jerseydave77
Good Grantland article on the worst contracts in MLB. Makes for a good debate starter. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8914127/jonah-keri-worst-contracts-mlb I'm shocked Lackey is only #7. lemongoat
So what? War is a counting stat, not an average. It's not quite a counting stat the way your "runs produced" is a counting stat. WAR makes all surrounding elements equal. "Runs produced" leaves a guy with 117 fewer AB's with RISP to have no chance. If you're comparing seasons based on counting stats, then you're putting half the argument on their teammates.

Yeah, hitting 3rd is advantageous for RBIs but hitting leadoff is also advantageous for runs. Do you know the formula for O-War? I might look for it. Part of this too is that I'm not saying that there shouldn't be stats that try and separate performance from team, but those stats shouldn't be used in the MVP discussion. It's an award for on the field production, not "who would be the best player if ABs are equal and they are hitting in a vacuum without anyone around them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Matt Morris, 1 yr/ $10 million for the pirates in 2006? pitched 3 games and retired with the full $10 million. I mean, for a franchise that sucks and is crying they're losing money 24/7... thats gotta be one of the worst contracts ever.

thebiglebowski
They should have moved that team out of Miami. Who wants to sit in a swamp and watch baseball in the middle of July? Not that Texas is any cooler but at least it's dry heat. Won't happen for 30 or 40 years now after building a new stadium. Trying to think of a team that could use a baseball team...Portland? Nashville? Indianapolis?
thebiglebowski
I didn't want Bourn anywhere near my team. Speedsters in their 30s do not age well.

I swear I don't disagree with you for the sake of it... While his type of player may not age well, when you look at the money that has been going around the last few years, I think 4/48 is very very reasonable. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Vegas vegas heat SUCKS. Marlins are going nowhere, they just buit that massive stadium. Tampa Bay is more likely to move than the Miami Marlins
chiefwahoo
Very excited that the Tribe backed into yet another free agent in Bourn that never would have typically signed here. Beggars can't be choosers, especially when the front office isn't known for throwing money around. If we still suck and it's just trade bait down the line, so be it. Definitely excited for the season, far more than I was a few months ago before we signed Swisher and things were still pretty much status quo. You have to think, "what does everyone else believe about this player that I am missing?" I wouldn't want that contract. I would have offered a 2 year deal with vesting options that automatically kick in for performance (like scoring 100 runs), same as you would an injury prone player. chamb117
1) lebowski, did you ever look up the O-war formula? i know you mentioned runs produced (and not OBP, steals, etc.) but wouldn't runs created by considered too? then factors such as steals would be included. 2) bourn got screwed by boras and the new free agency rules but i agree, i think a shorter contract is probably in the best interest of the indians with someone like bourn. 3) as an angels fan, i was totally on the mike trout bandwagon last year, but every time i look at his stats, they seem less impressive... especially when i go back and look at a-rod's rookie season. it actually pales in comparison. so yes, i get that he was 20, but i also think he's closer to his ceiling than people think. 4) that marlins ballpark is there to stay. billions of taxpayer dollars invested in it... ridiculous. thebiglebowski
There's some info on WAR calculations out there but when I googled it and didn't find a site that was essentially "this is how WAR is calculated" I didn't look deeper. jhook
Vegas Yeah I was just kind of throwing this out there. A major sport will never come to Vegas. Could you imagine the P.R. nightmare that would ensue on a nightly basis? Also I am interested in joining a fantasy league. I already play in two ultra competitive leagues. Gambling has become more prevalent across the US as a revenue generator. Used to be Atlantic City and Vegas, now there are casinos in Detroit, Ohio, Colorado, Mississippi. I don't know about the rest, but MI doesn't have sports gambling. But if gambling continues to become more prevalent, maybe this could change. jhook
Not only gambling, You have the night clubs, the strip clubs and the overall atmosphere of Vegas. Dudes would be getting in trouble all the time. The major sports leagues would want nothing to do with it.
thebiglebowski
I guess that's true. You can pretty much do anything you wanted to do in Vegas in Detroit as well. Can't hop around on the strip like Vegas but it's not like pro athletes just walk in the front door. They usually have private rooms. I agree with you that it almost certainly won't happen. I wouldn't go to "never" though.
mclz
CC lost a lot of weight. Hope this doesn't negatively effect his pitching. Fat CC was great and it might take a while for him to get used to pitching how he normally pitches.
