allenh got a reaction from Sidney Crosley in Turntable question
When considering the purchase of this sort of product please take particular note of the wording in red in my signature, it's very pertinent and should be committed to memory to be recited out loud whenever the offer of that item or a similar one arises.
Also this device and all of it's hateful landfill dodging ilk are colour blind when it comes to records so over time they will cut worryingly deep gouges in any gramophone leaf you feel the need to attempt to play on them.
Helpful but bored English gentleman out.

Currently building my own cabinet. About a week into the build. Pictured is right after I glued the pine top to the unit itself. It's clamped down as it dries. When it does I'll be cutting the ends so they're even, obviously. I'll be staining the whole unit, adding a little stopper to each 'cube' so all the records will be flush and won't go back but so far, as well as putting an LED strip under the top overhang (probably). Then I have a few minor things to touch up like sanding a few parts to make it perfectly even, as well as adding wood stripping to cover the face. Then maybe do some molding under the overhang of the pine top. This is my first time building a piece of furniture, so it's been fun. I'll take photos when it's done and all set up and an album if you guys are curious about teh design and build process.

Apart from Banquet and Rough Trade head for Berwick Street which is just off of Oxford Street, It was the record shop mecca in London for years and is the picture on the front of the Oasis What's the story morning Glory album sleeve. There are still 2 shops on Berwick Street itself and at least 3 more in the surrounding roads.
Berwick Street is the most central with Rough trade out of the west end a little and Banquet quite a way out in Kingston, there also used to be a good 2nd hand record shop in Kingston but I'm not sure if he's still there.
Also head to Camden Lock if you want to see London's alternative side at its best, there are a couple of stalls inside the market and at least one shop on the way up to the market from the tube station. Camden is also great for food, beer and music pubs.
Apart from that there's Ronnie Scotts and the 100 Club which are must see's even if nothings on and more venues, good pubs and restaurants than you can shake a stick at in London.
And if you are in London on the 1st or 3rd Friday of the month there is a record fair in Spittlefields Market which is always worth a look, it's also on some Saturdays but I'm not sure which and that are in general is also good for food, beer and music and is also pretty close to Rough Trade
Enjoy but remember you've got to get all those records and all the other shit you buy home.

allenh got a reaction from A-Bon in Technics SP-10MKII HELP
By 12" I mean an arm that is 12" long, most turntables use arms that are 9" long as in your 1210.
And to be honest the 1210 is average generally but compared to the SP10 it's a different world so if the 1210 is your level I have a feeling you're probably going to need to spend some serious money on high end amplifiers, tonearm/cartridge and speakers to get the best out of your SP10.
I don't know what the rest of your system is so i could be wrong on this but as @AGB suggested you might want to think about selling it on, you will get serious money for it that you could use to upgrade all of your system to a higher level. It's much better to have a system that is all of similar quality rather than having one bit that is stunning as the rest will drag that stunning thing down not it drag the rest up.

Yeah Allen! Maybe all these years, offset has been the biggest issue with tables. A nice straight arm with no offset is clearing the correct way to track records.

what are you on about allen, it clearly states right there on the page that "you get perfect sound"
you're not saying they would just... lie?

I only answer questionnaires if they are shared in SurveyMonkeys filled with pop up ads.

Also
1. What do you think has caused/contributed to the vinyl resurgence and why?
The vinyl resurgence can be traced back to the 2012 Record Store Day release of the Disturbed box set.
2. What do vinyl records mean to you?
Webster's Dictionary defines "vinyl records" as "an exhaustingly expensive thing to collect that girls aren't actually all that interested in, as it turns out".
3. Do you prefer the visual or aural aspects of vinyl records?
Tactile, actually. The feeling of rubbing the grooves against my balls is the best
4. What are the benefits of vinyl records over other formats of music?
It's the best way to support my favorite independent labels, like Enjoy the Toons and Newbury Comics.

Yes. A third thread about this was very much needed

allenh got a reaction from shaizada in What's your latest purchase?
That sums me up quite well as well, I don't know about covered but there are not many flat surfaces in my house that don't have a turntable on, the Dining table and toilets are about it and the Dining table has been brought into service as a temporary work area on occasion when my wife has been out.
And that Garrard still needs a SME on it, to a British man for that not to be so is an affront to Queen and Country.
We Brits don't get jingoistic about much but a Garrard without a SME well it's just not cricket.

Thanks for that Thomas
I can get it shipped to my parents in NC if I need to, I just have to wait a little while to get it and there's always a little stack of records waiting there for me when I go over but @lastvaultboy might take you up on that.

allenh got a reaction from NewOldStock in Amp(?) buzz - nothing works to rid me of it!
Well you shouldn't need a ground wire between the 551 and the 351 but I would try it anyway.
It does sound like the 551 is your problem or its power supply but the only way you can prove that is to have another set to substitute it with

allenh got a reaction from NewOldStock in Amp(?) buzz - nothing works to rid me of it!
I know you say you've done all the plug changing around etc. And it does sound like it the 551 somewhere but:
Does it do it with other sources?
Does it do it if you plug the 551 into another input?
Have you got a ground wire between the 551 and the 351?

allenh got a reaction from tokimedo in How can I improve my setup?
I've also found that in general all these types of AVR's lie like a Japanese cars speedometer when it comes to power output so if your speakers are difficult to drive then that could be a problem. It's not so much the quoted output, they can probably achieve it for at least 3 or even maybe 4 nano seconds with a run up but then they need a little rest to recover so they can't produce decent current levels for any meaningful length of time,
My AV system has a pair of very big and difficult to drive Mordaunt Shorts and with every Denon and Onkyo I tried even the very big ones they just didn't work, My original Rotel and my current Yamaha drive them perfectly well. Sadly the Yamaha's phono stage isn't great and the Rotel didn't have one so I've had to add a separate one.
-
allenh got a reaction from tokimedo in How can I improve my setup?
Could be many things, my instinct is also for the phono stage as they are generally poor in AVR's but have you tried a digital source like a CD player into it and if so is it as bad?
I also agree with looking at speaker placement as ajxd is correct those things need room but my instinct is to look at the front end first.

allenh got a reaction from RowBearToe in When to replace the stylus.
Unless you never clean anything and or run at stupidly high tracking force on a badly set up crap turntable I wouldn't worry about it yet. I have carts here dating back to the 70's that work perfectly so unless it's a abused your stylus should last a very long time.
Generally manufacturers quote figures between about 500 and 1000 or so hours playing time which varies from cart to cart so look it up on the manufacturers site. This depends very much on how clean you keep your records and stylus and how well set up it is. For that AT I would reckon on the higher side so somewhere around 1000 hours plus in normal use but basically when it starts to sound bad if it doesn't improve after a clean you need to replace it, generally you'll hear the top end start to fail first. And if it's this early look very hard at your arm, turntable and how you look after your records and kit.
