  1. I have never been too big a fan of these guys, but have given each of their albums a listen. I know they went for a big change in sound on this one, a very conscious shift away from just about everything in their sound that made them big, and honestly, I didn't care so much that. But now I've been reading about how they think their old way of dressing, and their sound, and their band name are all dumb and they regret them all. That kind of thing pisses me off. It's basically like saying 'if you liked our old stuff, fuck you because we think you're an idiot for liking it, check out how we ripped off Coldplay'. They're obviously not the first band to change their sound, and I mean, I was a big ska fan in the late 90s, wherein by the time 2000 hit, they all turned into punk or rock bands with horns, disavowing their ska past. it bothered me then, but this is a much bigger scale. This is a band that easily plays to 20,000 people, many of whom are very casual music fans who may only go to one concert this year hoping to see Little Lion Man, but won't get to hear anything other than synthesizers. I have pretty much lost all respect for them as musicians, not for their transformation, but for how they've done it so dramatically while writing off their ascent to fame.
  2. I'm gonna ask that you don't use that word any more. No need to use it when there are so many less offensive cusses.
  3. It's funny how in the 90s there wasn't too obvious a line between the commercial Canadian stuff and the indie stuff, because all of it was fighting for exposure and airtime. I don't think that OLP would necessarily be lumped in with all the same other bands we've been mentioning, but I mean, they were on a major label just like Transistor Sound and Lighting, the Rheostatics, and Sloan (they had a major attached to them, right? Or was it all murderecords?). Also, growing up, I don't think there was really a way to notice which bands were more independent than others, especially the way it feels now. I listened to Clumsy recently, and other than the nostalgic factor, it doesn't feel any more produced than most of the music of the era (their later albums sounded more polished and plain), and it definitely holds up.
  4. Barenaked Ladies are definitely worth the mention, even if there legacy is mostly campy as hell. They played this benefit in Toronto recently hosted by Hayden (for a school for students with complex needs), and I have to say, they were amazing (even without Steven Page). They are just one of those bands that it's easy to hate, but then when you think about it, you really can't hate at all. They don't fit in the CanRock scene as traditionally as most of the bands mentioned, but I think they're definitely on topic. And probably have a fairly dedicated fanbase who would jump at the chance to own their first 2 or 3 albums on vinyl.
  5. I've noticed that too. Never really understood it... Great list of bands. Haven't thought about some of them for a while.... I would pay too much money for nc17, self=title, or Maybe It's Me by treble charger on vinyl. If I didn't have to do any work regarding licensing, ordering or selling them, I would totally start a record label and release all this stuff. Limited to like 12 copies each or so, because that's about the extent of the interest unfortunately.
  6. I picked up Weeping Tile off Discogs for under $15 last year I think. Lightweight blue vinyl. I think I'll have to get that Limblifter record. Liked it a lot back in the day! My Hayden LP collection is almost complete - just got Moving Careful 10" recently. I don't really collect 7"s so I only have one of his. And yeah I love Joel Plaskett. The new album is fun, not his best but totally solid. Is it out on vinyl or just CD? I really love the Lowest of the Low album, own it on CD but not vinyl yet. I always hated the production on it. It sounds like they ran bad acoustic guitar pickups into the soundboard directly. There's no substance to the sound on the album.
  7. I can't believe I actually have 0 points in the bracket. None. Zero. I tried to be ambitious and root for some underdogs/the teams I didn't want to win but thought just might, and meanwhile, unless Detroit and Washington win, I might just win worst bracket chooser of all time. Or in other words, so bad that next year, y'all should look at my bracket to figure out what not to do.
  8. I feel like there's not nearly enough love for 1990s Canadian music on vinyl. And so I'm starting this thread for the few of us on here to try to appreciate what, if at all, is currently pressed from this era. I was an avid radio-listening, MuchMusic-watching kid in the mid-late 90s, and have a serious soft spot for a lot of the music from the era. But so little of it is available on vinyl (unless it came from Sloan's murderecords, and even then, most of that is hard to find). Some records that I own/hope to own from this era: Lowest of the Low - Shakespeare My Butt (rerelease) Weeping Tile - Cold Snap (Sarah Harmer's old band - I love this one) Hayden - Everything I Long For Hayden - The Closer I get (rerelease) Rheostatics - Whale Music (rerelease) Sloan - One Chord to Another (someday I will own this - though I've heard they're working on a reissue?) Local Rabbits - Kombinator Change of Heart - 82-97 (recent compilation, but easily the worst mastered recorded I've heard in a long time) There is a bunch more out there, but so much I wish I had on vinyl, like early treble charger, Thrush Hermit, and probably some other bands I feel a bit nostalgic for, like I Mother Earth, Moist, etc. Anyone else have some good 90s Canadian vinyl?
