You know how the second part of a triology...

good #2's:

Back to the future 2

Aliens

Jurassic Park : the lost world

Teenage mutant ninja turtles 2: the secret of the ooze

Dude, what? The second Jurassic park blows. Also, those aren't sequels that just set up the third, even Back to the Future (which left with a bit of a cliffhanger) had it's own contained story and resolution.

That's why The Empire Strikes Back is a kick-ass movie.

It works for the Emprie Strikes back but for a lot of movies it's way shitty.

Matrix

Saw (though Saw sucks all together)

Pirates of the Carabian

Even the second Lord of the Rings was the weakest.

I think the Two Towers was good for similar reasons TESB was good. It had its own plot entities to itself. It might not stand totally on its on but it moved the story forward and had inter-movie sub-plots. I think that's key. To have conflict arise in a sequel and have it resolved in the same sequel while moving the larger plot along.

A lot of these aren't really the second in a trilogy. They in no way planned a third terminator when they made the second.

Others are much more episodic, where each is a story. I think the Star Wars is the best one and maybe Back to the Future, in terms of part of a complete three part series and not sucking and even parts of Empire Strikes back was a bit whack.
