do you feel the same way about the swastika flag?  Its just a symbol, right?

And those idiots that use it have the right to use it. I disagree with what it represents but the people who want to fly it should fly it. And those who oppose it will let them know. IMO all hate groups deserve to be exterminated, but it's their right to exist.

If people want to call the Gestapo and start rounding up people and symbols they don't like, go for it. Go after the religious symbols of Christians, Muslims and Jews as well. Go after song lyrics next. Then art. Then books. Let's just remove everything someone doesn't like, even though others may like them and want them. Then everyone will be happy and nobody will have a different viewpoint or opinion. We'll all be nice little clones of each other, just the way the Powers That Be want us.

Censorship at its finest.

This is a stupid terrible point.

First off, the swastica flag is a German Socialist Nazi party flag and ONLY has negative connotations to it (again the Confederacy means more)

Secondly, the Confederate flag has a part in American history, just because people THINK it is all about racism and slavery does not make it so.

Also, since when has slavery been equal to the genocide of the Jews (if we are comparing horrors of the flags)

my wife, who teaches cultural literacy/social studies, just posted this link on what materials, as educators in the classroom, at home, or out in the world, utilize what this site has gathered to educate everyone.

We may disagree on certain points but this is a great list. Indeed, critical thinking and discussion is needed. That's what we're doing now.

If some idiot wants to fly a Nazi flag or a Confederate flag, they should be able to. It should not be flown at a government building though. That's my take.

They're not the same flag....

The Confederate flag has historical connotations to it, but I understand why some don't want it.

Personally, I'm just sick of outside opinions from people that don't live here telling us what we should do. (i.e. people all over Twitter)

Uh...I'm not an idiot, dude. Of course they're different flags, that's why it says "or" in between them in the sentence I wrote. I only bring up the Nazi flag because it was mentioned before and is also offensive to a lot of people.

The point is, freedom of speech is freedom of speech. People can fly whatever flag they want...BUT flying a flag that represents oppression to a group of people over a government building is not ok.

Um, I'm not calling you an idiot, but putting both flags in the same sentence and insinuating they shouldn't be flown -i.e. what US Building would fly a Nazi flag? - you are comparing the two. If you weren't I apologize, there is no need to get hostile like usual.

Im not far from Charleston, I used to live there for years, have family that still lives there, so I visit often, and I love what Im seeing. I work in Pawleys Island which actually gets Charleston tv stations, and during the price is right, which is what I watch at lunch, they were showing the people gathering in Charleston talking about removing the flag, which I loved watching. I could listen to Dr. Rivers talk all day. Great seeing a community coming together to do the right thing.

You bait people with implications all the time and then act like you didn't try to get a rise out of someone when they respond to you with hostility. Even saying "like usual" after no need to get hostile is pretty much asking for hostility back.

Of course the nazi flag isn't flown at any government buildings in the U.S. The confederate flag is, and should not be. I don't think a comparison of the two is too out of the box...they're both offensive to large groups of people and neither belongs at a goverment building.

One is flown, the other isn't. Neither should be. Tough comparison to get? I don't think so.

1. - I do not "bait people all the time" I am hardly on this board, what do you even mean?

2. - "they respond to you with hostility" - Who is "they"?, you are the only one who is ever hostile to me, that is why I said what I said.

3. - I said "like usual" because of #2 and you are constantly hostile with others on the board that may post something that annoys you.

1)Any time I see you post in response to me, it's always trying to make it seem like I don't know what I'm talking about. No one else seemed to misunderstand what I said about two different flags that share many similarities. So I don't get why you couldn't understand the idea.

2)Well maybe it's just me then, not "they" but I'm hostile with you because of of reason 1, and because you seem to like talking down to me for some reason.

3)I don't know why everyone takes anything that I say contradictory to their point as being hostile. What do I have against anyone here? Nothing, everyone here is an anonymous internet person. The only person I feel any real amount of dislike toward is you, but only because of reasons 1 & 2. It seems like you just have an issue with me. Consider anything snarky that I say to end in a winky face if that helps you out.

And finally, I'm not even the first one to bring up the nazi flag. I was posting in response to what someone else said, so I'm not sure why I was singled out in the first place.

I don't really have a problem with you beyond the fact that you treat me like a dick, which is unappreciated. I also don't have a problem with anyone else.

Conclusion:

Flags. People have opinions about them.

Free speech. I'm for it.

Flying flags with misappropriated images that have been warped by the people who use them in current times to represent hate. Shouldn't be flown at goverment buildings in my opinion.

Because opinions. They're things people have. About flags. As I said above ;)

That's my only point. It is a valuable piece of history and southern pride but it is also a reminder of a treasonous act against America as well as how this state fired the first shot of the Civil War. It has no buisness on public taxpayer property period.

First of all, I am not a hostile person (I know - seems to be the phrase of the day right now) it is not my intention for you to keep thinking I am hostile towards you. I was just asking a question because I did not know what you meant originally. That is why I was questioning it, I had no ulterior motive to make you sound stupid or something. I was just continuing the conversation.

I harbor no ill will towards you but you seem to have it towards me. I think you above anyone else could understand that typed words can be misconstrued in their meaning and effect. I do not feel like I have talked down to you, again that is not my intention either. Also, really? I do not "treat you like a dick" come on...haha

Can you please share these "many similarities" between the Nazi flag and the Confederate flag?

not sure why the bickering. i'm pretty sure everyone here so far agrees that the confederate flag is undeserving of a place on a state capitol building.

on a side note: when people who share a hobby or like the same music can't even get along in an online vinyl forum, how can you expect people from all walks of life across the world to amicably resolve their differences and get along?

Alright, we're cool then...

Similarities:

The Nazi flag contains a symbol that was misappropriated and twisted to be a symbol of hate.

The Confederate flag itself is a symbol that has been misappropriated and twisted to be a symbol of hate.

Both are steeped in history and belong in a museum so that people can learn from mistakes made in the past, but do not have any place being flown at a government building.

This is because...

Both flags offend large groups of people.

So, 3 similarities may not seem like a huge number...but they're big similarities that mean quite a lot to a lot of people. I understand that many people see the confederate flag as a symbol of their heritage as a southerner and for what it meant to the people of the confederacy.

Many of these same people (not all) refuse to see it as the symbol of hatred and oppression that it has become, though. Too many people have committed hate crimes under that flag for it to be untarnished. Even the "mere fact" that it also represents treason against the country we live in as was mentioned by other users is a reason not to have it flown at government buildings.

Now that that is out of the way, let me show you how I'm misconstruing the things you said above:

Both of the bolded bits come off as quite condescending. I know it can happen to everyone, but keep it in mind. When you're having a discussion with someone, putting quotes around something online is often compared to using quote mark fingers around the words, which is annoying to the nth degree and comes off as very sarcastic.

As far as not treating someone like a dick, I meant it more as, you're being a condescending prick, but we're past that and I understand that I may have misinterpreted your words.

Just things to keep in mind. I'll try to read things you say through a different lens with less of my own emphasis on things.

Shut up, dick ;)

Nah, just kidding. But you see how we resolved our differences? We may not always share an opinion, but an open dialogue sure can fix a lot of things when both sides come prepared to listen.
