oakland
Time are tough for journalists everywhere. I started my own company, which was going great until the economy really started sucking. Anyway, an old friend of mine is the Editor of an alternative weekly newspaper and is having spinal surgery. She asked me to stand in for her during her 8-14 week recovery. And I just found out today the publisher wants to hire me full time after the editor returns. They don't even know what they want me to do, he just said he couldn't risk losing me. Where have these people been for the last 12 months?

oakland
thanks. It's weird though. I've been out of work so long it's hard to sit still for eight hours.
dcstrange87
Glad to hear that, man! Right now my options after this coming semester will be some job having to do with journalism/english or grad school. The way it looks it will be more schooling. Good to see people still working in the journalist field.
oakland
It's tough, but what will Grad school get you besides more debt? I never hired anyone just because they had a masters. Most publications look for experience, not GPA or any of that shit. That said if you just want to kill time until the market improves go for it. It's also a good chance to write a long, in-depth story about an important topic you think is interesting. Won't be much time for that after you get a job. In any case, good luck. I will help you out in any way I can, just ask.

patron
thanks. It's weird though. I've been out of work so long it's hard to sit still for eight hours. It's much easier when you're doing something you love.

thedavidescapeplan
Congrats! I'm majoring in journalism now and hope to be able to amass a good amount of freelance clips by the time I'm done to make a decent resume.
scottheisel
I'd like to think that my lack of ever sending you a letter of recommendation is what really clinched this for you. PS: I'm a shithead and I'm sorry for never sending you a letter of recommendation.
djones0930
Viva el periodismo!!! Man, I thought for the longest time that journalism, real down-to-earth journalism, was a dying art. I'm so glad someone can still find a healthy job in that field and keep it alive. Good luck with everything!
oakland
Thanks so much guys. I'm stoked to be working again. For what it's worth, I still believe there is a place for journalism -- even print journalism -- in the world. It will be a lean industry for sure, but that's better than nothing. And Scott, don't sweat it. I'd still like that letter though.
