My local record store burnt down :'(

Recommended Posts

Today my girlfriend called me and said "It looked like the door was burnt off of Spiral Scratch when I drove by it."

I immediately tuned to my local message board and there were a few people asking about all the commotion outside the store. About an hour later it was confirmed that it burnt down.

I guess their were mounds of melted records outside the door. Just the thought of that makes me depressed.

I have no idea what caused the fire, but I'm sure it will be announced over the next day or so.

It's such a bummer. Spiral Scratch was pretty much the only independent record store in Buffalo.

Spiral Scratch was one of the record stores that was chosen to be on the cover of the Fucked Up - Daytrotter 7in for this years Record Store Day.

Dave, the guy who owned Spiral Scratch, was such an awesome dude. I was in there last night to pick up a few records I had ordered, and order a couple more. Dave had gone out of his way to track me down a copy of the Fucked Up 7in with Spiral Scratch on the cover because I was bummed I missed out on Record Store Day. I was third in line, and there was only 2 on the shelf. Almost a month later Dave calls me saying he found one for me. I picked it up last night.

So fucking bummed. R.I.P. Spiral Scratch :'(

For anyone interested, this is what Dave, the owner, had to say:

"from the bottom of my busted up heart i'd like to thank each and everyone of you for your thoughts/concerns and of course your support over the last little while since we opened. we really wanted to make something special here; fill a void and i knew i wouldnt become a rich man doing it...but it's been pretty interesting and fun. we were finally getting to the breaking even and get a pizza tonight point.

but hold yer horses, we aint going anywhere just yet.

i know that picture looks pretty grim and to be honest, it is. richie, erich from rise above tattoo, eric 'green party' jones and some others hung around and we did a few walk-throughs and its not a total loss, though it is a serious blow. obviously, we will be closed for awhile. most of the damage was up front, a lot of shit like credit card machines, registers, blah blah blah. and records and heat/water dont mix. up front is a lot of my records and some shit i was pricing...but while its a serious blow, we dont think its a knockout shot. anyone who knows me well knows im very pessimistic, but i dont think its over judging by our inspection. id be the first to say "its done", but its not.

i'd go into more details, but id like to see what the insurance company has to say first. i know looking inside from the sidewalk looked like hell--i was ready to run into traffic, but after they let us in, we realized we lost a lot, but not everything by any means. we have a serious clean-up to do and other assessments, and that'll get going tomorrow morning.

thank you all again...i truly appreciate your concerns. we had a lot of good friends helping out and people stopping by. kept me sane, at least until i got home. pretty surreal...still havent the slightest idea how it started but the open sign and and old light up scrolling sign were "confiscated" by the fire marshal. they had no clue, either.

no RIP's just yet. posi, motherfuckers.

also...if youre a band who had stuff on consignment...well, we'll try and figure that out. all of our (paper) records and computer were casualties, it looks like..but this deathship will rise again.

so...yes, the damage is severe, but we aint done just yet.

thanks again. ill know more tomorrow."

this cracks me up. how pissed are you Martin?

So annoying. I literally prayed that the store would start on fire when I owned it. Further proof God exists and that he hates me.
