It's an investment portfolio that us Americans bank our entire futures/retirements on. Basically if you work for a company that offers you 401K options, you can opt to deposit a portion of your paycheck into an account that collects interest and isn't taxed. Some companies offer matching options including matching your investment. So if I put $100 of each paycheck into my 401K, the company could potentially also put $100 in.
