I actually quite hate making 'top' anything lists, because I can't make decisions.  This list leaves out so many of my favourite musicians and feels so incomplete as far as even touching on enough different styles or moods. The more I think about it, the more I would add and it would get tougher to decide, so I tried to not over-think it (ha!).   But every album here I can listen to the shit out of straight through and never get tired of.   It is probably a pretty odd list for some of you, but whatever.  Oh and I broke the rules because there are 11:

    Tool - Lateralus
    The Cure - Seventeen Seconds
Faith No More - Real thing
    Beatles - White album
    NIN - Pretty Hate Machine
    Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Led Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy
Tea Party - Edges of Twilight
    Pearl Jam - Ten
Dead Can Dance - Toward the Within
    Belly - Star

The funny thing for me is that top 10 was pretty easy, but having a top 25 would be infinitely harder for me. I listen to so much fucking music that even a top 50 would be challenging, but my top 10 are damn solid as my favorite so they're easier to place. Like, how would I sort out the following:

I was talking to a dude between bands at a show with my friend and he referred to us as "you cats," people in his anecdotes as "this cat," etc. I could stand it, but I thought it fit with people talking about terms of endearment.
As far as what I can't stand, music edition:
*is playing/listening to something remotely emotional* "What are you playing/listening to? It makes me wanna kill myself."

This. The Grandaddy/Arm of Roger album that just got the fun little limited release on vinyl for the first time....we're talking a full pressin of 200 pieces took 9 months for the plant to press it and get it back to the label. How many millions of soundtracks and major label reissues that came in after they place their order in January this year were pushing it back in line?
There's a reason that you see/find soundtracks in thriftstores.....
you'd be damn hard pressed to find jawbreaker records in a garage sale or at a thrift store....
RSD styled novelty pieces are sincerely ruining something I find a lot of joy in. I don't care that anybody enjoys different genres on the format, I do care that we need 4-5 limited variants for every single new pressing of everything.....the fact that more goes into variants than properly mastering the audio to maximize the sound quality of the format is bothersome.
With everybody having to throw these together to even attempt to get them pressed in under a year's turn around without outsourcing to the Czech Republic....I just. Seriously, it's less about people's preferences and more about the product actually meaning more than a mantle-piece to music enthusiasts.

Where are you getting the idea that I am justifying this? I fully believe that this lady deserves a refund and that the seller has screwed her around.

But I also don't believe that this guy is a scammer and that he sold records that he knew to be in awful condition cackling to himself as he informed her over and over that they were in great shape knowing that he'd soon have her money and there was nothing she could do about getting it back because he had this little plan all worked out.

He's just one of the many people listing huge amounts of stock for sale without really bothering to check the accurate condition of any of it (or sometimes if they even actually own a copy at all) and just chucking in the vague "NM/EX" for everything. He's probably been doing this for a decade and is too trusting in his memory of what he has and in what condition. I think he is lying about him checking the stock, but I think in his head the records were in the condition he graded them as being in, and he's defensive that somebody is challenging him on that.

Rather than just saying "this guy is wrong, demand a refund!" it's better to acknowledge that these people exist, that there's nothing we can do about them existing and that it's better and more productive to talk about how to identify them so people know to avoid them in the first place.

I don't know how prevalent this is around the world but over the last year or so I'm seeing all the facebook shit like "A REAL MAN grows a BEARD!" or "A beard is a sign of class and dignity" or "Yes, you can touch my beard!" or, the worst - "Date a man with a beard - growing a beard takes patience - the patience needed to put up with your bullshit!"

I found this question on another forum and hadn't ever really thought about it before. I tried to go through my top ten, which is always difficult, and expected the number to be a lot less, but I'm on nearly half women artists/bands and half men. Just thought it was an interesting question to think about.

Diamanda Galas - The Divine Punishment
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
