thespungo
Hey guys -- About to embark on a big move out to our first house in the suburbs, need to start planning how I'm going to pack of my records. Have a fully-stocked Expedit with well over 500 records, any advice on how to safely pack a good sized collection? Recommend some good boxes to buy somewhere? Any other tips? Thanks guys! paranoidantroyd
My advice? Use the search function and read the other 50 threads created by assholes that don't know how to move records from one house to another. ronniegwilliams
white boxes like the ones you'd find from bags unlimited or amazon or whatever. when i moved to DC from Kansas, I had to use about 8 or 9 of those boxes, it sucked, they were heavy and I worried about them along the way since it was summer, but they're not awful to carry and they stack pretty well and make for good storage containers when you're all moved in
Team Avatar
i've moved twice and packed my records in i believe the standard uhaul box. Records fit perfectly in them, and the first time i moved i was very cautious with the number of records I put in. The second time though, I put two mailers on each side to act as extra cushioning and filled them pretty well. Without the records easily moving back and forth, they were snug and none were damaged. Granted, I only had to drive 20 minutes away the second time so I was a little less cautious. I think I needed like 7 boxes for all of my records, and I have close to 150? lps or more. i dunno. The Vool
I have plastic boxes in which records in mailer fit perfectly...the last time I moved (in March 15), I've put the records in mailers and then in tote bags. I used tote bags to not carry the huge boxes, but stored the records in the boxes only for the drive...
caninesapien
IKEA used to do these red/black plastic inserts for the Expedit shelves, like huge cube drawers. I used these last time I moved. They were kind of hefty but it felt like the records were protected more than just using cardboard.
Sad Heart
Uhaul box. Line it with mailers. Limit by weight. Use common sense. Easy. I've done that 4 or 5 times. One of them was from 2500 miles. They're records, not nukes. You'll be fine. thespungo
nancy_raygun
Just moved across the country a couple weeks ago. Gonna mirror what just about everyone else is saying - I used Uhaul boxes lined with padding, no more than 50 per box. They were heavy and a total pain, but there wasn't any damage. thespungo
Sad Heart
I can understand why everyone is always so concerned about moving with records, but it really isn't that bad. I moved 400+ LPs and they were absolutely fine. thespungo
One Hundred Fifty-Two
Put the records in a box. Put the box in your car.
GhostTrail
I'm in the process of packing and slowly moving things over as well. These boxes from the Container Store work great: http://www.containerstore.com/s/moving-shipping-storage/corrugated-boxes/our-best-corrugated-moving-boxes/12d?productId=10003227 Specifically the 16-3/8" x 12-5/8" x 12-5/8" boxes at the top. If you buy 10 or more you get a discount too, which is nice. thespungo
Shitty Rambo
Just leave them there and start over fresh.

ntslash
I moved 500 miles a couple summers ago. Like everyone else, I used uhaul boxes. I packed all my most favorite records in two boxes that I kept in my car. The other dozen boxes went on the moving truck. I wrote fragile and do not stack on them. The movers stacked them all on top of each other and put more heavy Shit on top of that. Guess how many were damaged? Yup, not even a bent corner. thespungo
thespungo
Appreciate all the replies, thanks! Lot's of good advice here. My big concern was the stacking, actually. I even thought about doing what you did, writing "fragile" and "don't stack", but maybe I won't worry about it. We have Uhaul boxes for the rest of the house, I'll stick with them for the records, too. Uhaul box. Line it with mailers. Limit by weight. Use common sense. Easy.I've done that 4 or 5 times. One of them was from 2500 miles. They're records, not nukes. You'll be fine. Appreciate the frankness. You're right, of course, just being weird 'cause it's my first move with records. And I assumed they were stacked normally like every box, right?
ntslash
The movers will just do their thing. Don't bother writing do not stack. As rough as they may seem, they know what they are doing.
