joshnotgood
The more I see threads and posts about them here the more I think I want to begin collecting. Some record stores here in MN (Cheapo to be specific) have thousands cheap. Someone tell me if this is a bad idea.
A_Boring_Story
I am now getting into collecting tapes as well. I think it's a good idea.
kriss
I've got probably 150 or so tapes to my name, most of them 90's era indie rock stuff. While I love having them, I find that I'll often go for records or mp3's before I make my way to them. There's a lot of cool limited run stuff that's out there and a lot of it never makes it onto vinyl, so tape/mp3 is the only way to get it - if the price is cheap (most new tapes are $5 or less), I say go for it. joshnotgood
Also, if there is anything interesting out there tapes-wise I should know about, please fill me in. Interested in any cool new releases on the format.
beneathbelow
I have a tape distro, about 1000 tapes from the late 80's to the early 2000's, tell me what your into and I'll see what I have, and sell you stuff super cheap. and everything is factory sealed. message me if your interested. mcm1610
Worst format ever. No tracks, lose their quality over time, can malfunction easy... what's the appeal?
madtired
Someone tell me if this is a bad idea. If you think keeping records in good condition over long periods of time is difficult, then good luck with the tapes. Imo, this is only being talked up lately by folks who think vinyl has jumped the shark (again) and now cassettes are the next thing. There are no inherent advantages to having recordings on cassettes in the year 2011. (take it from a guy who has 300 of them)

patron
My label puts out a lot of tapes. Just put out our 9th this year, actually. Lots of cool punk, pop punk, power pop stuff. We get a lot of flak from people, but enough people buy them to show that there is a decent group sized supporting the format. SecretAgentP
I have a large tape collection of songs I recorded from the radio circa 1999-2002. They're very limited. Any collectors PM me, might be willing to let these go for the right price.
steventangent
You can always find a lot of 80s and 90s death metal for dirt cheap. I always think about this when I come across Road Racer/Roadrunner, Nuclear Blast, and so on...then I think...I don't really need this shit in my house. controlthebleeding
most of the shit i have on tape isn't available in any other format so i get it on tape. ive always loved cassettes.

Vinyl never quite left because it was always considered to be a superior sound format. Now that physical media is no longer necessary CD's are going the way of the dodo so anyone who enjoys collecting and owning physical media are swinging back to vinyl and joining those that never left. Tapes offer none of those benefits. If you like having them then go right ahead, but I wouldn't expect them to hold value.
cman102030
Can't forget all of the awesome black metal releases that are happening cassette right now. Rhinocervs is where it's at.
selfreliable
The only thing I can think of why to get them is if you are a Cure fan. They have some cassette only songs. It takes a lot to break a cd, record, but not so much to have a tape fall apart on you.
mrc
i have about 10 or 15 tapes, and thats about all i need. I usually only grab demos or tour tapes, and i certainly dont need tapes for regular albums. that just silly.
adamlikesmusic
Pretty much only buy new demos/exclusives, though I have a pretty solid collection of older tapes from years ago. Not gonna waste the money on a new album that I know I'm never going to listen to on tape, though.
