And those idiots that use it have the right to use it. I disagree with what it represents but the people who want to fly it should fly it. And those who oppose it will let them know. IMO all hate groups deserve to be exterminated, but it's their right to exist.

 

If people want to call the Gestapo and start rounding up people and symbols they don't like, go for it. Go after the religious symbols of Christians, Muslims and Jews as well. Go after song lyrics next. Then art. Then books. Let's just remove everything someone doesn't like, even though others may like them and want them. Then everyone will be happy and nobody will have a different viewpoint or opinion. We'll all be nice little clones of each other, just the way the Powers That Be want us.

This is a stupid terrible point.

First off, the swastica flag is a German Socialist Nazi party flag and ONLY has negative connotations to it (again the Confederacy means more)

Secondly, the Confederate flag has a part in American history, just because people THINK it is all about racism and slavery does not make it so.

Also, since when has slavery been equal to the genocide of the Jews (if we are comparing horrors of the flags)

the swastica was a symbol used long before the nazi's. highschools, colleges, it was very common back in the day.

The swastika is a positive symbol used in Hinduism & Buddhism. It didn't have a negative stigma until the nazis got ahold of it.

The original swastica spun the opposite way the Nazis took it and swapped it.

The Confederate flag has historical connotations to it, but I understand why some don't want it.

The point is, freedom of speech is freedom of speech. People can fly whatever flag they want...BUT flying a flag that represents oppression to a group of people over a government building is not ok.

Im not far from Charleston, I used to live there for years, have family that still lives there, so I visit often, and I love what Im seeing. I work in Pawleys Island which actually gets Charleston tv stations, and during the price is right, which is what I watch at lunch, they were showing the people gathering in Charleston talking about removing the flag, which I loved watching. I could listen to Dr. Rivers talk all day. Great seeing a community coming together to do the right thing.

You bait people with implications all the time and then act like you didn't try to get a rise out of someone when they respond to you with hostility. Even saying "like usual" after no need to get hostile is pretty much asking for hostility back.

Of course the nazi flag isn't flown at any government buildings in the U.S. The confederate flag is, and should not be. I don't think a comparison of the two is too out of the box...they're both offensive to large groups of people and neither belongs at a goverment building.

That's my only point. It is a valuable piece of history and southern pride but it is also a reminder of a treasonous act against America as well as how this state fired the first shot of the Civil War. It has no buisness on public taxpayer property period.

Similarities:

The Nazi flag contains a symbol that was misappropriated and twisted to be a symbol of hate.

The Confederate flag itself is a symbol that has been misappropriated and twisted to be a symbol of hate.

 

Both are steeped in history and belong in a museum so that people can learn from mistakes made in the past, but do not have any place being flown at a government building.

This is because...

 

Both flags offend large groups of people.

 

So, 3 similarities may not seem like a huge number...but they're big similarities that mean quite a lot to a lot of people. I understand that many people see the confederate flag as a symbol of their heritage as a southerner and for what it meant to the people of the confederacy.

Many of these same people (not all) refuse to see it as the symbol of hatred and oppression that it has become, though. Too many people have committed hate crimes under that flag for it to be untarnished. Even the "mere fact" that it also represents treason against the country we live in as was mentioned by other users is a reason not to have it flown at government buildings.

Both of the bolded bits come off as quite condescending. I know it can happen to everyone, but keep it in mind. When you're having a discussion with someone, putting quotes around something online is often compared to using quote mark fingers around the words, which is annoying to the nth degree and comes off as very sarcastic.

As far as not treating someone like a dick, I meant it more as, you're being a condescending prick, but we're past that and I understand that I may have misinterpreted your words.

Just things to keep in mind. I'll try to read things you say through a different lens with less of my own emphasis on things.
