  1. I made something like this about a month ago as a template and posted in the other RSD thread. Take a look (I'm pasting from my previous post below) and let me know if it's worth setting this up for real: Hey folks, I was just thinking about how there are a lot of good people on this board who will be genuinely seeking out albums for their own collections and listening pleasure. And I know that sometimes there are more copies of certain albums in some places more than others. I was trying to find a fair and beneficial way of setting up a system so that VCers can help other VCers out on RSD without having to resort to inflated Discogs or Ebay prices. So I decided to have some fun with Google Forms. Right now I've just sort of made a sample template. I would adjust this a little bit based on feedback and perhaps some other factors (input is gladly accepted). Basically, there would be two steps: First, a VC member can use the form to input a bit of information (no credit cards necessary...) with their username plus the desired album, and whether it is a regional release (we will likely wait for the official list to actually enter information). Then, 48 hours before actual RSD (which is like 25 hours from Australian RSD), a spreadsheet with all of the entries would appear. It looks and feels just like an Excel Spreadsheet, except that anyone with the link (as in it will only be shared with members interested - will have to figure out a good way to share the link) can respond and purchase a copy of a desired item for another member, indicating this on the spreadsheet. Because Google Spreadsheets update in real time, other users could see that a copy has been purchased (and wouldn't accidentally be stuck with a record for someone else). Here are the links to my samples. Feel free to use the form for fun, but know that this is just a sample. I'd love to hear feedback on how and/or if this might work, and then we can make a real one: Form: https://docs.google....?usp=send_form Spreadsheet: https://docs.google....dit?usp=sharing (note: you'll find that the content entered via the form is un-editable. This is intentional.)
  2. For those who have never been to a show at Massey Hall, I can safely say that there's some kind of magic in the venue. I've seen at least a dozen shows there, and it has some of the most amazing acoustics (not necessarily from a technical standpoint, but perhaps from the almost accidental reverb found in old opera houses). The seats in the upper section are among the most uncomfortable I've ever sat in (and are for anyone over 5'7), but I will always sacrifice comfort to go to a show at Massey. I've seen Wilco, Bon Iver, Josh Ritter, and Hayden multiple times, but for each of them, their absolute best show for me was at Massey Hall. I think there have been quite a few other live albums recorded there...have to look in on that.
  3. Interesting you say this. These were the MoFis I've been eying for the longest time. I have copies of all of these (mostly Canadian presses) that I've owned since I was a teenager, and some are played right out. I know these would sound better than my worn out copies, but I guess I'm a little disappointed to hear that they won't really blow me away (though I'm curious to hear Get Happy over 2LPs, as that one stretched some serious side time limits). My Aim Is True is all time top 5 for me, so I may still get the MoFi at some point...
  4. Closet Monster! There's a band name I haven't heard in the longest time. I used to go to punk shows in Toronto all the time circa 1999-2002, and they were pretty regularly around.
  5. My son is really into records too (he's almost 2). I let him pick the record from the shelf (he's too short to put it on the TT) and then he likes watching it spin. He usually picks random records, and it's always fun to see what he ends up with.
  6. This is, to me, exactly the right attitude to take with regard to releasing/promoting music in 2015. Maybe not for everyone, but in a lot of ways, for the small-medium indie bands, the combination of not aggressively going after leaks, keeping LP prices low, and being active and very positive on social media, are all great PR for an artist and label. My respect-o-meter just shot way up for Asthmatic Kitty.
  7. Elvis Costello Live at the El Mocambo (which was sort of an 'official' boot in that it was a bootleg later released on CD by Ryko) has always been one of my favourites, partly because it was one of my first records when I was 15, and also because it's pretty perfect - the Attractions had just joined him and they play through tracks from the first two albums with such energy. Wilco - Kicking Television Live in Chicago is pretty great. Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense is a classic, but in some ways, I need the visuals too. Neko Case - The Tigers Have Spoken.... A recent one that I absolutely love is Jason Isbell's Live From Alabama, which takes all of his best Drive By Truckers songs, plus the live versions of a lot of his studio songs are way better (especially Alabama Pines).
  8. No I know that we'd get less, but at the same time, I suppose it feels like we'll get way less proportionally. Maybe just harbouring resentment towards our ridiculous shipping prices and shitty dollar...
  9. Balls. And pretty much par for the course 'round here...
  10. For real. I've been looking for these at normal prices too. I feel like a year ago you could get them for around $20 and then suddenly you couldn't...
  11. Quick question for those who have a digital scale/stylus force gauge or whatever they're called: the $20 scale on Amazon is $30+ on the Canadian site, so I've looked around a bit for something a bit cheaper. This one is available on eBay: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/NEW-Vesion-Professional-LP-Digital-Turntable-Stylus-Force-Scale-Gauge-MC-MM-dzr-/351077969757?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51bde0af5d ($11.50 US/ $15 CAD) Anyone have this particular one, or would anyone see a reason why this one would be noticeably inferior to any others? I'm guessing a scale is a scale to most extents (unless your system starts to cost more than my house...)
  12. I had a Kenwood receiver with phono in. Was from the early 90s I think. The phono in was pretty lousy. Especially compared to my NAD phono preamp. And when I replaced the receiver, huge change in sound.
  13. That's kind of where I'm at. I feel like they're liquidating to cover baseline - I know how hard and expensive it is to run a label. Think I'm just gonna suck it up not worry about it. Relatedly, some great albums/bands on this label, some of which I bought with minimal listens: Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet - Savvy Show Stoppers (80s Toronto instrumental surf-rock band) Mother's Children - Lemon - power pop Needles//Pins - 12:34 - catchy pop punk and more that I still have to get through.
  14. So I just got my order in. I ordered 7 LPs (and even though I live a 5 minute drive from where they shipped it, shipping was $25...), and I received 6 - two were oversold and they replaced one of them (with a record I actually wanted - Needles//Pins - 12:34). But I have an ethical question for y'all: I paid for 7 LPs, as cheap as they might have been, I received one less record than I paid for, which would have been $5 + an extra $3 for shipping. Knowing that this record label is folding, is it worth asking/arguing for that money back? Is that too petty or worth arguing?
  15. Yup, they're pretty terrible. Partly because in spite of having a professional basketball and baseball team, people really really care about the Leafs (myself included). And so there's neverending scrutiny. It's brutal. In some ways, the biggest reason Kessel has lasted so long is that he so rarely talks to the media. It doesn't help that the team has probably been among the worst overall in the cap era (I would say that the Oilers are worse but they at least had a cup final run). Basically, unless the Leafs can get a universally beloved player like Gilmour or Sundin, any leader (or highly played star) will be under an unforgiving microscope.
  16. You may well have a repress or unofficial copy, but if one of the originals (from 1977, before they got booted off the label), then yes, very valuable: http://www.nme.com/news/sex-pistols/64239
  17. Somewhere between this: This: or possibly this:
  18. This thread has been so much more entertaining than NHL trade deadline day.
  19. Please, we all know that if you need copies, all you have to do is ask the Record Flipper: https://twitter.com/mr_ltd_edition
  20. Three month probationary period before posting in Brand New thread. Six months if RSD Brand New thread.
  21. Seriously...Gudas is pretty good - maybe 5th or 6th defenseman, but still NHL-ready. Plus a 1st and 3rd? Philly won that one...
  22. I put an order through with Mammoth Cave recently. It totally sucks that they're closing up shop - sucks when any small independent record label has to close. I put through an order of a bunch of stuff - prices were pretty amazing! Hopefully my order goes through!
