robotfactory
This band has lost it. I loved "Chase This Light." I have the peacock tattooed giganticly on my forearm. But "Invented" was awful. "Coffee and Cigarettes" is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. The new song sucks too. This band is dead to me. I actually really liked "Invented", however I do agree with you, "Coffee and Cigarettes" is a terrible song. I like the new song, and I am really excited to hear the album. futures
Does it have that chick they've been using at all on it? She fucking ruins everything. I read a bunch of months back that there are no female vocals on this album.
futures
I think most people are, I see him fairly frequently, but hes just too cute or something that certain girls go all 'Beatles' on him hehe Haha. Actually, now that this topic has been brought up... I have seen, via the interwebz, that this one girl has actually made dolls. Like actual Jim Adkins dolls. I hope she doesn't live anywhere in the vicinity of Arizona. That shit creeped me out when I saw it.
sergeantscruffy
Who are you reviewing it for? I also got my advance this morning. I'm on my third listen now, and am definitely enjoying it (and I was rather critical on Chase This Light and the first half of Invented, too). I'm reviewing for a relatively new/small potatoes webmagzine. http://www.areyouamplified.com
searos
I honestly thought one of Invented's strength was the female vocals being added. She toured with them to make the songs feel really organic live. It was actually quite enjoyable.

I couldn't name one female rock vocalist that I enjoy. Unless you count Agoraphobic Nosebleed, but I had no clue that was a chick until months after I heard them for the first time. I guess Gwen Stefani is about the closest one, but I think that's just because she is sexy. As kick ass of a record as "Tragic Kingdom" is, how can I identify with a song like "I'm Just A Girl?" Not saying I hate all female singers; there are a select few that I can appreciate.

It gets a lot of flak but it makes for a remarkable night album and/or relax album. I definitely prefer more energy from the band and the album had to grow on me but looking back they really have never released a song I honestly dislike. I understand the deep love for futures but Chase This Light is personally one of my favorites by the band along with Bleed American. Both albums blended alt rock with pop rock quite nicely with lots of energy. Futures is still great and I enjoyed the moodiness but it takes a specific mood on my part to want to listen to it. That may end up being the same case with their new album but I have no doubt that it will be a really good album. To me Jimmy Eat World are one of the most consistent bands around despite each album sounding a bit different they have a core sound and it is just sonically appealing to me. The only band I'm really "in to" with a female vocalist is probably Farewell Continental.
drewberinger
I'm iffy on the production of the new album, and having it first heard on a shitty advance web stream isn't preferable, but that said it's a good album, has a few duds (Lean oofffff), but I really like the middle portion of it. michaelmanfredi
There are so many once great bands that have just stayed too long at the party... Jimmy Eat World, Death Cab For Cutie, Modest Mouse... These bands should have broken up albums ago, instead they just crap out new, worthless songs. shut the fuck up

searos
Don't be mad at me because you have lower standards. lol nobody lowers their standards. Invented was the perfect album to relax to and Chase This Light is their most hopeful sounding record and I could not pick 10 favorite songs without including Firefight. The album itself is a blast to listen to. Invented gets listens by me when I have had a long day of work and when those last 2 songs kick in my day is made. Movielike, Cut, and Littlething are also in that category. With Chase This Light I would kill to have been on the tour for that as there are a lot of upbeat tracks that really remind me of Bleed American to a degree. I like the vibe of the album. Each of their albums are similar yet embody different moods. You have to be in the right headspace to truly enjoy this band and I am ok with that. I honestly appreciate a band that keeps a core sound yet differentiates their albums through moods and tones. Its a shame you don't like their recent work but most fans would agree the band is extremely consistent and even ones who prefer older work have fan favorites off recent stuff. Reading this makes me realize that Jimmy Eat World means something different to you than it does to me. My introduction to Jimmy Eat World was finding a copy of the "Opener"/"77 Satellites" 7" in a record bin in 1995. I bought it because there was a sticker on it with some reference to Jawbreaker. I liked it. About a year later I found a "Static Prevails" CD in a used bin of the same record store. Since I liked their 7", I bought it. I liked it. "Clarity" came out, I bought it. It was a little different (less aggressive, had ambient parts). I liked it. "Bleed American" came out, I bought it. It was a lot different (way more poppy, less "experimental"). I liked it. "Futures" came out, I bought it. It wasn't that much different (still poppy, not at all experimental, felt like a regurgitation of "Bleed American" but less good). I didn't like it. "Chase The Light" came out, I didn't buy it. If your starting point was "Futures" or even "Bleed American", the subsequent albums aren't off-putting. If you started at "Static Prevails", it's not even close to the same band anymore.

To me its a bit generic but like you said I came back to it after their classics. I enjoy some songs off it but I vastly enjoy their more modern 00s to now sound (though I love clarity as well)Honestly I bet most people found the band after Clarity or Bleed American released so that probably explains the differences in opinion. My point is, people tend to view a band as the way they were introduced to them. If you got into the Beatles and the first thing you heard was "Please Please Me" and you liked it, you may not like "The White Album" because to you the Beatles are the band that "Love Me Do". derby625
Clarity was my first introduction to this band and I hated it. Luckily I was then given Static Prevails which completely changed my opinion. Each album since Bleed American has been decent and I enjoy them but none hold a candle to Static

futures
So I picked up the Damage 7". The first time I heard it, something sounded familiar to me. After the 3rd time, I linked it to Go Big Casino's "Ready." Jim's been known to sort of recreate his solo songs into JEW songs, so does anyone else think that parts of Ready was implemented into Damage? jvphotoandvideo
Got back from a busy RSD and hung this up on the wall. Sticks out like a sore thumb but it's alright. It was a good set today. New 7" is pretty good too. http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/jimmy-eat-world/2013/fingerprints-long-beach-ca-4bd83b5a.html PS: Couldn't pick up any spares for anyone. They were picky on the distribution this time around.
futures
That looks really cool!
