Lift Yr Skinny Fists makes me happy to be alive. There aren't many other records I can convincingly say that about.

This is kind of how I feel.  I actually revisited LYSF today, to gauge how I feel about the album in comparison to other L candidates.  And as much as I hate the idea of dedicating two votes to the same artist (see; entry F)... I just don't know.  The last track of Skinny Fists makes me feel like I'm quite possibly listening to the most important thing I've ever heard.  Tough call, especially when you consider just how much the Low Level Owl compilation encompasses.

Seeing this thread for the first time.  This is fucking awesome.  I'm sitting in a massive library at my school, and this has kind of made me rethink what the fuck I'm doing with my life.  I've always wanted to teach, I think it would be awesome to be able to have some sort of positive impact on kids, no matter how small it might be.  But for some reason I'm taking business, and it seems like the least fulfilling/empty thing I could have possibly chosen.  Even if I start a company and make millions of dollars, I'll never do anything this fucking cool.

"You get a limited-edition double gatefold vinyl pressing of the new album for $200"

Somebody actually sat down and typed that out and was like "yeah this works"

OK. All threads have been deleted and put in for he spam account to be deleted.

Now. In the barrage of reports on the threads and account, this message was included:

"made 40 threads over 3 hours and nobody has done anything about it. Poor effort on behalf of the admin and mods"

That bothers me as I have to ask why call it out on a poor effort to address when this all went down in the wee hours of the morning/night and we're not up all night posting on message boards. Do you think there's like a special alarm that wakes us up in the middle of the night whenever there's an issue on the boards or someone is reporting something or complaining?

Next time remind me to give out the number to my Batphone so I can be at your beckon and call.

You're asking for something we can't give you honestly, you can't get an actually story, instrumental music is meant to evict emotion and can paint a mental image if you're willing to work with it, I know that when I listen to instrumental music I can get camera shots and angles almost like a film score in my head, so here's an example:

Someone is very Ill a trip to the hospital is life or death, they call 911 and the ambulance trys to help her and she's struggling  and struggling they need to get her to the OR stat. So they rush here through floor after floor, hallway after hallway, at about 1:24 they're operating and trying their best, the family is anxiously waiting in the lobby and all seems well. Until at 2:06 they lose her and begin scrambling to recover her they try as hard as the can harder, and harder, 3:17 all is well.

This is stupid I know but I tried now you just have to open your mind.

Oh, yeah. Sorry for the confusion. If you wanted a literal story - you know, for the folks who need things spelled out to them - I guess you could turn to Taylor Swift. She'll spin you a tale or two that'll break your heart right down the center. Or there's Blink-182, who weave epic stories of fucking dogs in the ass and grandparents who shit their pants. All of that is indeed too much to convey through instrumental bands, correct.

Your imagination creates the story. Why tell you what a song tells me?

If you don't like music without lyrics then how can you say you like music? Why don't you just read poetry?

I don't even know how to address this. C'mon, Bowski. If anything, I'd say that instrumental music is more thought-evoking and open to interpretation than music with lyrics. I found it pretty boring back when I was 14 or so, but over the years it's proven to be some of the most rewarding "noise" I've ever heard. To say that music isn't truly music if it lacks spoken lyrics... I don't know. I feel like that's one of the most ridiculous claims you can make. Obviously we're all entitled to an opinion, but music has existed for a long, long while without vocals. You're missing out on a whole lot if you plan to write off bands without clearly decipherable vocals.
And can we briefly discuss how a lot of artists have some completely shitty / embarrassing / awful lyrics? Some stories don't need to be told.

You're looking at this too directly. Lyrics tell you how to feel, in a sense. I can't tell you how an instrumental song will produce an emotional response with you or with anyone else. If you feel nothing, you feel nothing. I feel nothing from punk music, but I don't think that it doesn't hold it's own weight in the musical universe.

I almost cried when I saw this band live, so I'll give you this.

'Contact' from Come Now Sleep by As Cities Burn
'The Birth and Death of the Day' from All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone by Explosions in the Sky
'A Three Legged Workhorse' from This Will Destroy You by This Will Destroy You

also 'Torches Together', 'Messes of Men', and 'February 1878' by mewithoutYou, from Catch For Us the Foxes, Brother Sister, and Ten Stories respectively.

edit: oooh also 'Back to Back' from The Fiancee by the Chariot
