Chromecast

I just googled it because I've never heard of it before.  I think I understand it, but I'm slightly confused lol.  Is it a wireless device? Because what I just read mentioned a cable running from the drive to a computer.

I'm lost.

It's wireless but requires a charger because it doesnt draw power from the HDMI which is a bummer

OH I understand.  It is still a really cool little piece of technology.  I have a blu-ray player that allows me to use Youtube/Netflix/etc in my bedroom, but I have been using my Nintendo to use Netflix in the living room.  This sounds like a cool alternative since the Wii is not HD.

Is the SD card slot used to house your own media to play on the TV?

Idk, the thing I read said there's a micro SD slot in the back end of the device.

Theres a micro USB that goes either to the charger or a usb cable but no micro sd card. I'm really excited to try this out though, and being able to stream youtube/chrome in general on my tv is gonna be pretty sweet. Gonna be browsing this thread on a 42" tv soon!

The USB port is for power, either using the included power brick or a USB out from your TV.

I will buy one when I'm able to fully mirror my entire desktop ala Chrome Remote Desktop, at the moment the only mirroring you can really do is a Chrome tab which I read is pretty laggy.

If you have a game console or Roku or similar streaming device this isn't really a necessity, although the Google Play Music streaming is pretty cool. At that price tag though there's no reason you shouldn't grab one to pop into a TV you don't have a media streaming device attached to.

Thanks for the clarification! The piece I read must've been misinformed, haha.

Who's gonna start TitFlix with me?

Perfect contribution to this thread, haha.

We unpacked 25 of these from the truck last night and were sold out within the first couple hours this morning. Was wondering how the hell everyone heard about this, had no idea it was even coming out.

For my money I would go with a network media player that supports dlna (streaming content from a computer over wifi) in addition to Netflix and smart apps. But then again I live on a pirate ship

EDIT: does this thing support dlna? If so what types of files/media servers are compatible?

Do you have one you'd recommend?  I feel like I'm living in the stone ages, running an HDMI cord from my PC to my TV.  Unlimited options and no lag, but I have this ugly fucking cord running through my kitchen.

Well Roku is a good recommendation, but personally I would go for the Western Digital WDTV. Same price as the Roku 3. If you need amazon prime streaming, I think Roku is the only one that supports it since the two companies have a partnership together. But WDTV has a faster processor than the Roku, USB for when friends bring over stuff on flash drives or hard drives, and unlimited dlna options for all of your downloaded content ;)

Not a big fan of Apple TV myself since it just doesn't support as many apps, mainly just the iTunes Store, Netflix, YouTube and AirPlay.

If you need/want a fully flash-enabled web browser (which seems to be a big selling point of the chromecast), the Sony GoogleTV is great although more expensive. For the price I think you're better off buying a PS3 which does everything (much faster as well) and is also a blu ray player of course (not to mention gaming). But the GoogleTV does have a nifty QWERTY keyboard remote with a trackpad on the other side. It's a cool little toy.

In short, I usually recommend the WDTV for the price.

So you can share more than just a tab with this. I used the share screen feature (which they call experimental, but it worked perfectly for me) to do my insanity work out this morning. The more I play with it the more I like it, and as they add functionality to it it'll just get more awesome.

It has potential, especially if the price stays so low as it evolves. But as of now, the Roku and AppleTV are a better deal overall.

Have you used all three or is this a broad generalization? The Apple TV is great for Apple users, beyond that there's nothing else it does that the Roku/Chromecast can't.

Correction: you can essentially 'AirPlay' content from an Apple device to the Chromecast, yet on the Apple TV this is only possible with their corresponding devices.

For those interested in DLNA, I heard Plex already has some programmers working on a version of their client for Chromecast. For those not familiar with Plex, you should definitely check it out. All my media is hosted using this.

The SDK is open for Chromecast. I'd imagine several DNLA options will be available really soon.

PS: Plex has been crap lately. I have to keep reinstalling an older version that actually works because it forces itself to auto-update and the new builds are super buggy.
