I got into vinyl records at the tender age of 9 in 1977 in the forlorn but laudable hope I could in later life bore the living shit out of people at parties about the subject once vinyl records were no longer fashionable, all went fine with this cunning plan all through the 1990's where I could hold an air of unfounded superiority at social gatherings ad infinitum, in fact as boring the shit out of people went I was the man right up until the early 2000's and then some cock womble decided to make vinyl records cool again with the facial topiary single speed bicycle riding types and there I was cast out into the fashionable herd once again. I've been in stunned silence on the subject ever since around 2006 and I've never really recovered, do you think there is some support group I could talk to about this?

a dirty (one dude actually did smell like piss) punk band i recorded put out a 7".. thought i should probably own it.  That lead to me believing that I should own ALL THE vinyl, i've been able to subdue that urge, lately.

How often you need to clean your stylus is directly linked to how clean your records are and how often you clean them as you're finding out.
If you're buying and playing a lot of 2nd hand records you might want to invest in some form of wet and preferably vacuum cleaner then you won't need to clean your stylus anywhere near as much.
You'll probably also find that the stylus on your old player was conical and the new one elliptical or at least a better angled conical so it's going deeper in the grooves and digging up all the crap down there, this also has an effect on stylus life so I'd bear that in mind as well.

I really hope that someone, somewhere, has cherry-picked their favorite contributions to these "research" threads (or survey websites) to share in a PowerPoint presentation.  Ideally among peers.

"Going off the sample pool taken from 'Vinyl Collective', you can see right here that the current consumer of vinyl over the age of 20 was introduced to the format through cat gifs.  There's also an indication that vinyl connoisseurs residing on the East coast share a correlating belief in worshipping the devil, and a select percentile found themselves entering the vinyl world solely to fashion bowls."

I like to meet with every potential Discogs seller I may or may not do business with.  We sit down, talk terms.  If I like what I see, we take it for a spin so I can get a feel for what we're talking about.  There's usually some thorough back-forth haggling – gotta' make sure I'm getting the most out of the loan I took out for such a hefty purchase.

But really, please stop with the car comparisons. You may as well equate record dings to dents or knicks on the produce you buy at the grocery store.

"I'm paying goddamn well over $3.00 a pound for those carrots.  You're telling me it's okay if one is a little dented?  What if you bought a car that was 'a little dented'?  What then?  Tell me what when, motherfucker."

Corner dings is a millennial entitlement thing.

Buy a record that is over 20 years old and there's a great chance it's in horrible shape. People bought records to listen to with no intention of reselling. People hung the liner notes on walls and wrote their name on the covers and labels. Many of these records were simply thrown out when a kid moved out, switched to cds/mp3s, literally wore out the record, or switched musical tastes.

Dings matter to people for the same reason they do to sports card, coin or comic book collectors. Ask a baseball card or currency collector how much difference a ding makes to the value of a card or note - probably like 75% on an in-demand one.

People who collect anything are weird. People who collect anything involving printer matter are even weirder. It's like they need some way to rank one copy of something over the next so they'll look for the slightest noticeable markings and use them as benchmarks.

I don't think it's that hard to understand. If you're only interested in the tunes, then be happy with your copy of an album dug from the bargain bin and be done with it. If you're an obsessive "collector" then you'll probably spend the rest of your adult life searching for the most pristine copy of "Dark Side of the Moon" imaginable, and when you finally find that mint sealed OG you'll wake up each morning paranoid that this will be the day it'll fall on the ground and get a corner ding.

I don't think one is right and one is wrong. Just two sides of the vinyl appreciation coin.