  9. That would be okay, but I feel like it would be more awesome if there were a library for books. There are so many things I want to read, but I'm just never willing to pay the bookogs.com prices for some of them.
  10. In case anyone is thinking of picking up a Denon DL-110 (entry level MC), apparently, the prices on it are being hiked at the end of this week (already have jumped in US, but for some reason, quite cheap in Canada) from $159 (CAD) to $399 (CAD). $159 at amazon.ca http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000I1YLG0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AGNWQP078F8KV I'm guessing internationally, you should be able to get one from here without crazy shipping prices, hopefully. Has anyone had any experience with this cart? I've heard good things...
  11. Seems like Vinyl-Digital has a couple of copies in? Price is a bit high, but without VAT for non EU, and under $18 shipping, it's about $240 US. Still a lot, but not as much as it's been going for: http://www.vinyl-digital.com/en/Rock-Indie/Red-House-Painters-RSD-2015-Release.html?listtype=search&searchparam=red%20house%20painters
  12. That's fair. I think they're one of those bands that you have to get into at the right moment or part of your life. They're amazing, but also not the most technically talented or musically original per se - plus their sound changed quite a bit over their career. My all time favourite band is the Clash, and while I think they're amazing, I have had long discussions with people who can't get into them and I totally get it. I don't agree, but I see where they're coming from.
  13. I listened to the Spotify stream of Carnegie Hall and was kind of surprised at just how compelling he is solo. I think I've liked most of his music less and less since his first few solo albums, and maybe it's just that I think he's more interesting with a sparser sound. A lot of his newer songs I prefer in this solo setting. Unrelated to the box, since this is a Pax-Am thread, I have a question/favour, and was hoping someone could help me out. Years ago I heard the versions of Now That You're Gone and If I'm a Stranger from the 7 inch (both are stripped down and sparser than on Cold Roses), but they were really shitty quality rips of the vinyl. I haven't been able to find any half-decent vinyl tips of that one, and am wondering if anyone has some decent quality digital files, or knows where to find them. The 7' has been selling for quite a lot lately so I don't think buying a copy is an option for me right now. Any leads on digital files appreciated!
  14. I'm very curious to hear this. I really love Insignificance and some of his other more pop-oriented stuff. Not as into the more experimental side, but there's no doubt just how talented he is.
  15. Seeing them a couple of years ago at Riot Fest Toronto was one of my favourite live shows ever, in part because it was such a surreal moment and wonderful crowd. I don't think I own any of their albums on vinyl so I'm super excited about this! And if only Westerberg's Stereo/Mono would be pressed on vinyl...
  16. So I got one of the Bravo headphone amps in a deal with a guy where I was buying a Schiit Modi, and he threw in the Bravo V1 for $30 (CAD)/$25US. It's not bad at all, but honestly, like you guys predicted, I kind of just want to get a Schiit Magni now. I don't feel like the Bravo was a waste per se, and all of this is going to be for my secondary/work computer, but I think the Magni will make more sense in what I'm looking for.
  17. Great answers, all of you! Puts a lot of the rereleases in perspective. I know I've picked up some that are quite amazing, while other just plain don't sound that good. One thing I've seen recommended before if you're looking for discussions on specific pressings is the forum at Steve Hoffman's site. A lot of serious audiophiles there that can likely steer you towards the correct pressings, if they haven't already. Also, awesome on the Joni Mitchel collection. My wife is a huge fan and we have most of the albums up until Hejira. We're on our second copy of Hissing of Summer Lawns, because that's her favourite (and is getting right up there with me). We have a Canadian pressing that sounds pretty good, except that it was quite well-loved when we got it. That being said, other than maybe Blue and Court and Spark, I've seen most of Joni's albums for quite good prices (usually $5-10 for VG+).
  18. Yeah, it's sometimes even more than that. They wait until 5 days after the billing cycle, which I believe starts on the 5th of each month. I think the idea being that technically, I could buy the dude's $100K Brand New record, and never pay for it, so unless the seller pays the fees on the item, it doesn't count as a sale. Any time I've had a non-paying buyer, the item no longer counts as sold.
  19. I'm in. I work as a resource teacher supporting other teachers with all things assistive technology. I've gone almost completely Google Apps at work, and even with my personal stuff. It's hard to imagine ever really going back to Microsoft Office again, other than a few specific uses.
  20. I've decided for sure I'm going to sell my set. Still sealed. Basically at my cost, which was overpriced to begin with. $270US including shipping and Paypal fees to anywhere in US, $260 to Canada. Local pickup in Toronto for $280 Canadian. Outside of Canada/US, shipping will likely be at least $60 (for untracked surface mail), so let me know only if you're really serious about paying for that. Edit: some of my math a bit wrong. Prices adjusted.
  21. Nah, they have plenty of variants available as it is. We don't need more...
