Pressing plants widely vary in quality too. There are many factors but picture discs always sound at least slightly worse because of the way they're made. Avoid them if possible, but some can potentially sound alright to good.

I think it's a hit or miss. I own The Trilogy by Melvins and all 3 picture discs sound fantastic. I also have lust in space by gwar and its really not that great, at least from what I remember. 

Bullmoose also has Love Tara on their Vinyl--Latest Updates page. I'm thinking all three might be seeing another release.

Also, and maybe this is more to the general audience in case anyone is in a similar boat, keep in mind that this pressing has had some issues (locked grooves and skips). So, if you buy from VMP, it'll be easier to get a replacement sent to you for free than if you buy from some moody teenager in Oklahoma who just wants your $80 and would rather you eat his shorts than help you get a replacement.

What is this "math" you speak of?

They have described it as a beta program. So it's relatively simple in format right now. I'm sure there will be a more nuanced pricing model down the road if genre subs stick, with the public being able to access them without being a member, or having discounted monthly costs is you sub for an extended period of time. 
 
That being said, I signed up but not sure if I will stick with it. I feel a bit of FOMO right now, but my 'classics' collection is missing a ton of essentials and I'm probably better off spending $32 CAD a month on ensuring I have those in my collection over what will inevitably be a hit or miss album to my ears.
 
That being said, give me an electronica sub genre and I'll be signing up for life...

Totally agree. Listened to it yesterday for the first time, and I was astounded at how great it sounds. Wish all new vinyl sounded this clean. And then the album, of course, is fucking genius.
