I'm curious if Jack threw Chandra under the bus for no reason?  Or did his closing argument have a big impact on the hung jury?

He did it in an attempt to cause a mistrial, stalling the conviction so he could try and fix the situation, and yes his closing argument split the jury. That was a hell of a moment for his character right there.

Spoiler

Yeah, that was a great moment.  What was the deal with him and the cat?  I'm sure there was some kind of symbolism with the cat but I wasn't quite sure what they were going for.

I think it was more of a nod to him being lonely and becoming content with it. Like having the cat was enough for him at this point in his life. Remember when he tells the pharmacist he doesn't give a fuck about them having "his" Viagra in stock?

Also the scene with them in the deli talking about the trial, he explains that even though this was a big turning point in Naz's life it's not important to the world, all either of them can do from this point forward is try and live normally. Then he gets on the subway, sees the woman sitting across from judging his appearance, spots a sign for his legal practice above the door and just kinda smirks. Like he finds his existence laughable to a certain degree. Like he's humbled and knows his place, of sorts.

I know I'm rambling, but that's what I found very depressing about the ending. Naz's addiction is another horrible outcome from the events of this situation. All these strangers addicently come together and their lives are completely different now.

I see the cat situation a lil differently. It seemed like he saved the cat when he felt like he had a legit chance to save Nas. Once Chandra put Nas on the stand, seemingly sealing his guilty fate, John once again gave up the cat. Feeling that he did in fact save Nas with that closing argument, John goes back to the shelter and saves it.

He's persecuted, hated by most of his community, and addicted to hard drugs. He's the farthest from free he'll ever be.

I get your point, but you can't tell me he'd be more 'free' locked up in a cell.  He has more options on the outside.
