Mule Variations can't be easy to master for vinyl fwiw. You have Bone Machine noisey tracks but also acoustic numbers with strings and blues-y songs. The dynamic range is all over the place.

Same goes for any prolific artist: GBV, Billy Childish, Stephen Merritt in all his guises, Dwyer/Thee Oh Sees + infinite name variations, Brock Van Wey, Leyland Kirby, Acid Mothers Temple... Not sure where all this KGatLW backlash is coming from all of a sudden. I mean, objectively speaking, that one sole Here Lies Man debut blows every other stoner-rock album out of the water this year, KGatLW included, so it's not like I don't know that I'm basically going into Torche meets The Residents (by way of The Cramps and Bardo Pond) every time I put a KGatLW album on.

@zdkaiser totally nailed it. Really, the "White Whale" aspect of it as well as nostalgia for a few of the cuts would compel me to resubscribe but it doesn't hold up all that well. Even in 1999 Massive Attack's Mezzanine was running laps around this and Kid A would soon destroy Moby's chances of being a megastar. Part of me would be down for a 2xLP Best of Moby since I kind of like "We Are All Full of Stars" from the follow-up to Play which was mostly naff but I mostly want the good stuff from Play, "Go" and a few of his class early 90s stuff in a package. Anyone wonder if this will lead to a Play: The B-Sides 2xLP, maybe on persimmon coloured vinyl? I'd be interested in owning both if both were available rather than either separately tbh.

No, 45rpm guarantees more detail grooves; literally more fidelity because more info is recorded into the PVC. Surface noise has a lot to do with the quality of the PVC and the pressing process. I'd bet my left nut those Metallica albums got pressed at GZ or Pirates Press, where quantity > quality, always.
