mikeytags
So I'm about to buy a new turntable, and just wanted some opinions... If prices were pretty equal in-store and online, but your store didn't have the first choice color you wanted, would you still opt for the store since it's local and you could get it immediately, or would you buy online to get your first choice color and pay for shipping and wait for delivery? what are the other pros and cons of buying in-store vs. online? warranties, service, shipping damages, anything like that? any advice would be helpful... isavedlatin54
eh doesnt really matter. but yea having it shipped is always more risky.
Tardcore
The deal-breaker is probably warranty. I wouldn't buy online if the warranty wouldn't be honored unless I was getting a very steep (50%+)discount. Otherwise, why not buy online? I do not think that you automatically get better service by dealing locally/in-person and unless your local shop is manufacturing turntables on-site, it was shipped at some point. Here's a couple of reasons: 1. Did you use the store to test anything? Hear anything? or otherwise did seeing the item in person help you make your decision? Stores cost money to run. Having items on display to test and use cost money. If you went into the store, took up salesmen's time, used their displays, AND had a pleasant time doing so, you should strongly consider buying from that store. Don't use brick and mortar stores to window shop for online purchases. Keep doing it and there will be less and less brick and mortar stores. 2. Service after the sale and beyond. A good relationship with a good store has many benefits, including good deals and free services, because you are a repeat customer. 3. Most stores can order what they don't have in stock. I'm an impatient person, but if I can wait, I'm sure most people can as well. I'm not putting down shopping online, or putting anyone down. You asked for reasons, I answered. thefinalsound

I would definitely try to buy from your local store for all the reasons listed above. They should be able to order the color you want if they already stock the model. xxmartinxx
Price being about equal and unless the store only has some really awful color, I'd buy it in the local store. The color you should be buying is black, by the way. seangj
esbe
When I bought my first "real" turntable, I bought it at a brick and mortar store. After I got home and got everything set up, I noticed that when lowering the arm it moved towards the edge of the record on the way down, sometimes causing the stylus to actually miss the record completely. I didn't know shit about TT's then and am not especially handy anyway, so I brought it back to the store and they fixed it for free, on the spot. If I had bought online, this process would have been a pain, with shipping costs and much more waiting time. So now, while I will purchase some components online, turntables are an "in-store" purchase for me.
atticus
Yea. The thread I started entitled Pro-ject RPM 1.3 HELP is a pretty good illustration of why brick and mortar is the way to go. Granted I only bought online because I got a $500 deck for $350 but I can honestly say now that I would pay more at a brick and mortar to avoid what I'm going through with this table. upplegus
I live in Arkansas no one sells real turntables here. I'm going to take a trip through Dallas, Austin & San Antonio in July. Is there a nice list some where online of brick and mortar stores that sell turntables? Im hoping in one of the three cities I'm going through there are a couple of places to check out. Thanks

kannibal
Waterloo is a record store not a stereo store.
konk
Yeah, last time I went they had Ions and the van that drives on the record. I'm sure those places have some good shops though. Not sure about San Antonio. Dallas probably has the best hifi store in the south. Don't know what it is though.

DJ Quik
I guess it doesn't matter, but I chose to buy locally that way any issue I take it to the local record store owner who is really cool with helping out with these things I could have saved like $20 in taxes buying my project debut carbon on Amazon but local customer service for years to come far outweighs the hassle of online returns
