  1. see this stuff is fascinating too me... Are they really being "punished" or is that what our "christian american outlook" dictates. I wonder if sometimes we project this idea of "punishment for sins" because it is so cultural for us... I'm not saying no films bring this up, but usually the ones that do bring it up in a religious context... I think the horror icons prey on fear...the kids only get killed when they become afraid, but the smart ones usually survive...usually the strong woman who has made intelligent and responsible decisions... Also, look at Martyrs for the idea that women are stronger than men and always have been...thats why they are always used as the realistic heroines in our fiction... Most superhero hero's are fantasy male projections that for the most part cannot become a reality Most female horror heroes are so because they can possess the same qualities that we can achieve in every day life... Or maybe I am just talking out of my asshole...haha
  2. Integrated Language Arts Major here...(basically the same thing, but I am a licensed teacher) I'm trying to think of which ones are misogynist. I guess you could say Friday The 13th is to some extent because a lot of those films are about the "boobies" and "violence" but for the most part I feel like a lot of those films are pretty progressive. Take for example the Nightmare On Elm Street films...Heather Lagencamp as Nancy is my favorite female protagonist of all time. She overcomes Freddy who is basically the epitome of violence, sex and the destruction of innocence (whether you take the stance that he is a child killer or a child molester I feel that it can be used in the same context.) Also the second Nightmare on Elm Street is pretty interesting in terms of gay culture...I mean if you put on a different lens the whole film is about the main character Mark coming to terms with the fact that he is gay. Even the third fourth and fifth (even though the fifth one is absolutely horrible) have strong female leads... Generally I think horror really takes these "taboo" subjects and makes them accessible to the mainstream...the subtext is the most interesting part... Even the first Sleepaway Camp....That is one of my favorite horror films because it is all about gender roles and that you cannot change who you are inside...Just because your outside says you are a girl, it doesn't mean you are one...This is something that we are able to discuss now but was completely off the table when the film was made in 1983 I am so happy to see so many other feminists on this board...it gives me so much hope for the world
  3. That is so interesting especially because the girl actually dies in the original so there is no female protagonist overcoming her attacker, I actually found that film more disturbing than ISOYG because the humiliation was so intense and there was really no chance for her or her friend to get retribution. I know because of the ending that she is "avenged" so to speak but she is still dead. I find that to be more bleak. At least in ISOYG she lived through it. Yes it was tragic, but she overcame her surroundings and survived. I love both of the original films more than their remakes, but I enjoyed the LHOTL remake a lot in spite of the ending with the microwave...I thought that was a little bit hammy...and this is going to sound strange but I was a little disappointed that sara paxton survived the whole thing...I felt like it took some of the power away from the story....
  4. I absolutely agree in terms of the strong female protagonist, and I totally see your thoughts on ISOYG, but again I would argue that the focus on her pain and nudity is the whole point....I didn't really like the remake because I felt it was a little watered down and not as poignant as the original Assuming you have seen it...how do you feel about the original Last House On The Left?
  5. Wow man, as a feminist myself, I never really thought of it that way...I might have to take another look at it and see if it holds up for me... Honestly I think the brutal rape is so long for the reason that it makes you sick. The realism of it really makes you disgusted with people who would do something like that to someone else. Ultimately I think it came from a time when misogyny was rampant and men were getting away with rape on a more frequent basis because of it. I think this is the directors response to that. I mean I completely see your argument, but if he wanted to make a snuff film where a woman gets raped why would he bother with the revenge scenes and why would he make them so grotesque...I mean I am not squeemish at all but the scene where she cuts the guys dick off in the bathtub is intense. Ultimately the audience sides with Jennifer in the end... So anyway...I feel the point is to rub your face in it so much that there is no way anyone can justify the behavior...
  6. It is not even close to Irreversable...just fast forward through the animal stuff cause it really is a fantastic film.. Also, you should watch the original ISOYG as well because other than the 40 minute long rape scene it is a great film...so ahead of its time... I can't even think of a film that has "bothered" me in terms of violence...I Stand Alone was pretty rough (same director as Irreversable)...Martyrs really stayed with me but I don't think I am alone in that...
