kirbypuckett
I'm all grown up! I actually wanted to be out in June, but it was a struggle to find a 3-bedroom place that accommodated my brother, my friend JB, and myself as we all work at different places all over Pittsburgh -- My brother made it difficult because he worked almost an hour of the city and wanted us to move north into the middle of nowhere, um no. So now it's down to just me and JB. Anyways, I started this thread, because I wanted to inquire about some things I should purchase for my apartment. I want to get things out of the way now. For example, I had no idea a rice cooker existed until a year ago, but after using my brother's all of the time I went out and bought one for myself. Are there any things you recommend owning or wish you had that aren't quite obvious like silverware and a coffee table?
divaface
scissors. a wok. one of those all in one tool sets from ikea. and it sounds stupid re-reading it but i was without those things the first night (minus the wok, that's just good to have) just because i was so worried about everything else. drunkenthird
people throw away good furniture because they dont know anyone that would want an old piece. like 90 percent of the stuff is fine, just needs a good sanding and a refinish. kirbypuckett
Scissors I have, but that's totally something I would have forgot. I have a toolkit too from work that I leave in my car.
jhulud
Shower curtain. A few places I've moved into didn't have one. That first shower sucked without it as water got everywhere.
riddle350
Sounds strange but go to the store and get every spice, sauce, cooking ingredient you can think of that is standard in every houshold. I'm constantly wishing I had something when I cook dinner just cause I never thought to get it when I was at the store.

flicker
true story, i just moved into a three bedroom townhome last week. its awesome. after you are done moving, set your bed up first. cause if you start unpacking other stuff, youll eventually get way tired and youll wish you could just pass out. kirbypuckett
I'm getting the periodic table of elements shower curtain from Thinkgeek. I already have an iron and I just brought an ironing board today. Spices are a great idea I didn't think of. Solid idea on the bed, that's the one thing I'm going to buy new -- I've been sleeping in a twin. Thanks for all the help so far.
mrc
tools, silverware, pots, pans, plates, spices, cups, trash cans, towels, lamps, light bulbs, mostly just random shit like can openers, pizza cutters and extension chords. oh and congrats on the new place. i love moving because you clean out all the shit you dont need/want but the physical act of moving is terrible. flicker
^ if you are going to buy a bigger bd, buy it AFTER you move in from someplace local that delivers. Same goes with if you want to get a new solid oak desk. Its a pain in the ass to haul that stuff up stairs...
valentine
i cant wait to move at the end of the month. mostly because i have a full size inflatable bed. we are on the third floor. so while i carry my bed down in a duffel bag, i get to laugh at my room mates struggling to get theirs out of their doorways! ha! thatll teach ya to drink my whiskey! ....fuckers. benchwarmer
rent a Penske truck if you're going to rent a truck. They have a AAA discount (if you, or your parents have it), and they're just better.

divaface
one of my favorite things about my apartment is that it's on the first floor. it made moving so much easier, especially considering the huge couch we have in the living room. chiefwahoo
A flashlight. I've found that I need this way more with a house than I did with an apartment but it'll come in handy very often. Light bulbs. You can never have too many Extension cords. The outlets are never close enough to where you want to put your shit. The Clapper. So many uses, this shouldn't need explained. I prefer using mine to turn on and off the Christmas lights. Never ceases to amuse people.

flicker
oh, and they say one of the best security investments is one of those outlet timers. They're real cheap and real effective at making it look like someone is home...
dante3000
Not sure if its been said but fire extinguisher. You never need one until it's too late. I finally put one in my place and it puts my mind at ease. also, always get a few extra power strips, you'll never know when you need them. mediocore
- Powerstrips - Doormat (especially when the rain starts) - Broom - Flashlight - Plunger - Fire safe - Fire extinguisher - Magic Erasers (for cleaning all the shit you'll inevitably get on the walls when you move in)
