In theory ETR would have licensed right to the art, so making special covers may be accounted for. Also Patrick does actual screen printing which is labor intensive and involves a more involved process, thus more expensive, in theory. Otherwise I've missed the unlicensed/consented stuff. I brought it up here because I was afraid of how tight Disney's grip would be on their ip, also I'm beginning to work with musicians to make art for releases so I'm reevaluating the apathy I've paid any previous things like this. If you look elsewhere, I've tried to bring up this conversation elsewhere in regards to ethics, but it tends not to go anywhere.

Forgetting your insults, it could actually be beneficial to contact the musical artists. With the O' Brother - Garden Window jacket the band actually wanted jackets for their own copies of the record. I think part of the discussion is keeping in care for Andrew's well-being as well. I'd hate to see him get in trouble with a large entity with money to fight him with.

Just had someone steal a friend's Hannibal illustration for iphone covers today. It is definitely a bummer when artists aren't involved in the use of their work. Of course that's been taken down now. She can't monetize it herself, but did it for love of the show and the exposure NBC was giving artists for a bit. Definitely a complicated issue, that's why it's worth discussing and asking permission. You have to look from the artist perspective when doing things like this, I feel. If Whalen isn't okay with the use of his image, you can pm me Andrew. I could do a simple illustration similar to what someone suggested (alla lamp for Aladin, Rose for Beaut & Beast). I'd be willing to do it for the community, but would otherwise want to be uncredited. Could be fun, and gets the job done without stepping on any feet, I feel.

Decibully is so sadly underrated. Their vocalist has such a great voice. Also, crazy deal on the Cult of Luna. Didn't notice how cheap it was since I already own a copy.

Picked up Mass Effect 3 to see why everybody hated the ending, and to see what the devs did to try to make up for it in dlc. Also picked up Borderlands. Decent time to catch up on 360 titles while I wait for the next gen to come down.

If there's one thing that was beaten into me the last year of university, it is the power of silhouette poses. Wrestling moves would be great for that iconic kind of iconic thing. If you knew of any lower level wrestling or mma events you could attend, that would be an awesome place to do some gesture drawings. I may have to look into that myself. A friend of mine, Aaron Hollander, posted this great sketch of Jiu Jitsu the other day. Brilliant stuff.

The pencil tool is a great thing in illustrator. It takes a little getting used to, but if you have a tablet it gives complete control for drawing the shapes you need.

Of course the characters are still owned by Disney. You can say the work is original but it still has unlicensed use of the property. Making a profit isn't really a factor when it comes to actively policing the brand, but I guess that's technically to protect trademark like what happened with the Black Flag logo kind of recently. I'm not an expert, but I know the general ideas as they relate to illustration. The topic just really interests me, plus Andrew and I can't be the first people to see a demand for custom record jackets. It leaves me wondering why it hasn't been taken on much before.

Do you have illustrator? Shouldn't be too difficult to either livetrace or redraw the beetle in the program. Also curious how this will go on. Disney's pretty big and tend to be protective of copyright. If this doesn't get hit with a C&D letter, I might have to start offering to do original illustrations for stuff. Hope it goes off without a legal snag.

That they had Om Live at Jerusalem made me cave. Wish I had done it earlier for the Mogwai. There's also Mono - Holy Ground for more great live post-rock; it's orchestrally backed too.

Been sleeping on this for too long despite so much love for the band.

I don't see any reason to take callouts seriously, for the most part. It's like with rappers, a game of perception. If you get past that silliness and realize you're not involved, it becomes a non-thing. You're not controlled by what you listen to, it just often times mirrors your own ideas or even just sense of sound aesthetic.

Hopefully that means it will actually be good. I wonder how if LouLou would have been better if Reed had just done it alone. He could probably be the table that Hetfield just couldn't truly embody.

Thread title def needs artists. I overlooked it until the Jason Moina thread someone else made. Very excited for his material. May go for Kozelek if funds look good closer to the end.
