I'm new to the forum and recently exposed to the notion of variant collectors. It has sort of raised some questions for me, but mostly...what is the appeal to variant collecting? I am not trying to instigate a ruckus, but rather a discussion. In my eyes, there are just too many artists and good albums out there that i couldn't bring myself to spend my limited funds on the same album in 7 different colors. I understand the beauty of colored vinyl and often pay a premium for limited releases, but I don't understand the "collect them all" mentality. It seems like some bands are privy to these collectors and specifically sell numerous low numbered runs. 250 of one color, 150 of another. In the end it probably clogs up the already congested pressing plants and releases get delayed. Variant collectors, I understand that the album is a piece of art, but is that solely the draw for multiple copies?

Mostly because I am nearly 7 feet tall, so the shelf would be at ~5ft, or dead center in the middle of the wall. It would have looked somewhat silly. Yeah, I wanted the digital inputs on the receiver so I could bypass the DAC in the Denon and use the higher quality DAC in the Yamaha receiver. Plus, I don't think my TV has analog outs. I use an optic cable to run to the amp. Really though, I needed a receiver with a phono preamp built in when I went to buy the Yamaha. The price was right, the power per channel was great (120wpc), I could by-amp, and also attach all sorts of digital inputs. The only thing that was comparable at the time was a Harmon Kardon amp, but it was like 3-4x the price. -

Got a good deal on it a while back. $200. Plus it has a built in phono preamp and 120 Watts per channel. Very few amps that contain phono stages also have digital inputs (coax or otherwise) for that price. I needed the digital for the DVD audio from the Denon and hooking up the TV. -

Not the prettiest setup, but here is mine. Rega RP40 with TTPSU & Denon 1930CI SACD/DVD-A Player into a Yamaha RX-V1600 Receiver and out bi-amped JBL L830 bookshelf speakers. I run computer audio using Foobar with ASIO into a Ibasso D6 with dual WM8740s 24bit-96kHz DACs. LPs are stored in a Walmart brand "Expedit." The turntable is mounted on a wallshelf that is screwed into a stud and hovers slightly above some LP crates (which hold about 300 CDs) -
Got my album today from Amazon. Indeed, it is rainbow splatter. It is a beautiful record and only $7.99. I really enjoy the tracks on the vinyl, minus the Matthew Dear. Side B is really solid, Shigeto's track to close out the album is really good. Definitely worth picking up, if you haven't. It is just some chilled out electronic music. Now to listen to the 22 downloaded tracks they included with the LP.

This happened to me. I preordered the MM reissues from SRC. Then I canceled my order after I found cheaper deals elsewhere. After I canceled I realized they only give store credit (first time ordering from SRC). I ended up buying 3 other LPs with the credit. Almost took SRC 2 months to ship out those 3 titles. Each title I ordered was somehow on backorder for like 2 or 3 weeks. When they got 1 title in, another went on backorder. Then they claimed they shipped them on Sept 27th (which was a lie), and they finally arrived Oct. 20th. Had to file a Paypal claim. Avoid SRC at all costs.

Anybody know what variant of Kingfisher Amazon sells? No mention on their page. -
Looking for good bookshelf speakers.
zdkaiser replied to HybridxReality's topic in Turntables & Other Audio Equipment
I enjoy my JBL L830 bookshelf speakers. They are robust, 27lbs each, and quite bassy. I don't use a sub with them. They are built like tanks, have excellent stereo separation, can be bi-wired, and the cherry finish is quite nice. I got a used set on Audiogon a few years ago for $270. I think they retail closer to $500 or 600. They would be prefect for hip hop and you can crank it to 15 without blow out worries. Check out the reviews on Amazon. They are almost all positive. I run a Rega RP40 into a 120wpc Yamaha amp into the JBLs and it sounds fantastic. -
I received all black vinyl from Fat Possum for both Long Drive and LCW. I don't think they sell the haze versions.

Good Stylus Cleaner for <$25
zdkaiser replied to zdkaiser's topic in Turntables & Other Audio Equipment
Hey everyone, I ordered 4 strips of moongel, likely enough to last long time. If anyone is interested in trying this stuff out, send me a PM. I'd be happy to mail you a strip if you cover postage costs. Probably cost you a buck or two. -
They sound good. no worries in that department

Yeah, my LCW and Long Drive from Fat Possum had a lot of paper dust on them. I did a wet wash, and they sound pretty good. The pressing is excellent: thick black vinyl that is flat as a pancake. Also the 7 inches from Fat Possum are black. No colored vinyl, like the GP pre-orders. Boo. And I might add, the 7 inches are super lightweight and flimsy. I haven't listened yet though.

Aphex Twin - SYRO (too soon?)
zdkaiser replied to mameeshkamowskwoz's topic in Vinyl Collective Message Board
Damn that is cheap for three slabs of music -
I emailed Fat Possum and they said the colored 7 inches are exclusive to GP. I get mine from FP on Wed so I will let you all know. Probably just black.
