  1. Sweet. I'm following. If you want it to be fully complete, be sure to add Grey Kingdom's Light I'll Call Your Name Out Darkness, Spencer Burton's (who is Grey Kingdom going under his real name) Don't Let The World See Your Love, and also Daniel Fred and Julie's self-titled album (Daniel Romano, Fred Squire and Julie Doiron playing traditional folk songs, which was weirdly enough how I got into Daniel Romano and eventually Attack in Black).
  2. I love me some Attack in Black! Excited for this release! Listening to their music in chronological order (especially if you start with the 2 EPs) is especially interesting - they went from a scrappy punk to lo-fi folk-rock within a short span. And then all of their solo albums went in even further diverse directions (Daniel Romano's Sleep Beneath the Willow is a personal favourite, but also check out Grey Kingdom's Light I'll Call Out Your Name Darkness and Marine Dreams' Corner of the Eye).
  3. So I just listened to the two already released tracks, and I have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed. The Night We Met is okay, but Fool For Love is a complete retread of everything on Lonesome Dreams (especially Time to Run). I'm not saying the songs are bad, but they don't really seem to show much growth as a band - especially considering the leap from their early stuff to Lonesome Dreams. Here's hoping the rest of the album is more exciting or interesting. Think I'll need to hear all of it before ordering.
  4. You may get lucky though, depending on the honesty of the user in relation to how much the equipment was actually used. If someone tells me it was used 'a lot' or 'was in a closet for a while', I might be suspicious, but if I'm using something like http://www.usaudiomart.com, or http://ukaudiomart.com), there is feedback based on selling on there. And they usually have a better idea of equipment's history, and may perhaps show you how it works. This is a step up from a random Craigslist ad for someone's grandma's old turntable with no knowledge of how many cats have taken a ride on the table. Perhaps also consider buying used from a hi-fi shop where they can guarantee functionality, and at least walk you through how it might work.
  5. In all seriousness, I don't know a whole ton about vintage gear, but I have heard the Marantz 2235 and it is fantastic. Was looking for one for myself for a while, but ended up with a newer NAD amp.
  6. And sold! If I'm at the store again and they have multiple copies, I can y'all know in case others want one.
  7. Thanks for clarifying. I'm an east-ender too, and I suppose that the price you pay for having a shop East of Yonge is that it won't get as many people through the door. I feel like I need to call in advance to know whether what I want is in stock and/or find out prices first.
  8. Tiny Record Shop, which is an aptly titled record store in east Toronto, has just opened up an online shop. Their in-store sometimes is a bit overpriced (okay, more than sometimes), but if you sign up for their newsletter, you can get 15% off your purchase: http://www.tinyrecordshop.comand I'd imagine they'd let you do in-store pickups? Edit: no in-store pickups. Online-only prices...dang...
  9. I'm just excited to have new music from them. Originally found them on a whim (they were at the top of a new release list on Rdio when the album came out). I kind of feel like if they don't do a coloured version, then they don't do a coloured version. I'm excited to have this on vinyl no matter what. Same for a lot of bands - better to have black vinyl than no vinyl at all.
  10. At least 10 copies (White on Flemish Eye) available at Rotate This in Toronto. If anyone wants the copy I just bought (can get another one shortly for myself), $25US PPD to anywhere in Canada/US. PM me!
  11. Legit Canadian joke. Exchange rates, man. But seriously, excited for this. All of his music is always great!
  12. Alas, too good to be true...was for only One Beat. But I will say CCMusic were pretty good about it - they had mailed it already and refunded me regardless, without requiring me to return the record. So... Anyone want a copy of Sleater Kinney One Beat?
  13. Don't know if they'll cancel this on me, but: (and to Canada, no less...)
  14. I decided to get a new cartridge for my turntable. Went for a Grado Gold1. Was waffling a little bit, but apparently (according to two different shops), because of the weak Canadian dollar, the prices that are available now are going to go up considerably some time in the next couple of months (I bought for $225 CAD plus tax, which is roughly $180 US - when the next shipments come in, one of the guys suggested the cartridge may cost closer to $280...). Only had a few minutes to listen, and I think I'm still working on perfecting the alignment. I think I did a pretty good job considering... But anyways, I noticed everything right away (Big Star's #1 Record). The clarity in the hi-hats, the backing vocals, the bass, everything was suddenly...there... It was kind of remarkable, the difference it made (to be fair, my old cartridge/stylus were toast). I am still getting the tiniest bit of distortion (sibilance maybe?) at the end of records, and so I have a feeling my alignment may need to be slightly readjusted (that's probably not quite technical enough, but you know what I mean...). Thanks again to those who answered my original questions!
  15. Heads up that Dan Bejar of Destroyer's band Hello Blue Roses has a new album out now called WZO. Probably the least favourite of his many side projects (New Pornographers, Swan Lake), but will have to give this one a good listen. Order via Bandcamp: https://helloblueroses.bandcamp.com/releases
  16. For folks in Toronto: Field Trip has announced their lineup for this year. It's pretty interesting. Last year I got to go and it was a great time (the year before that my son decided to be born that day...). In a lot of ways, as usual, I'm more excited about the bands in smaller text below than the headliners (though a lot of them are coming into town before that - Father John Misty is coming next week, and is well sold out. Glad I'll get to see him sooner than later). Also, I fucking love Rhye.
