Right now the BDP-103 is still a popular choice at $500 when the competition has products in the $50 range. Usually people will recommend to ditch the AVR, but that particular AVR is the Denon equivalent to the Marantz SR7009. It should at least be competent. I'd start with going through your Turntable setup to confirm everything is in order there.

Fixing audio with EQ is sort of like trimming your beard with a chainsaw. If a particular song isn't mixed to your liking, adjusting high/low/mid is going to change a relatively huge range of frequencies across the board. if a particular piece of gear is falling a bit short on a particular range, adjusting high/mid/low isn't likely to compensate for exactly the frequencies the gear is over/under representing. That said, all this falls under "if it sounds good to you" doctrine.

Positioning is pretty important. If you can't keep them far enough away from the wall, you'll want to plug the bass port (assuming it's rear ported like the RX line) otherwise bass will be really boomy and exaggerated.