  7. Real life animal killing is inexcusable...thats the only thing I absolutely hate about Cannibal Holocaust...I always skip the part where they kill the turtle... The meaning behind that film is so fucking good that I can't just write it off... My love of cinema and veganism are in direct conflict with that one.... Also, I don't know if anyone is interested but James Rolfe (The Angry Video Game Nerd) is doing his annual Monster Madness reviews on cinemassacre.com...He does a review a day of horror films for the whole month of October. Yesterday he did Cabin in the Woods and today is the Silent German classic Haxan (both are fantastic films)
  8. Nothing wrong with that broski!! I've seen Salo 3 times and Cannibal Holocaust is one of my favorite horror flicks...I think more or less it is about the subtext...cause sex in a horror movie, especially horror films like that, generally are symbolic
  9. Pumped for this!! Didn't get on VC yesterday so I will watch Stitches and Tapes tonight to make up!!
  10. Amazing dude, one of my favorites off of that album...
  11. I think this movie is a good idea...we definitely need some kind of mainstream film to provoke discussions about race and identity...even if it is not the best movie, at least it is making an effort to get people talking
  12. Alright...so this is why I never look on ebay... So there is a test press of The Wonder Years - The Upsides up and I am frantically trying to figure out what I can sell so that I can afford this damn thing...I'm usually not much of a Test Press guy...but this is my favorite album (I know...how cliche) and this is the first time I have seen one in a long long time... Help me out FS 7" Title Fight - Missed Flexi 7" - $40 12" You Me And Everyone We Know - Some Things Don't Wash Out - Test Press - $60 SOLD! Turnover - Magnolia - Olive Green/Oxblood/Aqua - $20 Man Overboard - The Human Highlight Reel - Red - 1/300 - $15 Man Overboard - Man Overboard - Coke Bottle Clear - $25 Prices are off of the top of my head so feel free to negotiate...just keep in mind that I am really attached to these records too...I would love to bundle some together and give better prices...I only have a few mailers because I wasn't really prepared for this but I always package well and will make sure your stuff is packed up right even if it isn't in a typical "mailer" Also, all prices are PPD... Thanks guys...hope to hear from you
  13. I am just stoked we are getting another Pink Floyd album Just to toss in my two cents...I think the best parts of Floyd are Wright and Gilmour...Waters had some cool concepts lyrically but it was Gilmour and Wright that brought them to life For instance...imagine shine on you crazy diamond without those four notes on the intro ( you know what I'm talking about) Imagine The Wall without Comfortably Numb... Imagine Dark Side Of The Moon without On The Run...or The Great Gig In The Sky... You guys give Roger Waters waaay too much credit...I mean look at The Final Cut...probably my least favorite of the Floyd albums because it was a Waters vanity project...with the exception of When the Tigers Broke Free...but I count that as being a part of The Wall since it was in the movie...and should have been on the album
  14. Congrats Man!! Just sharing a few menu items...I made this pumpkin baked Ziti with carmelized onions the other night and it was KILLER!! If you do not have a copy of the Veganomicon cookbook yet I highly highly recommend it...You will never need another vegan cookbook http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=433410 The Cashew Ricotta was very easy to make, I didn't make my own breadcrumbs though... Also, one of my wifes favorite meals lately has been sauteed veggies (Broccoli, carrots, green beans and snap peas) with white rice and ramen noodles...we don't use the salt packet for the noodles cause that is not vegan...but the noodles are surprisingly Great stuff!! I think I am going to make Chili this weekend...
  15. Holy shit I had no idea...I got mine on clearance at hot topic for like $5...
  16. I cannot back this statement enough, If you don't have Age Isn't Ours...you need to buy it now... This record is going to be amazing...
  17. They put the new song up on Brooklyn Vegan http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2014/09/the_world_is_a_4.html Not really feeling it The spoken word thing is cool and normally I love stuff like that...I just feel like this dude is pretty lame. All of the stuff in this song is really cliche and I just feel like he is trying waaaay too hard to come off as poetic. I'm going to try it again though...I want to like this...
  18. You are crazy man! that Lee Corey Oswald record is insanely good... 19. Me Three Totally in for the hallowshityourpantsscaryween fest!!!!
  20. Fuck yeah man, chickpea salad is the shit! This is the recipe I use http://thesimpleveganista.blogspot.com/2012/10/chickpea-salad.html I use jalapeno mustard instead of Dijon but I highly suggest the hummus instead of the Veganaise.... I don't know about the pickle and onion though...might have to try those and see... Tonight I made Gardenburgers (with tomato, pickles, kale, jalapenos) with roasted potatoes (with onions and red peppers) and roasted beets...never tried the roasted beets before but I loved them...unfortunately the wife did not... If anyone is looking for a fun new recipe to try, I highly suggest sweet potato quinoa burgers....really really good stuff!
  21. What the fuck is wrong with you guys...just chill the fuck out and enjoy the tunes... goddamn....
  22. "I left my god with confidence cause I never heard him speak." I love that line...
