Mars Hill Music/Tooth and Nail

Recommended Posts

Also, I'd suggest that this thread be locked at this point unless anyone objects and would like to discuss further, I think everyone has made their point semi-respectively without resorting to personal attacks, even jhook.

It seems to me that any further discussion from this point would be inflammatory.

Either way, I feel like I've made my point so I'll bow out.

All religion has no place in punk. Let me give more examples using other religions. I am bummed that I can't jam these records while explaining to a set of parents that the priest who molested there child has been molesting children for years but has been moved around because "god" will make him better. I am bummed I can't jam this record while I watch someone die because medical treatment was not given to them because "god" will make them better. I am bummed I can't watch this while looking at photos of every innocent person that has been killed in the name of "god". I am bummed I can't jam this record while a same sex couple is denied benefits and rights because of "god" not allowing them to get married.

Chill out man !

I am bummed that I wont able to jam these tunes on vinyl while I have my friends over for our weekly prayer group where we pray for the deaths of all homosexuals and for the closing of all planned parenthoods.

Interesting fact about me: I am an actively practicing Christian - just don't talk about it. So liberal I can't register as a Democrat. I was married by a Gay Priest at the pulpit of one of NYC oldest Episcopal Churches. I hate Christian music but love Krishna Hard Core.

And JHook - The Misfits wrote many songs about killing, babies include, and I love those LPs. I GOT SOMETHING TO SAY....

There is hatred both in and out of organized religion. I can't hate certain minority cultures because they are traditionally homophobic. My friend beaten for being gay and left for dead - it wasn't done by a church. I just can't narrow things like this down so simply. There are certainly certain sects that can be disdained - Westboro is an easy one - but you can't do it for religion as a whole.

Anyway, I won't talk specifically about me or my parish or anything. I prefer it be personal and I'm incapable of preaching. I just think I have a reasonable perspective.

Ya, I think the Mars Hill Business practices aspect has been discussed in a forum in the past. I really wanted to focus this more on the music aspect than the Mars Hill as a church aspect.

And I'm not trying to recruit anyone, just sharing an article that I found to be interesting because I'm interested in the music.

A quick google search brings up shady business practices by the Mars Hill church. I didn't mean to attack anyone. The internet is a wild place where it is hard to gage emotions. I just feel that when religion mixes with music it has a recruiting type vibe to it.

Not saying there aren't shady business practices but I know  there are quite a few Mars Hill Churches. Rob Bell's MarsHill had a large amount of shadiness and problems a few years back. Its funny because I said the same thing about the "recruiting vibe" the first time I listened to terror.

I entirely agree, further to that, Tooth and Nail has proven in the past to treat their bands very poorly, there are many bands that have had a falling out with T&N/SS.

The very valid point you bring up is one of the reasons I have a hard time swallowing the idea of mass produced/marketed worship music.

Having grown up in the church I feel I can add my two cents.

Most churches are full of great people, most of them are just very very misguided. If your belief isn't hurting anyone than who cares...

I even like folks like Rob Bell who preach for a more evenhanded approach, saying that gays have rights and all, but that's a different Mars Hill.

This is the Mars Hill run by Mark Driscoll and that guy is psycho. http://www.vice.com/read/the-secret-sin-of-mark-driscoll

You are entitled to an opinion, and I don't think anyone is denying that. But applying your opinion as a blanket statement to everyone who talks about god seems to be closed minded and intolerant, the same thing of which you accuse religion/Christianity of.

The truth is not a "blanket statement" jhook was just pointing out the atrocities that are committed every day in the name of god....he wasn't attacking anyone

the only close mindedness that exists is people ignoring that these things happen and continuing to support organized religion

 Not a fan of Terror.

Jersey Dave- as a practicing Christian do you feel that sub culture can be used as a recruiting tool to steer wayward/confused teens into the religion? Kind of like Krishna core in the late 80's early 90's? By the way if I had too I could listen to 108's songs of separation a couple times in a row.

I never stopped listening to 108's songs - such a great LP, a real seminal piece in my collection. I remember seeing them at the old Utility House in Gainesville in 1995 and a bunch of Krishna's from the local farm came to see them and didn't look too happy.

I don't know, music influenced me politically and socially. I think I found a positive path through it. It's a slippery slope but I think it isn't being used to strongarm people into believing things, I think the majority of people that spend their time making awful religion inspired music come from a place where they genuinely want to share something important to them like any other band.

Music has had no influence on me religiously. My Pop is a Devout Catholic who knew Pope John Paul 2 - My Mom is Jew. I rejected both. I really think religion is very personal and a) is not for everyone and b ) requires exploration. I guess I can see some music as being a means to explore. At one time in my life due to my vegetarianism someone told me I had to try buddism. I wanted to like it but it didn't appeal to me.

I don't have the definitive answer, I just don't believe in black and white. I watched kids at Food Not Bombs rail against religion on Sundays while I saw the Church down the street offer those same kids their kitchen to prepare that food. I watched that same church offer free meals 7 days a week. I just see plenty of good out there but I'd never say that all religious institutions are good and at the same time I wouldn't come close to saying all are bad.

I'm rambling. This isn't a subject I spend much time on honestly. I mentioned earlier it is personal and I keep it largely private accordingly.

Also, I'm way into Black Metal. This is a good spot for this story.

I am a member of my local YMCA, they give me a free membership for being a volunteer firefighter, it's a great facility. I have this sleeveless Bathory shirt I like to run in. It has a goats head on the front and a pentagram on the back. So I'm in the locker room sweating after a good workout and this old man, really wrinkly, comes over to me in nothing but a towel. "Are you a Satanist?" he asks. "Well no," I reply remembering the shirt, "Is this about my Shirt?" So I go on to explain that they aren't Satanists but Odinists and how Odin is a Norse God etc etc etc. The old man just stares at me like I'm insane and scary and walks away slowly wishing me a good night while shaking his head.

So I don't wear that shirt to the YMCA anymore. It's easy to forget that the C is for Christian.

I was just thinking of this story so figured I'd share.

Ha. I was hanging out in a driveway in Tallahassee one night after playing a show at my friends' house, and the house that backs up to their backyard was throwing an absolutely banging party. I guess one of the housemates heard the show, and came over and hung out with us, and we chatted for awhile, ending with him inviting us over. This party was awesome. Open bar, catered, a pickup truck in the backyard with a 4 ft. ice luge in the bed. I was there for about 5 minutes when a girl comes over and just starts shaking her head at me, repeating, "Nuh uh." Over and over again. I realized she was staring at my shirt, which she clearly disapproved of, and then told me I was not welcome at her house and escorted me out of the party. This was the offending shirt. tumblr_lolnxxRqT21qe482v.jpg

Florida can be scary Ryan. Does Brother Paul and his insane cadre of red jacket preachers still come to UF? I will never forget the afternood Damien from As Friends Rust jumped on his back after Paul kept telling girls that wearing jeans was an invitation to rape. He'd essentially rode him like a horse.
