I don't understand why they do this Bonus-CD-with-only-1-song thing...  The "Shelter" bonus track "Into The Waves" is one of my favorite songs, but they didn't include it in the regular album.  I just don't get why they do this, it seems kind of dumb to me.  Why not just put the extra song on the regular CD, even if you only release it in Japan, for instance?

Yeah its just weird, because some things like this, which are in my Wantlist, I don't get notifications for.  But other things, I'll get the message.... and the item will then be already gone when I click on the link.

In other news, I have a very funny story for you all.  Especially Matt.  This is totally true.  So, I went to see Phish twice at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, a huge awesome amphitheater in Saratoga that is inside a massive awesome park.  It's so cool.  Anyway, on Saturday I wore my Caspian shirt.  I always wear oddball shirts to events to A) be non-conformist, and 2) to see who else is into this stuff.  Like, I wore a Morbid Angel shirt when I went and saw Dead & Company a couple weeks ago.  Anyway, so my friends and I are walking around the lot where people are selling their wares and food-stuffs, and some dude comes up to me and is like "DUDE, CASPIAN!"  We get talking, and he's like "I've seen Caspian 35 times, it's the only band I've seen more than Phish."  Turns out, this dude is friends with Erin, who got married this weekend.  They grew up together or something.

We start talking, and I tell him that I like Caspian because to me, they do in songwriting form what Phish does with their jams.  And it turns out that Cal annddddd fuck, I can't remember which other member he mentioned, are big Phish fans.  And that some of the music that Cal wrote, like "Some Are White Light" are meant to represent what they feel during big peak climaxes of Phish jams.  They're supposed to have the same grand, sweeping movement and development and ecstatic release feeling.  I know this dude wasn't fucking around, because he said "Cal, you know... the dude who doesn't tour with them anymore."

So.....  Caspian.... jamband....  it's not a stretch.  Kinda hilarious.

So i just heard back from the band.  The tracks that were listed on their setlist as "New Terrain" and "Kan Du Sluta" are now "Off The Beaten Path" and "Ikaros".

That means that the first song in that clip above is the end of "Ikaros".

The 2 new PG.Lost songs are really fucking good, and very different in some ways.

"New Terrain" is basically what it sounds like, the song starts much in the same way as Terrain with the bass kicking the song off with a slightly overdriven riff.  That's about as much as I remember from that tune.  Kan Du Sluta takes a kind of Caspian approach, and begins with some electronic drum pad loops and beats, and then goes to classic PG.Lost territory.  The song is somewhat similar to Jura, in that it's very upbeat and very powerful; this song builds to a massive intense climax.  It has some more of the angelic wordless vocals that Vultures does also.

    PG.Lost setlist both nights:

Jura, Vultures, New Terrain, Still Alright (!!!!!), Kan Du Sluta, Terrain.

I can't believe they played Still Alright.  I had asked them about that tune on Facebook, so I wonder if that had something to do with it.  It's very different to experience that song live versus on record, because it's very slow, and takes a long time to build, but it's very powerful.  It stood in stark contrast to the rest of their set, which were all high-octane heaven-storming rockers.  But it shows you how powerful that type of post-rock really can be.  By the time the song ends, everything is shaking and you're swept up in the tornado, so-to-speak.

The end of Terrain is especially intense live, that served as a good closer.  I super regret not taking any videos, but my phone was being super wonky all weekend.  Traveling so much and not having enough time to charge it full every day left me somewhat limited in usage.  I have a bunch of pictures though I want to get uploaded so you guys can see.  The other brilliant thing about the festival is how many people from all over the world came, and how we all were connecting simply over music.  I stayed at Urban House (which I can't recommend enough) and in my dorm were 3 19-year old kids who traveled from Serbia to see the shows.  I also was hosted by a dude from Sweden who graciously offered to travel with me and let me crash at his house, as well as pick me up from the fucking airport.  Strangers coming together from all over the world, just for music.  It was so beautiful, so much positive energy.  I had posted on Facebook about a group meet up, and we found 2 other people traveling to the festival by themselves, one from Germany and one from UK.  So we formed our own little crew for the weekend, never having met before.  And we just got to geek out on music the whole weekend.

