  1. If any Toronto folks are interested, it appears that Viet Cong are playing a free show (sponsored by Converse) at the Opera House next Friday. Free tickets here: https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/mobile/index/826339?utm_medium=bks Edit: I should also mention that I fucking love this album. Gets better every time.
  2. This is such a weird playoffs year. No clear-cut presidents trophy team (I mean the Rangers won it, but not by any level of domination), several teams barely winning any of the last few games, the Columbus fucking Blue Jackets going 10-0-1 at the end of the season when finally healthy, and several teams with 93+ points who won't make the playoffs (though that can be attributed to more teams being extra shitty this year). I really don't know who I'm rooting for this year. As a Leafs fan, I still don't like the Sens, fucking hate the Bruins, and want to see the Habs crash and burn (thought I do love Price and Subban). Maybe Calgary? The Blues? Islanders are a good turnaround story. In some ways, I'd probably most like to see the Capitals and Blues make it to the finals, since both teams are such chokers, and it would be nice to have a team win the cup for the first time. Though a Lightning-Predators final would be pretty tremendously terrible for the league...
  3. This sounds more like something Father John Misty might do.... Seriously, this will be a tough sell. Interesting idea, but I guarantee nobody listens to side P.
  4. Did you guys see that the amount of cassettes in this run doubled just as they were about to sell out? Now a run of 350 instead of 175. Combined popularity of cassettes and ED? http://www.orchidtapes.bigcartel.com/product/elvis-depressedly-new-alhambra-cassette-pre-sale
  5. I tried. I really did. But a combination of eBay's fuckery and the fact that 'Alicia' disabled combined shipping meant that I couldn't 'commit to buy' and they wouldn't disappear unless I put a credit card in.
  6. I stumbled upon this series of tube headphone amps by Bravo Audio - http://www.bravoaudio.com They have 3 different tube headphone amps available, all for under $100. I know that will likely mean that in some ways, you get what you pay for, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with these? Based on taking a look or experience, are these worth the time (mostly to leave at work with Grado SR125 or Monoprice 8323)? Or should I just spend a few more dollars on a Schiit? http://www.amazon.com/Bravo-AUDIO-Valve-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B00APSUPLG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1428498195&sr=1-2&keywords=bravo+audio+v2 http://www.amazon.com/BRAVO-Audio-V1-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B00A2QKTLW/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1428498195&sr=1-4&keywords=bravo+audio+v2
  7. I was suggesting properly recorded, though looking back at my original post, I never suggested such. If you include shitty bar bands, the numbers are considerably skewed. And if you include wedding bands, it's probably fucking 'I Gotta Feeling'...
  8. For the Canucks: https://www.facebook.com/notes/record-store-day-canada/record-store-day-canada-special-releases-list/905598722795961?fref=nf if it doesn't work, just go here: https://www.facebook.com/RecordStoreDayCanada?fref=ts Record Store Day Canada's list of titles that go directly through Canadian distributors. There are a lot of US titles missing here (namely Deja), though I surmise many of them might make their way to stores through different channels. I'm a bit bummed not to see the Hold Steady on that list - mostly because I figured it was a large pressing and I could get one without hassle, but maybe not if they're not crossing the border. I know this list may change, but it's a good starter to see what will be available in Canada for sure... Edit: tried to fix the link.
  9. I was having a discussion with some friends about songs written after 1980 that have been covered the most times in a non-novelty context (so basically, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes don't count). There are tons of songs from the 50s, 60s, 70s (not to mention all kinds of standards from before that) that have been covered countless times, but I feel like songs from the 80s forward are covered less frequently in a serious context. But here is my thought for most covered song: Naive Melody (This Must Be the Place) by Talking Heads Other ideas?
  10. Thanks everyone. I am going to have to look for some of these - seems like most are still in print, so hopefully not so hard. Think I might start with Another Thought. I really like World of Echo, but it's also a bit of a weird one to sit through the whole album at one time.
  11. Sorry to resuscitate an old thread, but I've recently become quite interested in Arthur Russell's music. Heard what I believed to be Another Thought in a record store recently, and subsequently listened to World of Echo. The music is pretty amazing and unique, and I'm thinking I'll be exploring more. But I'm not exactly sure what album(s) to begin with - what's my first AR album? I know that there are quite a few compilations, and I don't know that I know enough about his music. Any guidance is appreciated!
