circlingvultures
I've only heard good things from people who own them and if I ever found one in good shape at a good price I wouldn't hesitate for one minute to grab it for a back up table. Dillhole
This happens every year, I won't believe it until it comes officially from Panasonic. The same thing happened about this time last year. All I know is I absolutely love my 1200mk5 and it will out last me so I'm not worried. I'm just glad I bought mine when they were 399 and not 999. At 399 it was a no brainer, nothing else compares at that price point, just a bunch of plastic tables. But once you get up 1k that opens the doors to many other tables. And here she is, in all her beauty.
mxv
I have two of them and I will never buy another turntable again, nor will I have to, they will last forever. I added the fluid dampening mod to one of them. For the money they can't be beat.

Not my table, but the same one above. And here is mine again from a few minutes ago playing some Megadeth.
oakland
I have a vintage SL 1700 and I love the shit out of it. I wouldn't use anything else. Plus I have a guy that repairs them for like nothing. I just wish I had a place to set it up right now.
burntwolf
I have the 1210. Dig it. I had that one in the shelf pic above for years too before I upgraded to the 1210. i think the only 'knock' on direct drive is some audiophile nuts claim you can 'hear' the drive during playback. This does seem pretty silly http://gizmodo.com/5675818/end-of-an-era-panasonic-kills-off-technics-turntables
burntwolf
this is my favorite comment: I heard Fender is discontinuing the Stratocaster because everyone is buying Guitar Hero controllers. maybe they leak this shit every year right before xmas to sell a few extra units... appendicitis
If buying a table for listening to music you can buy much better for the price. I have bought both of my 1200s for $450 out the door from DJ shops in Chicago. They are now being discontinued and will probably be a solid investment. The internal power supplies and tonearms of the 1200s suck for reproducing music. Also, they are direct drive vs. belt, not ideal. Check out Project, Rega, Music Hall, etc. for the best sonics for vinyl at a entry to mid-level price point. I just jumped on a Rega for listening, and use my 1200s for partying, fun and good looks. Guest eriathomas
@bigmanandy That one of the older model psx's with the audio out, that is supposed to be a really great CD player?
xxmartinxx
i think the only 'knock' on direct drive is some audiophile nuts claim you can 'hear' the drive during playback. It's not really about "hearing" the motor, it's about the motor being placed directly under the platter causing wow and flutter. It's not so "nutty". Denon made (makes) better quality direct drive tables, but I wouldn't recommend those either.
Dillhole
@bigmanandyThat one of the older model psx's with the audio out, that is supposed to be a really great CD player? Yea, its the first issue Playstation with the RCA's on the back instead of the big plug. It really is a killer CD player, it beats my old early 90's Sony unit I had prior. It's a little annoying not having a display, but it works like a champ.

Dillhole
^^^ Hell yea man, I love these decks in black! If I could go back in time I would have shopped around to find one, but all the places locally only had the 1200's and not the 1210's. Well now that my factory warranty is long gone, I guess I could always repaint it. Oh yea, back on topic, the 1200 line ain't going anywhere, there just discontinuing the mk6 line, which as far as I know was never available in the US anyways, only Japan. The mk2, mk5 and m5g aren't going anywhere!
shenanigans
So I'm deciding between a used technics 1200 or a new Audiotechnica LP120. Thoughts?
