moonbeams
I remember reading that some people get peeved about expedits turned on their sides. Is this dangerous? I want 2 rows and 6 to 8 columns. I was thinking of getting a 2x8 expedit and turning it on it's side. bad idea?
icecream
I don't think there is a proper way seeing as how Ikea themselves display the expedites on their sides.
andrewc
Someone should post the picture of the collapsed record shelf due to improper installation. The shorter shelves that normally go vertically that are connected with dowels have failed before under stress.
andrewc
In both cases, see how the longer shelves were put vertical and the shorter horizontally? That is "sideways" and an incorrect installation which resulted in catastrophic failure.
circlingvultures
i think the only acceptable expedit to have sideways is the 2 x 5. the small ones are the ones they show on their sides. Anything larger will fail if loaded up. My 5x5 is set up correctly and I still worry sometimes.

mrc
Ill let you know. Im moving back into my parents place in a couple weeks and ill have a 2x4 laid down horizontal. I cant imagine there would be enough weight to make a 2x4 collapse.
harryq
I have a 2x4 sideways with an lcd tv on it, and so far so good
adamlikesmusic
Yeah, it seems to only be an issue with a 4x4, and even at that it probably would have to be weighed down pretty heavily. They display 2x4 on its side at the IKEA near me, and I can't imagine there being enough weight to cause it to collapse.

smailtronic
I like how there are two different sizes of Expedits mentioned in this thread that don't actually exist.
steventangent
I lol'd. At any rate, if you guys check the ikea website, it will tell you that the 2x4 can be placed on it's side. I imagine that any of those that can have this listed as a feature, and by exclusion, those that don't list it should not. I was checking earlier to see if the one closest to me has the 4x4. It's only $99 now. I think I'll get the "walnut effect." I think that's what it's called. That'll add a touch of class.
circlingvultures
I like how there are two different sizes of Expedits mentioned in this thread that don't actually exist. I meant 2x4, not 2x5. Didn't catch that.
moonbeams
I have a white one and a black turntable. I thought maybe black would be smoother with the turntable. But I like the white. Moving in a few days and it looks like the two by two is going to be left behind.

scooterist136
I nailed a piece of masonite to the back of my 4x4 (set up with the long pieces going horizontally) to help hold the entire thing together. I recommend doing this on any size you may have.
alertthemute
I have the 1x5 on its side... No problems so far.

I recommend doing this on any size you may have. Smart move. Plus that adds a back to help keep the records all even in the shelves. I would do that with any size too. It's amazing how much strength that adds. I was getting ready to do that, but then I found out IKEA's shipping rates are outrageous and had to find a alternative. I mean 5 12x12 cubes sitting next to one another horizontally is gonna topple over super quick. I don't know what I was thinkin!
