rafter242
I recently picked up Against Me - RAR (due to the overwhelming number of posts on this board.) I was previously unfamiliar with them. I did notice that the style of the songs were different from side 1 to side 2. So, my question is, do the subsequent albums by AM, more closely resemble the style of side 1 or side 2 or neither? goraiders
neither, they really do change from album to album. Albeit in a steady progression.
rafter242
Thanks. So I guess I am just going to have to take the plunge and order their next album.
jpw
The closer to present day you get the more "rock n' roll" the sound becomes. meaning less of the folky sound they have on their earlier records like RAR
flood
get disco before the breakdown next then cowboy. pick up crime, and the acoustic 7" as well... excellent records.
hickey
Flood is an AM! expert. However, my advice would be to go for the full-lengths in order first...grab As The Eternal Cowboy, then Seraching For A Former Clarity and then New Wave. You'll get a really nice idea of their sound and how they've matured. Personally, I find the 7"s less accessible. They're still good, but if you're just getting into them at this point in the game the 7"s could be a turn off, especially Crime and the Acoustic 7". That said Cowboy is my favorite AM! album. Guest baseball
Disco Before The Breakdown 7" is essential.
rafter242
I very much appreciate all this help. I have 1,000s of albums and feel like a n00b. I guess I'll never know everything, but it won't stop me from trying.
tombo
i reccomend the disco before the breakdown ep next. it links RAR and Cowboy better than just jumping album to album.
bouncingsoles123
As the Eternal > Acoustic > Disco > Searching > New Wave Searching and above are fantastic. New Wave sucks. Don't get New Wave.
googlemyass
youll find that new wave is a POS and will learn to cherish their earlier work
jinxremoving
Get disco before the breakdown, probably their best songs in there

flood
if you dont think thrash unreal is the best pop song of 2008, i dont know if we can be friends.
goraiders
I'm with flood, minus the pop part. It's at least rock. Although obviously its pretty poppy. I really like the first half of New Wave.
AlexH.
New Wave is not all that bad. Although the first half is better than the second half, it's still a damn good record if you're not concerned with being punx. and yeah, get The Disco before the Breakdown. justaminrthreat
Disco Before The Breakdown and then As The Eternal Cowboy shows a cool progression. New Wave is a solid album, in my opinion. I think I'm just not a big fan of the production. The previous albums sound more passionate. I don't know if I should blame Butch Vig or not, but that's the same problem I have with Nirvana "Nevermind"....great album, but it sounds too clean. Some bands weren't meant to have their sound cleaned up to sound like something that'll fit on the radio.
faith
I myself think that (album speaking) rar > cowboy > new wave > searching crime & acoustic > disco > cavalier & sfs > the rest
Guest falloutcollapse
Crime, Acoustic, and RAR are my favorite punk-ish albums. Searching and New Wave are some of my favorite rock albums. I don't like Cowboy.
adamlikesmusic
There's only 4 songs of theirs I dislike (1 off of SFAFC, 3 off of New Wave). All of their releases are good, granted they're also all very different.
mcm1610
New Wave isn't bad. I'd rank Clarity as their lowest mark, but I find that I only dislike it as an album. As individual songs (ie when someone plays a track here or there on their computer) I like (most of) them. But The album as an album is weak as hell. kyle
For all the overproduced, trendy ass bullshit that people listen to on this board I think it's funny that New Wave gets so much crap. I think it's a really good record.

I like the transitional "story" the songs all can be interpreted tell together. Lyrically, it's some of my favorite stuff of theirs. (Here's a couple people's interpretations from the nofxwiki (1)(2).) The only track I don't like on the album is "From Her Lips", and that's only because I feel it doesn't belong on the album. I always thought it could be a concept album...loosely, anyway. Those were some interesting ideas.
minty
For me, it's: As The Eternal Cowboy > Reinventing Axl Rose (Very close second) > Searching For A Former Clarity > New Wave.
