Grief, Eyehategod, Noothgrush and early Corrupted are sludge essentials. Rwake, Coffinworm, Warhorse and Enewetak are/ were also great. Probably forgetting some others. And while Thou are not as crusty, they're definitely drawing from the same musical lineage. (I once heard them describe their approach to songwriting as "What Would Eyehategod Do".)

Speaking of Thou, they brought a few new records on their current tour as well as a little discography zine that was otherwise only available to Bryan's Patreon subscribers. Highly recommended.

Speaking of Deadguy - in case anyone is interested, I have a ticket for tomorrow's show in Jersey, but unfortunately can't go. Giving it away for free, hmu if you want it.

Or you could wait a few more weeks and get it from a domestic US retailer for less. My recent order from imusic for a supposedly in stock copy Glow On turned out to be backordered. Presumably eventually they really will have it in stock, but then you're still looking at 2-6 weeks for shipping.

I know people are going to buy this regardless, but come on, $160 for what amounts to one single record's worth of music is a pretty shitty deal unless you just like spending money. It's a band-sanctioned flip. Buy the Ritual De Lo Habitual repress instead, it's a better album and costs only $32.

You're moving to Paris in the spring! I'm so jealous!

Ok, assuming that you do NOT want to bring the records on the plane (because you probably have a lot of other personal belongings to bring) and that your friend's container is your best option, here is exactly what I would do:

Get a 14x14x14" box (available on Amazon). They come in different degrees of sturdiness, get the thickest cardboard option available. You're going to use clothes (preferably T-shirts or towels, something the folds flat) and bubble wrap to pack. Wrap your records in bubble wrap as tightly as possible in packs of ten. On the bottom of the box, put down a firm 1" layer of clothes (about three T-shirts worth). Then arrange the records in the middle of the box. You should have at least half an inch to spare on each side, probably more on two sides, since, as everyone has been helpful to point out, you only have 40 records (which is a great start to a collection). Gently but firmly stuff the sides and top of the box around the records with clothes, as much as you can fit, then seal it. Why not use more bubble wrap to stuff the box? Because fabric can be packed more tightly, plus it frees up suitcase space. The key to this is sufficient padding + tight packaging, so nothing can move around inside the box no matter how roughly it's handled or damaged if it falls on its corner. That should do it. Good luck!

The Red Chord is confirmed for this June's Metal & Beer Fest. Perhaps we'll finally see a release of their discography on vinyl on the occasion!

Isle of Wisdom preorders are live from the band's webshop (black only) and Napalm Records (purple and marble w slipmat).

Really looking forward to this! Conundrum was one of my surprise discoveries of 2020 and the first single from the new album sounds like a continuation of the sound.

Hmm, I can't find the old Blue Collar site anymore. There's a printer called Blue Collar based in Lawrence, KS, perhaps that's what became of BCI? (Wasn't it run by Sean Ingram? At least that's what I always assumed.)

Oxbow has a merchtable store, but no vinyl left.

Antenna is an interesting turning point in Cave In's discography. At the time it came out, it turned off a lot of old fans because the record was trying very hard to appeal to a wider audience. Because that's what you're supposed to do when you are on a major label. It was supposed to be Cave In's Glow On--they did a late show appearance, they played festivals, they released singles. But then when record sales didn't meet the label's expectations, they got dropped like a hot potato. (At that time, selling 100K units was considered a failure I guess. I remember that number being bandied about.) And it seemed like the band went through a phase of real disillusionment and took a while to recover artistically. Long story short, it was a disappointment.

But here's the thing--Antenna really *is* a great record. Sure, there's a lot of streamlined verse-chorus-verse songwriting by old Cave In standards, but it also has a lot of great hooks. Joy Opposites and Youth Overrided alone make it worthwhile digging into this thing. I don't think that all of Cave In's discography is equally worth celebrating. Naturally there've been some relative duds. There are some songs on Antenna that I feel pretty lukewarm about. But I've definitely come around big time to Antenna as a whole and it's cool to see that this is very much a shared sentiment these days.

They already mentioned on IG that they're doing another pressing, and also that 300 copies from this pressing are going to various distros. I am surprised how quickly the other 700 went though.
