PO: Nirvana - In Utero (3LP 20th Anniversary)

Recommended Posts

I can't imagine they would do a release and not have the mix/version of the album that people are used to. As much as I would love for it to supplement the ORG reissue, I don't think they would do that.

Ugh.. I'm confused. This albums versions mixing/production always messes with my head. Litt, Albini... I'm hungry.

Honestly the Albini mixes serve as nothing more than novelties to me. I'll be glad to finally have good digital versions of them, but the final 1993 mix of the album is the one I'm used to and listen to most. For that, my copy of the ORG master works great. I would be really shocked to see a version of the album released with the Albini mixes in album running order outside the mistake versions that already exist.

My guess is that the vinyl package will contain the 2013 mix, which will be nothing more than a modern (read: brickwalled) remaster just like the anniversary vinyl package of Nevermind had, with the third LP containing the rarities and possibly the Albini mixes and demos.

To say that NIRVANA's third and ultimately final studio album, "In Utero", was 1993's most polarizing record would be the understatement of a decade. The unadorned sonic rawness of Steve Albini's recording laid bare every primal nuance of the most confrontational yet vulnerable material Kurt Cobain,Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl would ever record. And with its 1991 predecessor, "Nevermind", having sold some 30 million copies, singlehandedly returning honest rock 'n' roll to the top of the pop charts, "In Utero" was essentially the first record NIRVANA would make with any expectations from the public. So from the opening quasi-shamble melodics of "Serve The Servants" through the bittersweet closing strains of "All Apologies""In Utero" was the sound of the most incredible yet conflicted rock 'n' roll band of the era at the peak of its powers coming to terms with a generational spokes-band mantle they'd never seen coming-and ultimately surmounting these struggles to make the record they needed to make. As Rolling Stone's David Fricke said in his review at the time, "'In Utero' is a lot of things-brilliant, corrosive, enraged and thoughtful, most of them all at once. But more than anything, it's a triumph of the will."

Universal Music Enterprises will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the unwitting swansong of the single most influential artist of the 1990s with a multi-format release that spreads more than 70 remastered, remixed, rare, unreleased and live recordings over configurations ranging from a 3-CD/1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition to a standard digital/CD remaster of the original album. Material exclusive to the various versions of the "In Utero" 20th-anniversary reissue will include a veritable treasure trove of never-before-heard demos, B-sides, compilation tracks including:

Kurt Cobain's handwritten lyrics
* A new 2013 mix of the entire album
* The original never-before-heard Steve Albini mixes of "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies"
* The recently unearthed NIRVANA instrumental "Forgotten Tune"
* The original Dave Grohl solo demo of "Marigold" from December of 1990 — the earliest Grohl composition/recording ever released.
* A four-page letter from Albini to the band outlining his plans for how the album should be recorded.
* Liner notes by Bobcat Goldthwait
* A remixed and newly mastered CD of the entire December 13, 1993 "Live And Loud" show at Seattle's Pier 48 featuring the final touring lineup of CobainNovoselicGrohl, and Pat Smear
* The complete "Live And Loud" show along with several never-before-released bonus performances, that will also be released separately as a standalone DVD and digital download on September 24.

Do the audiophiles consider the original MoFi label way better than its current incarnation?

Actually the other way around... There's practically no original MFSL releases worth owning, original pressings were better sounding, for many reasons, although they were pressed on much higher quality virgin vinyl than the standard LP of that era.

The "new" MOFI has been churning out nothing but perfect reissues and I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of them.

If they're taking the time to remaster this at 45 and at abbey road then I would expect them to actually put some care into the SQ and maybe even cut it from the masters, but then again the majors have made greater mistakes. I'll wait for reviews, till then I'm very pleased with my cream colored ORG.

With that said, I am ALL FOR 45 rpm nirvana reissues... Incesticide was excellently done. Would love to see Nevermind receive the same treatment. If done well id gladly give up my colored ORGs

I don't know how anybody would expect they could master it "better" in the first place.

On any mastering job, there's always room for improvement in some respect. See: all the titles that have been remastered 20+ times

In Utero got a stellar remaster only a few years back by ORG, but if they can improve upon it with the 45 treatment (as opposed to degrading it like the deluxe Nevermind) then I am all for it. We need a remaster of In Utero much more than we need another round of Billy Joel half-speeds.

Liner notes by Bobcat Golthwait. Because you know nothing tops off a top-notch deluxe overpriced reissue package like liner notes from a washed up comedian.

Bobcat is awesome. He's written and directed a few things in the last few years, including World's Greatest Dad and God Bless America, both super bleak super good black comedies.

I listened to the podcast as well.  They have my money, and it sounds like Albini was talking up the copper master and all of the alternate takes that they did.  It sounded incredibly interesting.  Don't listen to the podcast if you don't want to end up wanting this.  I have the ORG issue as well as the Gold MoFi CD and I can't wait for this.  Cool about a new Bottomless Pit album too.

Oh man, gotta give that a listen. From what little of that interview has been posted here, I'm guessing they chose Abbey Road for their vms-82 lathe. I've heard both good and bad DMM, but I've never heard a 45 rpm dmm LP. I'm still gonna wait for some kind of confirmation that this was cut from tape (not sure if this was touched upon in the interview) but this should really end up sounding REALLY damn good.