  12. My speakers are on a different wall from where my turntable is, and probably are over 35 ft of wire away from the amp. Before doing this I tested the speakers with 6 foot cables and I really didn't notice any sound difference (I have just above entry level everything - see post your setup thread). I suppose with higher end stuff you might start to notice a difference with sound quality. I also have a kid at home so I hid the cable with something called Cordmate which I found at Home Depot and hid the cables from exposure as they went over a doorframe.
  13. Can I try? I was gonna find a variety, but a lot of websites are blocked at work, so I couldn't get much else...
  14. So I finally finished putting together my setup. It has taken a few months of scouring second-hand stores and sites, and figuring out what I wanted and needed, and what worked in my space. What I had and kept: JVC QL-F4 direct drive turntable NAD PP3i Phono Preamp What I picked up (and price in CDN) NAD C326BEE Amp ($325 used) Grado Gold 1 Cartridge ($225 new) Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 speakers ($230 used) Apple Airport Express [newest version] ($75 refurbished from apple) Cambridge Audio DacMagic ($220 used) Grado SR125 headphones ($60 used) I'm pretty happy with this for now. I think if I had a better opportunity for layout, I would upgrade a few things, but space is sort of limited (hence the speaker wires going 30 feet over the ridge of the doorframe to the other wall). If we can ever afford to not have a tenant in the basement, I'd have a lot more flexibility for setup and speaker placement.
  15. Damn, nice garage. Mine mostly has a squirrel infestation, hockey gear, water-logged drywall, and bicycles. But yours inspires me. Maybe I should kick out the squirrels and replace with a Clearaudio TT...
  16. For those of use reminiscing about early 2000s Toronto-area punk bands, I'm not sure if you've seen this website, which I stumbled upon last night (and has caused major nostalgia). I was a bit more of a ska kid, but I'm pretty sure I saw a large handful of these bands live, or listened to them on mp3.com or wherever else you could share music circa 2001. https://905bands.wordpress.com/ (P.S., for those of you who don't know what the 905 is, it's the area code for suburbs around Toronto, north, east, west, and southwest of Toronto. Alexisonfire, Moneen, Flatliners, Tokyo Police Club, Attack in Black, plus a ton more bands came from the 905 area)
  17. Thanks. Gave this a try. -21% for VAT, and free shipping to Canada, though even at 157 Euros, not cheap...
  18. That was in my router's advanced settings, not the settings for the AE. I lowered it to 25 even and it worked even better. Google your router's brand and find out how to change it.
  19. I also just got my Airport Express today. And I set it up (analog so far - just finishing a transaction for a Cambridge DacMagic secondhand), and I set it up as the instructions described, and I got the choppiest playback from my computer. I had some success from my phone, but I couldn't play anything from iTunes. And I have a newish MacBook Pro, a very decent internet speed, and a decent router (Linksys). So I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was wrong. Music would barely play - one second on, one second off. So I did a bunch of research. And basically, in a nutshell, what I found out was that I could change the beacon interval settings (advanced router settings) from 100 to 50 (or even less), and that seemed to do the trick. Playback is pretty solid right now, sound quality is about what I expected at this point(I'm excited to hear it through a DAC). Just thought I'd share this in case it's something you (or others) might need to do.
  20. I'm curious about this too. Rapor was okay, but not as enjoyable as You Are All I See. Speaking of which, does anyone have an extra copy of You Are All I See they'd be willing to part with? Thought I was getting a copy from Amazon a couple of years ago, but it never showed up...
  21. Okay, obviously not really, but some somewhat relevant questions here: What's the most expensive setup you've heard? What were the components? Did you notice the level of difference between your own setup and what you heard?
  22. I think the idea would be that I would make one and post it at a certain point in time (with advance notice) to be kind of a numerical order of posting, and then while you're waiting for 45 minutes in line to pay, you can indicate that you've picked up a copy. You wouldn't indicate that you have one until it's in your hands. And because the spreadsheet is live, you would see if someone else is fulfilling. I mean the obvious other option is to connect with a few other people on the board and work out deals (which would prove more substantive as far as your return), but I thought this could be a way of looking for regional, specific, unique one-off records.
  23. He has to pay for his Record Flipper subscription somehow...