The other cool thing is how much Isis was played as the house music between bands, heh.  The last track before Cult of Luna came on Saturday was "Hall of the Dead."  and as soon as the track ended, the curtains came back and Cult of Luna played all over SATH.  They also showed the "DIY in the 21st Century" documentary about Isis/Hydra Head, Neurot and Constellation records, which was sick.  It was so joyous to be able to just sink in the whole weekend and talk with other people about Isis, If These Trees Could Talk, Jakob, etc etc.

The annoying thing, though, is that now I have to fucking buy Pelican records.  God damnit.  I didn't need another band to love!   That said, I'll give a run-down of everything probably later today and give you all a play-by-play because there was so much fucking music, and it was all amazing.

You seem to have strong feelings about this.  Would you care to contribute towards this endeavor's fulfillment?  With a monetary contribution of $15, you can pick one record for me to listen to.  For a $35 contribution, you can pick 5 records, and I will say your name out-loud before each one.  But if you wish to support me with a $75 contribution today, you will get naming rights to my new turntable, as well as agency over 2 full month's-worth of my listening choices!  Don't want me to listen to any of the new records I've bought, because I waited so long to get a new turntable?  Frustrated because I wasted money frivolously?  Want to deprive me of listening to PG.Lost or Jakob until September?  INDULGE YOUR SADISM TODAY.

    HEY GUYS!

So, this dude I talk to all the time from Switzerland has a label, and it's called Elusive Sound.  They are just about to drop their first release, which is 2 variants of Glasir's "Unborn" EP.  They're going all out in the variants and packaging, and it looks to be an impressive release.  180g, 45RPM, 350g covers, screen printed extras.... the works.  The material is really great, too, if you haven't checked Glasir out before.

    Pre-orders go up Friday.  http://elusive-sound.com/2016/06/21/glasir-unborn-ep-vinyl-pre-order/

The guys who run the label are massive post-rock fans, I talk to them just about every day on Facebook.  Sold one of the dudes my black/clear ITTCT "Red Forest" a while back.  They've got more coming from Au Revoir, Show Me A Dinosaur, and more.  I keep bugging them to join the discussions over here, because they're massive music fans just like us.

Anyway, I put my pre-order in for both Glasir variants today...  check the stuff out here, I think you guys will like it a lot.

I can see how you would feel this way.  As far as instrumentation goes, this album is nothing like any of their previous works.  There are no big riffs, no big guitar hooks, or anything really like that at all.  It's a different approach, more song-based and focusing solely on Kevin's vocals.  And I'm not a vocals guy....  even though I do love his voice.  I listen to bands chiefly for the instrumentation, and the vocals basically frame it or add some kind of dynamic context for me.

The one thing I really DO like though, is the inclusion of the electronic elements like in Habit.  If they can find a way to couple that with the gorgeous riffing that we know they are capable of, these guys will be next-level.  I like this album, but it doesn't move their sound forward.  We'll see how that changes over time, and how the material translates live.

No, Matt...  you're right.  I felt a little silly today about all this.  It's something that I know happens to myself when I get too wrapped up over something.  I don't know WHY it happens, but it does.  I try my best to keep it in check, but sometimes...  well, I don't.  I'm human too.  I don't know why I've been so wound up lately.  Could be stress bubbling over from undergoing a big career/life change right now, displaced anxiety manifesting as uncool behavior.  Who knows.  And it's annoying because it's not like I ENJOY feeling this way.  I seriously was super frustrated over the whole thing.  That was very real.  I think I get tunnel vision and don't know how to look beyond it.  My sincerest apologies, because you are absolutely right.

