them on. I don't trust them with my checked bags at all.
mrnubnub
Do they even have record stores in China?
Guest tapeflipper
Man, I hope your fucking plane goes down.
cloud87
Only thing to look out for is second hand records that have drug residue on them. I knew a guy who got held up at the airport cos of it. Apparently the previous owner of the records was cutting his coke on them.
