yeah, im referring to the official last.fm app, which runs in the background and scrobbles plays in itunes, also will scrobble ipod plays by reading tracks that have had play counts updated, and therefore, with a simple script that updates itunes play counts, it will scrobble those plays as well

tl;dr but what i do is use an AppleScript (i think its from dougscripts but just google it) that updates the itunes play count and then if you have last.fm running it will scrobble it automatically at some point downstream (and it keeps track of play counts, which is something i like, as a complete nerd - not just a record nerd)
