This artwork is way better. But back in 1999, seeing a dude who wasn't in Stryper wearing eyeliner was pretty controversial for the Christian community. Since Zao were still known as a "Christian" band then, it was a bit of a noise maker. They got the attention they were looking for. So while the artwork wasn't great, the reaction was, thus Zao succeeded.

I sold merch for Bleach at Cornerstone 2000, and had several long talks with John Reuben's mother (next booth over) about all the censorship around this album, the Deadlines, Norwegian christian metal acts, and pretty much every edgy release of that era. For this album, the big Christian bookstore chains only agreed to carry it if they got alternate cover art with certain tattoos airbrushed out, and other concessions.

Not surprised that the band wasn't happy with the artwork.