  17. Real name: Daniel Favorite Bands: The Clash, Elvis Costello (predominantly pre-1986, but including 1996 and 2002), Tom Waits, Replacements/Paul Westerberg, The Wrens, Hayden, Fleetwood Mac, more. Hobbies (outside of record collecting) Hockey (Toronto Maple Leafs, unfortunately), books (mostly fiction, some non-fiction and music biography, but almost never short stories), technology and gadgets... Play in a band? Run a record label? Link us!: I've played music and in bands since I was 12. I still do, in a not-so-serious way, but play live shows with friends and family about once or twice a year. Here's a link to the website for my band from when I was 13 (warning: awesome 90s HTML): https://web.archive.org/web/20010725160738/http://www.angelfire.com/ak2/nooddreason/ Random things you want us to know about you: I work as an elementary special education teacher-consultant focusing on integration of assistive technology into curriculum for students with different learning and physical needs.
  18. Okay, so I'm thinking that once the 'official' RSD list is out, I'll make a separate thread with a form/spreadsheet for adding wants and set it up for those interested.
  19. Thanks so much Allen. I think that clarified a lot of what I was wondering about with regards to upgrading - and the fact that you said makes me change my thinking a little bit. I suppose that long term I will be looking to upgrade, but if adding a decent cartridge to my current TT may make enough difference, I know I will be glad to keep this TT. It's in pretty great shape except that every now and then it starts playing at 45 when it's set to 33 (just need to change the speed to 45 then back to 33 to get it working again), but as far as performance, it is totally solid. And I am the first to admin I love that it has auto start-stop and automatic speed change. Was looking to get a TT with a built in speedbox and possibly get a Q Up for a new one if I was going to upgrade.
  20. So I've recently upgraded my amp and speakers, but still have a vintage turntable with an aging Ortofon cartridge (probably 6-7 years old, and an embarrassingly high amount of hours), and I'm pretty sure the lack of clarity I'm hearing stems from the cartridge more than anything. I'm probably still a couple of months away from purchasing a new turntable - partly based on finance, looking for good used deals, and even just still not exactly sure what I want. I'm still not totally understanding everything about cartridges (when I got mine last, someone at the store installed it). So I have a couple of quick questions, if y'all don't mind. 1. Do most cartridges work on any turntable? Are they easy enough to install (I have a JVC QL-F4 Direct Drive)? 2. At what point would a used cartridge not be worth it if I were to buy used? 3. If, in 3-4 months I buy a $500-$600 TT, is it worth buying a cartridge now for around $100-150 that could be used as an eventual replacement for whatever comes with the new turntable? Or will I likely want to go for a higher price than that? 4. Possibly the dumbest question of all: I know what the stylus is, but what is the difference between replacing the whole cartridge and replacing just the stylus? Sorry if these are sort of dumb or possibly a bit redundant (there's definitely a bit of information on this forum or elsewhere, but I'm always happy to have feedback and opinions from you folks).
  21. Hey folks, I was just thinking about how there are a lot of good people on this board who will be genuinely seeking out albums for their own collections and listening pleasure. And I know that sometimes there are more copies of certain albums in some places more than others. I was trying to find a fair and beneficial way of setting up a system so that VCers can help other VCers out on RSD without having to resort to inflated Discogs or Ebay prices. So I decided to have some fun with Google Forms. Right now I've just sort of made a sample template. I would adjust this a little bit based on feedback and perhaps some other factors (input is gladly accepted). Basically, there would be two steps: First, a VC member can use the form to input a bit of information (no credit cards necessary...) with their username plus the desired album, and whether it is a regional release (we will likely wait for the official list to actually enter information). Then, 48 hours before actual RSD (which is like 25 hours from Australian RSD), a spreadsheet with all of the entries would appear. It looks and feels just like an Excel Spreadsheet, except that anyone with the link (as in it will only be shared with members interested - will have to figure out a good way to share the link) can respond and purchase a copy of a desired item for another member, indicating this on the spreadsheet. Because Google Spreadsheets update in real time, other users could see that a copy has been purchased (and wouldn't accidentally be stuck with a record for someone else). Here are the links to my samples. Feel free to use the form for fun, but know that this is just a sample. I'd love to hear feedback on how and/or if this might work, and then we can make a real one: Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1pJ5LWonQsPF6JQbCLy71Aq1RBb53PhENNLzE1gFAq9M/viewform?usp=send_form Spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rjKPYLpLny0bEIEPvq5E-0kFLdKYZX6Jeq0wBF9twCE/edit?usp=sharing (note: you'll find that the content entered via the form is un-editable. This is intentional.) Thoughts and feedback appreciated. Hopefully we can make this work!
  22. Is there a headphone input? If so, plug in headphones and see if you hear anything. Also, I don't know that model of receiver, but does it have a phono input?