It doesn't matter anymore anyway, because someone else had jumped on my post on their wall, and the band responded and is going to be putting the CD's up for sale on their website.  So all is resolved

On that note, I'm REALLY stoked on this A Hope For Home band.  It's funny because if Sasan had given me those CDs, I might have never discovered this band.  Brilliant material.  Been listening to a lot of Envy lately, too.  I can't believe I didn't check them out sooner.

A Dead Sinking Story is still by far my favorite.  Recitation is quickly gaining speed, though...

Why it sometimes pays off to contact bands you like on Facebook....

So, I got physical copies of "Fragments of Uniforms" by Pet Slimmers of the Year finally.  They're an odd band for me because at first, I didn't freak out over them.  I think I was off-put by the similarity to late-era Isis and having a different singer other than Aaron Turner over top the music.  But they slowly had been growing on me over time, and finally pulled the trigger on the CD and LP.  So, I also began digging through their other releases...  it seems they've done a bunch of singles over the last couple years which are awesome.  And then I found THIS:

Talk about a freakout!!!!!!  If you guys like late-era Isis AT ALL, you owe it to yourself to listen to this song.  It is absolutely fucking incredible, I cannot stress that enough.  This is from their 2nd EP, "...And The Sky Fell," released originally in 2010 (and on CD in early 2011).  Only 3 people on Discogs say they have it, and the one person to respond to me only has the digital release, so that doesn't really count.

I found them on Facebook, and sent them a message asking if they had any copies left anywhere.  They asked me for my address, and that was that.  We chatted more about guitars and music and writing and their new EP they're recording soon.  Then, yesterday, the CD showed up!!!  They sent me the last copy they could find, for free.  I couldn't fucking believe it.

Lesson:  It never hurts to ask.  You never know what will happen.  Hopefully, the same I get the same results from Jakob for "Solace".  Nothing but radio silence from those guys, so we'll see.  In the server switch-over, my messages never made it to Sasan regarding the albums he bought at their show for me, so he sold them to Adamha21 instead.  :::flips table:::

They were heavy and driving, one of them is called "New Terrain" because it has a similar grungey distorted bass riff to open the song.  The other one called Kan Du Sluta (Can you Stop) starts off with some Caspian-esque electronic drums before doing other stuff...  I don't remember them too well at this point, honestly.  They were both great, though, and built up to big crescendos.  Both of them were more on the rocking heavier side of their material, that's for sure.

Yeah they were on tour, with PG.Lost I would imagine.  not sure, Paul didn't say specifically who he was on tour with.

The shirts are cool, 100% cotton.  I bought the deer one at the show.  The CD's came out great, too.  It's so weird listening to this stuff on record now though because Vultures and Terrain and Jura are SO many magnitudes more amazing live than the studio versions.  The studio versions almost sound sterile and lifeless to me in a way.  Their live sound is just untoppable.  Utterly perfect, so much energy, and the dynamics of the songs really come through so much more on stage.  Oddly enough, "Still Alright" keeps its feeling on record the way it does live.  It's almost too slow live, in a way, when you've been hit with tracks like Jura and Vultures right before it.  But it builds very beautifully.

What's really weird though is that you don't get the full epic uplifting experience from the chorus in Vultures the way you do live.  It's just so much heavier and more intense...  first, when Kristian is hitting that "dun....  dun dun dun" bass rhythm, and then when he's singing into his mic for the chorus and the guitars are rumbling and the bass is swallowing you whole...  and then they modulate to a major key resolution, ugh.  I can't wait to see those guys again.  You guys really have no idea how fucking incredible that song is live.

In Gothenburg, it could have been the jet-lag and being exhausted from traveling, but when "Vultures" first chorus hit....  my body just went crazy, and got this super tight ecstasy feeling, all the muscles contracting from the power and glory, and I fucking started crying from sheer joy.  That song ended, and I shit you not, I had rivers of tears running down my face.  It was absolutely bonkers.
