Jlegg got a reaction from Flaps100 in Pre-Amp ?
I agree with the above poster. Give yourself some time with the new deck and get a feel for the sound. It is my opinion, though, that you won’t get much out of a better pre-amp right away. Everyone has their own opinions, but I think the cartridge is one of the most important links in the chain. Your new one will most certainly be a huge upgrade from whatever was on your old TT, but it’s still no gem, and certainly not even close to being on par with your speakers.
It'll sound slightly different, maybe, but it won’t allow you to hear detail that your stylus is not picking up, if that makes sense. By all means get one because it will be useful to have in the future as you upgrade your cart, but probably isn’t necessary right away.

Heart of the Congos is my favorite dub album. I wish I had a better press of it. I guess its likely just the recording quality, but...
Also, Easy Dub All Stars - Dub Side of the Moon is a fun album.

Jlegg got a reaction from bswzzl in Help with setting up older Polk Audio speakers
the red and black knob on the back of your speaker should twist out if you twist them counter clockwise. If they do, wrap speaker wire around the post and twist the knob back down. If they do not twist out, you will need some banana plugs as Tardcore has mentioned.

Jlegg reacted to monk0nuggets in What's your latest purchase?
After selling my old Marantz 2252B (which I was using mainly as a phono preamp at this point) and filing my taxes, I decided to upgrade a few components. Went ahead and bought a Gram Slee Special Edition 2 phono preamp, new Audioquest Golden Gate Interconnects, and an Audio-Technica AT150Sa cartridge (formally Ortofon 2M Red).
Current complete line:
Audio-Technica AT150Sa -> Thorens TD 295 mark 3 -> Gram Slee Special Edition 2 -> Audioquest Golden Gate Interconnects -> Marantz SR5005 -> 2 Axiom M60 v2

Jlegg reacted to vinyl addict in Advice wanted on Bluetooth set up for a 1960s Zenith X926 stereo console
As far as I know, there are no connections on that amp/receiver to connect a BT module to.
I just recently picked up an RCA unit hat I am extensively restoring too.
I've got it all cleaned up and the 33/78 player (on the left) is up and running great. Also got the amp and tuner working.
Went through and tested all the tubes and it checks out great. Need to replace all the caps next, then tackle the 45 player.

Jlegg got a reaction from vinyl addict in Need some advice
It's like when rednecks put on their fanciest Affliction shirts and bedazzled jeans to go out to eat at "The Outback." If you're used to McDonald's (Crosley) then Outback (U-Turn) would be your high end.
We're arguing semantics, but yeah, I agree with you. VPI is something I would consider high end, a $300 table I would not, but I wouldn't even consider a $300 as mid tier, and a lot of people do.

Jlegg got a reaction from Tommy in Need some advice
That is likely a decent turntable. Rek O Kut's were fine tables, but unless you have the skills yourself, you will likely be wasting your money. The belt alone is $40 +shipping, and would be one of the easier things to fix on it. Then, if you want to replace it with a halfway decent cart, you're looking at another $100 easy.
I'd take the above poster's advice and go with something inexpensive and new like a U-Turn.

Jlegg got a reaction from andyk in WTB/TF Relient K - Two Lefts
I thought to myself, why in the hell would anyone want a Relient K album, but then I realized they were once nominated for a Grammy for "Best Rock Gospel" and I was still left wondering why anyone would want any of their LP's.

Jlegg got a reaction from Dominic_ in Is ion really that bad?
My recommendation is to just save what you can and get a decent entry level turntable. At least, that is if you really want to collect records.
Will that ION tear up your records? Sure after a while. You aren't going to put a record on it and it come off warped, but the cheap stylus will eventually wear down the grooves. Maybe just hold off on buying vinyl until you can get a decent turntable. I personally think the Music Hall MMF 2.2 is a good route to go, but there are some cheaper decent turntables out there.
When you think about how much you spend on non necessities, a few hundred bux for something you really enjoy isn't all that bad.
